like, boom, right back in. >> it's freezing. >> there's no time to play outside at all. >> it's cold for everybody. >> it really is. anyway, welcome in this sunday morning. thanks for being with us. i'm adam tuss. >> good morning to you. i'm meagan fitzgerald. we want to get right to meteorologist somara theodore. somara, tell us it's going to warm up! give us some good news. >> it is going to warm up, but first we've got to get through this chill. now, the windchill advisory that was issued this morning expired at 6:00 a.m., but that doesn't mean it's not cold out there. take a look at your headlines right now. still battling some dangerously cold temps this morning. and we've got to get to your forecast for monday into early tuesday morning where we are going to be tracking some wintry precip, possibly some freezing rain that could impact your commute. and then as we head into the ten-day, we're going to talk about that warmer end to the week. right now, though, stepping outside feeling like 4 degrees in the district, feeling like minus 2 in gaithersburg right now. i'll let you know how warm we're going to get today and how warm we're going to get by friday as

thank you, somara. well, we are not even in the peak of the winter season yet. we just have gotten started, but we are already seeing frozen pipes, water main breaks, school delays and closings. >> kind of a mess out there for some folks. and howard university won't be opening its doors for another nine days. derrick ward is live from howard university this morning. he is breaking down why the university is postponing classes. good morning, derrick. >> reporter: good morning. it's all about busted pipes, power outages and no heat. this school system, the school here runs off the system of steam heat and they've got issues with a boiler. there's actually a new boiler that's been brought in, and they're working on installing that now. but here's what you need to know. the undergraduate schools like business, education, engineering, architecture, nursing and allied health, those classes, the start of classes at those schools will be postponed until january 16th. tuesday, january 16th. now, the university will be opened

and the start of classes at certain professional schools like divinity, law, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, things like that, they will actually have classes that will start. and the residence halls will be open as well. however, they are asking students who will be at some of those schools with the delayed start that they delay coming here to college and moving in to make it a little bit easier. it will certainly be more comfortable once you have heat at those buildings. now, we do understand that the hospital is open and running as usual. they're diverting their team to the residence halls and the hospitals while they work on these other issues that they have to deal with. but again, certainly not a situation conducive to learning, comfort, or even safety. that is why they are delaying the start of classes, again, until january 16th for some of those schools. we are live here at howard university, derrick ward news4. back to you. >> all right, derrick, thank you. we have some developing news for you in the

firefighters are still on the scene of this major fire on park place in northwest. extra units were called in to put out this blaze. park place between quebec place and park road northwest are still closed. one person was taken to the hospital. another is being evaluated on scene. remembers also told the family inside will have to find a new place to live. another fire to tell you about, this one a two-alarm fire overnight. it was on the scene of 12th and n street in northwest. we're told the call came in around 12:30 this morning. the blaze affected both business and residential units. five people, including three children, are now looking for a new place to live. the good news here, no one was injured. meanwhile, it's going to be a busy week for road crews working on nearly 100 water main breaks throughout the area. eight of them reported in the district, 14 in montgomery county and two dozen in fairfax county. meanwhile, over in prince george's county, there's 53 te

that has northbound lanes of us-1 closed near cherry hill. we have tips on our app, search winter weather tips. one family continues to worry about timyra and miesha callaway. no one has seen these two girls, cousins, since friday. on the left is timyra callaway, just 11 years old. her cousin, miesha, is 17. they disappeared within hours of each other from madison street in northwest d.c. authorities say they might be together. of course, anyone who has seen these girls are asked to call police. and later this morning, friends and family will continue their search for a missing maryland man. daniel dehaven is his name. you're looking at him there on your screen. about 200 people spent part of yesterday looking for the 65-year-old who also suffers from dementia. he was last seen tuesday morning at a costco store on baltimore avenue in beltsvill

can help with the search, you can go to our nbc washington app and search "search help." time right now is 9:05. this morning, twin brothers are sitting in jail after spending time as robbery suspects on the run. take a look. officers arrested tyquise powell and tyrese powell in southeast. they're both 18 years old and police say they targeted construction workers in three separate incidents and that tyquise took part in two robberies last november. then just a few days before christmas, police say his brother, tyrese, helped in another robbery. and after days of sending mocking tweets to the leader of north korea, the president was back defending himself against new questions on the russia investigation. >> that's right, and there's now more new questions from that tell-all book about a dysfunctional white house. nbc's sarah dallof has more. >> reporter: in the midst of a retreat with congressional leaders, president donald trump on the defense again about

allegations his campaign colluded with russian officials. >> but everything that i've done is 100% proper. that's what i do is i do things proper. >> reporter: during a brief question-and-answer session with reporters at camp david, the president touched on the 2018 midterms. >> we need more republicans. we have to have more republicans. with that being said, i think we're going to go bipartisan. i think we're going to have some really great bipartisan bills. >> reporter: and on his own mental health, he described himself as a very stable genius in a tweet. >> why did you feel the need to tweet about that this morning? >> only because i went to the best colleges, or college, i went to a -- i had a situation where i was an excellent student, came out and made billions and billions of dollars. >> reporter: the tweets appear to be in response to a new tell-all book that alleges concerns amongst some white house aides. the president describes it as a work of fiction and he was supported by those republicans flanking him saturday. >> the president's policies have been achieving extraordinary results.

welcome back. check this one out. marcus mariota is rolling out of the pocket. the quarterback for the titans is going to throw, no, he's not, yes, he is! then he catches the ball and makes the touchdown. we've seen that play a couple of times in the history of the nfl, and this started a huge comeback last night for the titans that got them the win over the chiefs. that touchdown sparked a big second-half comeback. the titans eventually beat the chiefs 22-21. and they had trailed in that game 21-3. massive. quite a play right there. this weekend created some new millionaires. are you one of them? a winning ticket for the $55 million powerball jackpot was sold in new hampshire. the winning numbers were 12, 29, 30, 33, 61, and the powerball was 26. now, on friday, a winning ticket was sold in florida for the $450 million mega millions prize. so far, no one has come

"consumer reports" says one of the best ways to stay safe on slick roads is to prep these things on your car. >> cold weather

affect battery's performance, so it's a good idea to check the contacts are nice and solid and free of corrosion. it's also a really smart idea to check your battery every four years to see if it needs to be replaced. >> reporter: and while your hood is popped, top off your washer fluid. you'll need it to keep dirt, salt and ice from blocking your view. make sure you're using winter formula so the tank and nozzle won't freeze. now check the air pressure on your tires. cold weather can decrease air pressure, which can affect your car's handling and traction. that will be impacting one of your commutes. and then we have a major warm-up by the end of the week. the current temperatures right now, 13 degrees in washington, d.c., 12 in leesburg, 8 in gaithersburg, frederick, good morning, 9 degrees right now stepping outside your door. what does it feel like? 4 degrees is what it feels like in the district. still feeling like negative numbers out toward montgomery county. so, a chill to the air means you are going to need to put the little booties on the dogs, make sure they're warm out there. temperatures in the teens rising to the mid-to-upper 20s this afternoon. probably a better idea to work out indoors. if not, make sure you layer up. i'm going for a high of about 27 degrees as we head through your sunday evening. so, here's a look at the temperature trend. normal for this time of year, 43 degrees. we're going to bump this up to the mid-50s by thursday and then we could be knocking on the 60s' doors by friday. here's a look at tomorrow. a disturbance getting ready to pass through, a cold front. along its periphery, we have

playoffs. check this out. cleveland browns fans held their own sarcastic parade, but this was to celebrate their team's horrible season. you see, the browns became just the second team in nfl history to lose every single game of their season. 0-16. they didn't win one! nearly 3,000 fans showed up at the stadium to let management know they are not happy. the team released a statement saying they understand the fans' frustration. someone on twitter pointed out to me that this also raised money for a local food bank. >> oh, that's good. >> so, there was a good reason attached to this as well. but 0-16 is tough to take. >> that is. and they're not happy about it. >> i'll remind you, cleveland, you still have lebron james, so. >> okay? exactly. at least have your basketball team. >> come on, now. taking a look outside, ooh, it looks cold. it feels even colder. that sunshine, that is deceiving, because it's still freezing out there. we're tracking the temperatures on this weather alert day. and you know what that can do, it can give you the flu! it's been a rough season

there. the airport had to shut everything down, cancel more than 400 flights. take a look at the cell phone video here showing walls of people, their luggage stacked up. things weren't any better on the tarmac. dozens of planes forced to circle or sit there for hours. to make matters worse, two airplanes actually collided yesterday. no one was hurt. what a nightmare at that airport. and we're talking about the cold, so we're also talking about flu season. hospitals across the united states overwhelmed with this flu emergency that's sweeping across the country. >> so, the cdc says that the number of flu cases this year is far worse than last year at this very time, so tens of thousands have been affected in every state, and including some who already got the flu shot. so, health experts continue to worry with the peak of the season still just weeks away. nbc's national correspondent, miguel almaguer, has the details. >> i'm going to take a look in your throat here, okay? >> rt

from the cdc are no surprise to dr. kate katsong, another patient with flulike symptoms ending up in her e.r. so far this flu season, a staggering 41,719 cases have been reported, nearly three times more than this time last season. >> christian got it on the 21st, then jacob got it the 23rd, then i got it the 26th. >> reporter: outside portland, oregon, the frasier family fell like dominos, four children crippled by the flu. mom jamie is still sick today. >> christmas consisted of the ones who were sick wearing surgical masks to open their presents and then pretty much going back and laying in all of our beds again. >> reporter: it turns out, the frasier family was hit with two strains of the flu, even though the kids had their flu shots. last year at this time, the outbreak was widespread in 12 states.

this year, 46. >> we expect it to continue to rise, because everyone's been home with their families and now the schools are reopened, children are together again, people are packing the workplace. >> reporter: tonight it's unclear why this flu season is so bad. some hospitals are inundated, asking those who aren't severely ill to stay home. others are restricting visitors. in san diego, a surge tent is set up to triage flu patients. hospitals and families everywhere overwhelmed as the epidemic spreads. >> cold? we'll bundle you up. so, what would you collect from your home if you only had seconds to do it? that was the reality for some residents in these town homes you're about to see here. flames shooting out of their home there on softwood terrace in olney. this happened on saturday and about 20 adults and children had to look for a warm place to sleep last night. one firefighter was injured while battling this blaze. fire officials say the fire

using flammable liquid to restart the fire in their fireplace. news4 spoke with a resident who described this emotional scene. >> i smelled smoke and i heard some screaming outside. and i went upstairs and everybody was just kind of freaking out. so i really only had a couple of seconds to grab my things and run outside. >> the red cross is helping some of those residents, and firefighters are making their rounds in the neighborhood, taking advantage of this opportunity to remind people about fire safety. >> look at all that frozen water as well. a former d.c. charter school teacher has been charged with sexually abusing a child. d.c. police say robert leach fled the country but was eventually detained in england and since then brought back here to the united states. now, the alleged abuse happened between 2011 and 2013 while leach worked at the school on 13th street and northwest. the victim, a student, told police about it in 2014. polha

name of that charter school. meanwhile, an elementary school lunch aide has been hit with child pornography charges. maryland state police arrested sean kelley of silver spring on friday. he's been working at cloverly elementary school and kids after hours, which is a daycare at cannon road elementary school. kelley is now on administrative leave at the school and no longer works at kids after hours. police believe that the photos discovered on his computer are not of students in montgomery county public schools. and passengers couldn't help but panic at the airport in toronto friday night after two planes collided with one another, catching fire on the tarmac. take a look. [ screaming ] >> yeah, that's scary. you can hear the passengers screaming as they felt the impact and saw the other plane's wing catch fire. the passengers were on a westjet flight that had just arrived from cancun. there was no one on the other plane, but it was backing up when

passengers were able to see the whole incident play out. >> all of a sudden it started venting fuel all over the wing, and then in about a second or two later, not even a second, it just kind of all ignited and there was a big fireball. then everyone started yelling and panicking. >> that's scary. everyone evacuated using those emergency slides. no one was hurt. this next story, we've been doing it this morning, i can't get over it. >> oh, yeah, this one. >> some thieves in italy. >> oh, my goodness. >> they stole millions of dollars worth of royal jewelry from a show at a popular tourist spot. >> we were just talking about how did this happen, though, right? >> how did it happen? >> all right, so, here's the story. it sounds like a hollywood heist movie, but this actually really happened. and matt bradley breaks it down for us. take a look. >> reporter: it had all the makings of a hollywood heist film. >> we've got four minutes to load and leave. let's go! >> reporter: without any of the adrenaline or sophistication,

version of "the italian job" lacked in style, it made up for in audacity. in a daytime robbery on wednesday at the popular tourist attraction, the doge palace museum in venice, on the last day of a worldwide exhibition tour, two thieves made off with an estimated millions of dollars in indian jewels, diamond earrings and a diamond pendant owned by the royal family of qatar. they made it look easy. no car chases or cracked safe. one burglar on lookout tries to appear inconspicuous as another pilfers the jewels from a display case. "they escaped by mixing in with the visitors," said italian police. when the alarm went off, police launched a wide-ranging investigation and manhunt to track down those responsible. investigators suspect the burglars had help. they were somehow able to delay the alarm, which didn't go off until they were already making their escape. a brazen burglary giving hollywood a run for its money.

so, a senate committee member says there was no sonic weapon attack on american diplomats in cuba. senator jeff flake says he believes the cuban government's account of the alleged sonic attack that made u.s. diplomats sick holds up. he says the fbi found no evidence of diplomats being attacked with an unknown weapon. some people reported hearing a noise before the sickness that hit them, al

well, news4's darcy spencer spent time in georgetown this weekend on what's normally a busy saturday night. here's what she found. >> reporter: the potomac river frozen over in georgetown overlooking the kennedy center. along the waterfront, the fountain is flowing, but this doesn't look like a typical saturday date night. the extreme cold has driven many indoors, some did venture out to the bars and restaurants, but the outdoor fire pit deserted. vanessa is one of the brave ones. she went to dinner with her sorority sisters. what's it like being out in this cold? is it horrible? is it okay? >> it's definitely not horrible. it's okay. i mean, it's only cold when i'm outside, when i'm commuting. so i'm layered up right now. it's warm in the inside. it's not too bad. >> reporter: the bitter cold didn't stop some from lacing up their skates and hitting the ice rink. they're bundled up, and the exercise helps keep them warm. you knew what you were getting into, right? >> yeah. i mean, i wasn't expecting it to be this cold, but it's pretty
