martin mcdonagh, you know how i feel about being your mildred hayes. her every ragged inhalation and fierce exhalation is evidence of my gratitude. our producer, graham broadbent, thank you for listening to me and valuing my input. to fox searchlight, who allowed our film to find its audience and we are still putting people in the seats of brick and mortar cinemas around the country. call me old-fashioned, but i love that. and have i mentioned my two favorite cowboys, sam and woody, because they are. then i will have to list the entire cast and crew of our film because everybody brought their best game to this one. the very best game. for instance, i cannot throw a baseball for

we hit a record of 1 below zero at dallas airport and 8 at dulles. temperatures outside were only in the teens, 19 at d.c., 18 in roswell. whatever falls tomorrow, once it hits this very cold ground, it is going to freeze and why we have the winter advisory. here is the storm system itself. there is warmer air. it won't matter much. >> changing to sleet and eventually to rain. for us, we have a winter weather advisor and goes through the 7:00 hour through the areas in purple and doesn't include southern maryland. i will take you hour-by-hour as far as the sleet and rain and snow. and the temperatures, too, over the next couple of days. see you in a minute.

caused even more water main breaks this weekend. one includes college park route. route 1. it's one of four along the same line in recent days. it's mostly due to aging water mains. the one that burst today is more than 80 years old. steam coverage continues. this long stretch of weather caused howard university to postpone classes more than a week. other parts av campus are dealing with a faulty boiler system. dorothy spencer is live in northwest d.c. now with more on this story. >> reporter: i'm standing outside the annex. one of the classrooms on campus and the steam pipes caused significant damage. you can

out at this hour. it will take at least a month to get it back open. leandra gardner is moving back into the residence hall at howard university but she and thousands of other students won't return to class monday as expected because the extreme cold has caused damage across the campus. >> it's kind of good because it gives us an extra week to get ourselves together. >> reporter: the told caused steam pipes to burst filling two classroom buildings, douglas hall and the annex with moisture. that hot air got into the ceiling tiles. they had to be ripped out on every floor, the air so moist it even fogged our camera lens. >> this is our main physical therapy lab for this college. we had just got finished remodeling this space and it's a total loss. >> reporter: they will treat the building to prevent mold.

the cold also caused problems for the campus boiler system so some buildings don't have consistent heat. howard has it in 4 of the 9 residence halls. >> we've asked students to delay coming to campus and the most comfortable place they will have is in their homes. >> reporter: they're working around the clock trying to get the campus ready for return on january 16th. >> that's the only good thing, get more sleep and chill and prepare for classes. >> reporter: back out loud you're looking down the side walk at the building where these workers are continuing in these extreme cold conditions to try to vent the steam in front of the building. officials say they house more than 4,000 students on campus. as of earlier only 300 had returned and the ones we spoke to were taking it pretty well. >> d

new tonight, a possible break in the search for a missing maryland man with dementia. prince george's county police say 60-year-old daniel dehaven may have been picked up last tuesday by a driver as he walked along route 1. officers believe that driver dropped dehaven off in gamble and a nearby county. they have been looking for him for days and last seen at a costco store. inside a car in silver springs, somebody called police after spotting a body inside a vehicle on thayer avenue. it came around 5:30 this evening. it's still early but detectives do not suspect foul play. they haven't identified the man yet. a family is grieving after a teenager who was shot more than a year ago in northeast d.c. died this weekend. a gunman shot 17-year-old

coulter on jay street in 2016. he died friday. an autopsy showed he had in fact been shot and nobody arrested in this case. a brazen early morning jewelry store heist at an upscale jeweler in the district. the owner is wondering if it is the same person who hit the store a few days before christmas. somebody threw a rock through the store about 2:30 in the morning and smashed two display cases. and we spoke to the owner what he plans to do next. >> you cross your fingers when you go home at night, everything is locked up. i think a gate is coming soon. >> there is surveillance video of the break-in and police could release that soon. there is a process to remove the president of the united states from office if they are unable to performe

to drive. ice is a completely different matter. freezing rain led to numerous crashes in southwest missouri. all over the place and trucks hauling boats, sliding into ditches and fortunately no serious injuries have been reported. check out this video in chicago. a broken sprinkler made a building look like an ice castle. water streamed down the side of the building. police were concerned it would thaw and closed down a nearby street. the metro green line was a little breezier today. this was the annual no pants metro ride. dozens of riders didn't let the cold stop them from stripping down and some even took their pants off before they got inside the metro station today. did we mention they took their clothes off? it was to laugh and have fun and make

if you have a wind like that you get a little bit of wind chill. in d.c., at 7 degrees, 10 in gaithersburg. and 9 at indianapolis. what that means is we have a chance for ice. we have a winter weather advisory in effect tomorrow afternoon. the arias highlighted in purple, not including waldorf and fredericksburg. even you could get a little ice. ice this is big concern. it's really 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. now. this will be a mess and that evening commute could be a real problem because of the rain and ice. this is not a very powerful system so it won't have a lot of moisture. it does not take a lot of ice to produce big-time disastrous results. this will not be tomorrow morning.

fine. 8:00, looking okay. cold when you wake up. when we move through the noon hour, this is sleet. i think it will be sleet first. we see more sleet and areas of plain rain. because temperatures are so cold, the rain will fall and freeze on the surface. that's why it will be such a big issue. 6:00 moving to the south. temperatures should moderate above freezing. because it's so cold it will take a little while. here we are at 7:00 a.m., well below freezing. watch what happens as we move to the noon hour as the precip moves in. we're above freezing. 36 in fredericksburg. it will fall as plain rain. because we've been so cold a whole week, well below zero that means we will see around 3 o'clock, d.c. ar

during the day. tomorrow, temperatures will stay up tomorrow night. anything that is there as far as the ice goes, i do think we will see melting tomorrow night, some good news. by tuesday morning looking a little better. ice on the roadways and sidewalks. rush hour could be very difficult. bring your ice scraper. you may not need it tomorrow morning but you may need it with a coating of ice. the temperatures looking a little better. 45 degrees on tuesday and wednesday, 41. look at that. 55 degrees on thursday. let's stay in the 50s the next couple of days. thursday, friday, saturday and sunday, we do get back to the 30s next week. at least we have some 50s. >> does that look messy? >> rain and 50s? yes. chuck bell will have the latest on "news4 today." >> thanks, doug. still ahead, the

it was a win for the maryland men but probably should have been a lot better. >> it should have been. it was a little scary in the beginning but they were able to pull it off. the maryland basketball team trounced another big opponent today after being trounced themselves. terps lost by 30 to number 1 michigan state. and the iowa hawkeyes, the worst team in the conference, after a while they got going with a powerful performance from a freshman looking for their third conference win hosting iowa. a three point game, passing to derek, the dunk, 14 points for him and a few minutes later, anthony with a strong move takes it to the rack.
