i'm aaron gilchrist. >> i'm eun yang. thanks for joining us on this weather alert day. a few school closures we are learning about in maryland. frederick, howard and anne arundel schools will close three hours early. montgomery schools will close two and a half hours early. charles and prince georges county schools will close two hours early. afternoon and evening activities including the board of education meeting are canceled. in virginia, prince william county schools are closing three hours early. arlington and alexandria city will close two hours early. falls church city schools are on an early release schedule and day care will close at 4:00 p.m. there. a lot of other districts canceled classes because of the extreme cold. the early dismissals and cancellations are closing in the bottom of the screen and they're in the nbc washington app. let's head

causing these delays and early releases. >> along the periphery we have the wintry weather and this is going to be causing a real headache for that evening commute. i want to show you where it is situated and the leading edge is crossing over the i-81 corridor. the pink color on the radar is denoting the sleet, freezing ra rain that's getting ready to fall and we are under a winter weather advisory and goes into effect until 3:00 p.m. and this will be impacting the entire evening commute and we have those early dismissals from school. a wintry mix which means black ice. we'll detail this a little bit more as well as take a look at the forecast. >> somara, we'll see you in a bit and to a developing story in southwest d.c. firefighters battled a hy

fire at the marina this morning. d.c. fire posted this video of the flames when they arrived on the scene. news 4's adam tus has bes h latest from the marina. >> the fire's out and it's been out for some time and luckily no one was hurt and take a look at where it started at that plank right there in the marina and one of the boats next to the fire was not an easy fight. the fire, the water, the ice all made for tricky conditions. as the flames burned at the james creek marina a d.c. fireboat battling as best it could. fire crews also responding on foot. dramatic images show just how intense this boat fire was, two boats fully engulfed and this is what the scene was as the sun rose. charred out shells of what was. even the neighboring boats damaged, the dock, blackened. >> shocked. ye

of the boat next to the boat where the whole fire started. his boat which was closed up for the winter is obviously now a complete loss. >> we bought the boat in 2013, so what is that? five years now, so lots of good trips and lots of good memories. we would take it down to the bay. so -- >> vito says it could have been worse. just yesterday their fireboat broke through some ice on the water to make sure that they could get out quickly. >> because they did that they were able to get to this incident within 20 minutes. it normally would have taken them ten if there was no ice. if they hadn't broken the ice yesterday it would have probably taken them 45 minutes and they played a key role in extinguishing this fire. >> reporter: the good news, no one hurt, but some memories now gone forever. quite a scene here this morning and back here now live. now there are signs posted all over this

owners tell me not to try to heat their boats with things like space heaters. investigators are still looking for clues about what started this fire, but those are the messages that are being delivered today, guys. back to you. >> adam tuss live for us in southwest. adam, thanks. a water main break has part of east-west highway at new hampshire avenue in takoma park shut down, as you can see here. the crews are on the scene and have a lot of work to do. only one eastbound lane and two westbound lanes are getting by. we are told this work will last through the afternoon. we'll alert you when everything wraps up in the nbc washington app. this cold weather is causing problems at howard university, too. >> the school has postponed classes for more than a week now. the cold caused steam pipes to burst filling two classroom buildings in douglas hall and the annex with moisture. giant hoses were installed to vacuum the moisture outn

to prevent mold. it caused problems for the campus's boiler system so some would aboutings don't have consistent heat. >> the comfortable setting that the students will have is in their homes. >> it gives us an extra week to get ourselves together. classes are expected to resume january 16th. if you drive into d.c. you will need to wait longer to use beach drive. a stretch of the road was supposed to re-open today and beach drive between it woulden and park and broad branch and bragden road has been closed for construction since august. it will now reopen by next monday. we'll let you know when the park service announces a new plan and whether there are more delays. chopper 4 was over the scene of a bad crash this morning. it was in the loop of the beltway. melissa mollet says the backup was six miles long. sera

expected to be okay, though. a disturbing find inside a car in silver spring. police got a call at 5:30 after someone spotted a body in the vehicle. that was found off dale drive. right now the man's name has not been released and police do not suspect foul play. we are following new details in the search for a missing man with dementia. >> prince georges county police say 65 daniel dehaven may have been picked up last tuesday as he walked along route 1 and last seen at the costco in beltsville. >> moments ago search parties met at the fire department. news 4's justin finch is live with the very latest. just snin. >> we spoke with dehaven's family a short time ago and right now the volunteers are meeting at the beltsville firehouse and the plan is to leave no lead unturned and here is a l

dehaven, 65 years old about 5'9" and diagnosed with dementia and he is non-verbal though he does answer to the name, his name, danny. he has been missing now for nearly a week, of course. of course, an agonizing time for his family knowing he's somewhere out there in those cold temperatures and his family, of course, looking for him since last tuesday and over the weekend volunteers did join in the search and sunday came that lead from police. a lead that the family is calling credible that dehaven was seen in the area of arundel high school in anne arundel county and he may have been dropped off from the route 1 area in gambrils by an unknown driver. i asked the family if they had ties to the area and they say they do have some which is why that is a lead they do now want to check out. they is set up

carrying a secret government satellite. northrop grumman made the satellite, code name zum abu the company won't say what government agency they made it for. the rocket had a safe landing after taking the satellite into space. always cool to see. two ships collided in a fiery wreckage off of china's east coast over the weekend. right now 32 crewmen remain missing. this happened saturday. a u.s. navy plane joined up with chinese and south korean search and rescue crews looking for any signs of survivors. most of those who were onboard were iranian. the ship was an oil tanker from iran on its way to south korea. today malaysian officials are set to announce a new search for mh-370. that plane was carrying 239 people from kuala lumpur to beijing in march 2014. a u.s.-based exploration, and somebody may have deliberately

the boeing 777 before diverting the plane, and several aircraft debris had collected from the indian ocean. residents in parts of santa barbara, california, have until noon today to evacuate. an incoming storm is expected to cause mudslides and flooding in areas torched by recent wildfires including the thomas fire. you can see some of those areas on the screen. it includes wealthy montecito, california. other evacuations have also been order. starting today metro riders are not allowed to carry negative balances on their smart trip card. one way to avoid the negative balance is to sign up with the auto reload system. it will add money to the smart trip card when the balance drops below $10. unresolved negative balances through the years have added to $25 million in lost revenues. a lot of money, and there could be another change coming for metro riders

involves putting money back into your pocket. metro wants to give riders a credit on the smart trip cards if they're delayed by 15 minutes or more. metro plans to ask the board to approve the proposal on thursday. if it gets approved it could take effect by the end of this month. metro says it's all about winning riders back to the system. this weekend, virginia voters appealed a federal judge's decision denying their request for a new election. the result of this appeal could determine which party can control the house and delegates. 147 people received the wrong ballots in the stafford county area. republican bob thomas beat democrat joshua cole. they have a 59-49 edge in the virginia house. it is one of hollywood's biggest nights. we are talking about the golden globe awards. >> the show aired right here on nbc and will no doubt be a big topic of conversation still today from the winners to the

things you need to know. it will be hitting during the afternoon commute. a wintry mix out there. we are expecting d.c. and north to see that wintry mix. rain is going to be the situation in southern maryland, so a lot warmer, farther south and remember, that freezing rain on untreated roads means black ice and here's a look at the radar and look at how close it is in parts of frederick, maryland and we're talking about sleet and freezing rain and where you're seeing the shading in portions up to accident, maryland. all in all, this is about to bank toward the east and take a look right now on the futurecast model is running slower than the system actually is, but we are going to be seeing areas in the district and north get that wintry precip. again, farther south looking like rain. notice the timing on this. it's going to be wrapping up into rain and moving out by about 9:00, 10:00 tonight and behind it, we do get clearing and drying and things really start to improve and again,

main break at the intersection of new hampshire avenue. we are told the work won't be finished until some time this afternoon. fire officials are trying to figure out what sparked flames at a d.c. marina. two boats were destroyed when they were ignited in the marina and no one was hurt. new video this morning. a firefighter is responding to a fire at trump tower in manhattan. the president is here in washington and was not there at the time. we are told it was an electrical fire that sparked on the roof. no one was hurt and no one had to be evacuated. the president is back in the white house trying to focus policy. in a short time he will head to nashville for a major policy address. >> news of the tell-all book "fire and fury" continues to dominate much of the national conversation and as news 4's tracie potts says he will soon meet with the man investigating his campaign robert mueller. >> reporter: president trump and his administration going after this book's author. a key insider apologizing for what he said

a mess for morning commuters in downtown boston. this was behind city hall. the boston water and sewer commission first tweeted they thought the issue was a water main break. it took crews four hours to get everything under control. now that water is turning into ice, as you can imagine, causing even more problems. this is cold weather. you forget, it compounds and the water main and then you have ice and people slipping on the roads are causing accidents and schools are closing early. >> speaking of which. the stafford county schools will close early. it's a staggered closure and they will close probably two hours early. >> and this for the timing of the winter weather that's arriving tomorrow. >> it's coming right in the critical moment when everyone is going home to pick up the kiddos. again, this system is quick moving and it will be out of here late tonight and it's hitting during the important time. here's what you need to know. take a look at what you can expect. first, actually, that's right. we have footage right now. this is just south of

snow farther north and west you head. for us it will be more of a wintry mix and temperatures will make it into the low to mid-30s this afternoon. here's a look at what you can expect. we have ice on the roadways as we head through the afternoon and evening as well as sidewalks impacting roads that haven't been treated. rush hour will be difficult. make sure you bring your ice scrapers and maybe you have errands to run in the afternoon and here's where it's at on the radar. it's the pink and that's where you are seeing the wintry precip, and freezing rain. you head farther back to the video in hagerstown and that's where they're seeing snow. that's crossing over i-81 and it will continue to sweep toward the washington, d.c. area and here is a look at the future models this afternoon and i think just earlier, in fact, than at 4:00, we could start to see this arrive in the area and the biggest point i want you to take home is the line of demti
