the sidewalks and the roads ahead of the morning rush. we saw a lot of folks shuffling carefully down the sidewalks in arlington tonight. and before you go to bed, we want to warn you the ice is delaying some school districts tomorrow morning. here are some of the larger districts going in late. almost all students in northern virginia will get to sleep in. montgomery county schools in maryland also operating on a delay. you can see all of the delays scrolling on the bottom of your screen during this broadcast and in our nbc washington app. but now let's get to chief meteorologist doug kammerer. doug, what do we have in store for us tomorrow? >> ice out there this evening. and even though temperatures are above freezing, the ground has been so cold for so long, over two weeks, that is why we continue to see ice in some areas. now, the rain, the sleet, the freezing rain, it is all out of here. take a look at storm team 4 radar you can see where this rain is, down to the south and east. it is all rain. aroundl

maryland. but the system came through earlier today with that sleet, with that freezing rain. the temperatures were right about freezing or just a little bit above. and once the sun went down, once the sun went down we really saw the ice start to take over, especially in toward driveways and sidewalks. sidewalks have been a mess all across the area and even? localized streets. especially up toward northern portions of montgomery county i've gotten a lot of reports here. but notice the temperature. it's 38 right now in washington. that's the warmest temperature we've seen all year so far. 39 camp springs. 34 in gaithersburg. but we will continue to see the numbers come back down. that means more ice will continue to form. some areas that are above freezing around boston, around the metro station there, jackie bensen there live. and we're talking about temperatures that are above freezing but ice still a big issue even there. >> reporter: and you nailed exactly when we started to hear from people via twitter and other means, when the sun went down. this is what we started seeing. this has salt

it is still pretty slippery. i'm trying to keep from sliding here. we have some video to show you what it looked like earlier. there are a lot of sidewalks. this is an urban area. a lot of people walking here. all of them doing that -- i think somebody described it as the penguin walk to try to keep from falling. in an area where you have a metro, like where we are, and you have a lot of people walking, the sidewalks being in this condition despite being salted is a concern. you mentioned montgomery county. they and other fire and rescue departments throughout the area have been very busy tonight. a lot of those calls have been for what they call slip and falls. people who slip on the ice and fall down and injury themselves. again, if you were out tonight, you're walking from a metro station, walking anywhere around this area, please be very, very careful. because the roads for the most part appear to be in very good shape. but wow, the sidewalks are very dangerous tonight. live in arlington, jacki

right into this building. take a look at all of this damage. this is a piece of her car. right over here you have a part of the engine. there are bricks and blinds and all types of debris all over this place. now, let's show you video that shows you the actual suv smash into the apartment. a montgomery county spokesperson says a woman was in the unit at the time this evening. fortunately, she is okay. investigators also released photos showing the damage from inside the unit, the kitchen and living room. this is on the 7000 block of clarendon road in bethesda. the driver was trapped inside the suv. firefighters rescued her. medics drove her to a hospital. she has serious but not life-threatening injuries. meanwhile, firefighters evacuated people from this building. there are three units in which seven people live, and they cannot live in this building because you see these cracks. they extend all the

building. so these folks, you know, cannot live here. the red cross is providing temporary food and housing vouchers. and we'll continue to bring you updates on this story as it becomes available on our nbc washington app. in bethesda, shomari stone, news 4. leon harris here at the live desk looking ahead to tomorrow, when north and south korea will doing? that they haven't done in more than two years, talk face to face. new video shows south korea's delegation leaving seoul on their way to the demilitarized zone. that's the area that divides both those countries. the two sides are going to meet to talk about how they're going to cooperate in next month's winter olympics in the south. it was north korean leader kim jong un who pushed for the talks. his country launched several miss many tests in the past year and that has drawn president trump into the middle of all this where he and kim have traded personal indults toward each other. but tomorrow's meeting has its critics. they say kim is using it to divide the south and the u.s. in

president. both a time, place, and location have not been finalized. >> prosecutors want a live body in front of them for lots of reasons, including they want to be able to assess tone and inflection. they want to ask follow-up questions. they want to be able to probe. >> also tonight the white house blasted a report from ax yos. the website news outlet cited sources that mr. trump is spending less time working and more time watching television and tweeting. you've heard about thieves going after your personal items you that leave inside your car. but a group of thieves in alexandria wanted some of the items on the outside. last friday morning thieves took car doors from vehicles inside this condo garage on south pitt street. the garage is supposed to be secure or at least that's what residents thought. police tell us it took the crooks four hours to dismantle car doors

bags. >> it is very disturbing. i've lived here since the building became a condo. so it's very, very upsetting to me. >> in one case the car had golf clubs in the trunk still but the thieves didn't take them. the crooks did leave one clue behind. an oakland a's hat. just last month criminals stole car doors from some vehicles in arlington and in baltimore. it's unclear if the cases are related. a guilty plea today in an ms-13 gang murder. a brutal one. 17-year-old venus areheda admitted killing 15-year-old denaris reyes of gaithersburg last january. the gang took cell phone video of the killing to promote themselves to gang leaders in el salvador. that video has been used against them in trials. so far seven of ten have admitted guilt or been found guilty. the commonwealth's attorney says he'll be seeking a

>> reporter: juan cortez is upset on this gloomy cold night in montgomery county, maryland. the trump administration announced its plan to end temporary protected status or the tps program for immigrants from el salvador. it allowed 200,000 salvadorans to live and work in the u.s. legally. >> i work hard for a long time in this country. i come in this country '94. >> reporter: juan moved here from el salvador 23 years ago. he has a wife and three kids. he signed up with tps in 2001. he bought this truck and started a construction, snow removal company. >> reporter: a small group of protesters demonstrated in front of the white house. they want tps to stay for salvadorans. back in 2001 deadly earthquakes hit el salvador, destroying infrastructure, leaving thousands of homeless. the u.s. allowed their citizens to apply for temporary protected status.

along the georgetown sidewalks a little earlier of frederick, leesburg. there's no rain anymore. the rain is out of here. if it's not frozen we'll start to see things dry a little bit. but everything's going to be refreezing tonight because temperatures are going to go down. here's the cold front making its way on through the area. you can see all the moisture well down to the south and east after bringing us that little bit. it was enough to create ice. but that little bit of sleet, even some snow up toward the frederick area and some freezing rain around the rest of the area. notice the temperatures. 32 in gaithersburg and frederick. this is the area i'm worried about currently. even out toward leesburg, even out toward manassas we have a lot of frozen ground here. we're bringing in a lot of reports for these locations. herndon. a lot of reports around herndon area for ice. that is going to be a big problem overnight. look at the temperatures. let's time these out. this is future temperatures going through tonight into 6:00 tomorrow morning. notice where we are. 31 d.c. back into the 20s some

locations. earlier tonight we were hoping that we would see delays for many of the area's school districts, and that's exactly what we have, because watch what happens by 10:00 tomorrow. everybody now above freezing. we start to see the melting. not only that, we'll start to see the sunshine. things will melt very, very quickly after 8:00, 9:00. i really think the two-hour delay is going to mean all the world to the kids getting out there, whether it's the sidewalks or the driveways that are going to be iced over early tomorrow morning. the cold air has been in place. the pattern has been locked. this lock finally getting popped. we've got the warm air make its way our way. the cold air moves back to the west. and we do get on the warmer side of this for the next few days. this is the warmest we've been in two weeks. 47 tuesday, 44 wednesday. 50 on thursday. 60 degrees on friday. friday a good chance for some rain. this is actually from a pretty big storm that will bring us some rain friday and into saturday. but
