>> that is a storm team 4 weather alert on this tuesday morning. you may be able to see why here. there were freezing temperatures last night and things could be a little slick when you head out this morning. we've got it covered for you. 5:01. good morning. i'm aaron gilchrist i'm eun yang. we're nine days into the year and most of them have been filled with bad weather. we've had it all, right? >> that's true. as always, we're working for you with what you need to know to get your family where they need to go safely. we'll check in, in a second. several school districts are giving students extra time to get to class because of that threat of ice left over from yesterday. we learned that st. mary's county schools are on a two-hour delay. >> in addition to the schools i'm about to read, there are a number of private schools delayed. all the schools are running at the bottom of the screen. montgomery, charles, anne arundel and frederick county on a two-hour delay. fairfax, rappahannock,

county schools on a delay. manassas city, manassas park city are opening two hours late. for your forecast to find out what we can expect before you head out, let's check in with sheena parveen. sheena, good morning. >> we have this morning patchy ice. this is why we have a weather alert. better safe than sorry. not everyone is below freezing. most of the area, in fact, is if the roads have not been treated, the sidewalks not treated in your area, you most likely have some ice. we've been getting reports of ice in much of northern virginia and northern maryland because of the cold temperatures this morning with that precip that we had last night. look at the temperatures now. mid-20s gaithersburg, dulles, manassas. 32 in lorton. 23 in frederick with reports of ice there. 30 in leesburg. another issue, look at this dense fog. less than a half-mile visibility through a good portion of the area. be very careful driving. let's head out to

expect. >> my ride in was definitely was difficult to start wlet get a look at the current conditions. temperatures in the district above freezing, but feeling like it's 26 degrees. here's what you can expect while you hit the road. give yourself time to take your time. we're expecting the treated roads to be wet and slick. the untreated roads, that's where you'll find the black ice. take your time. heading throughout the day, we'll see your fog. that's the good news. melissa, how is it looking? >> you're right. the untreated roads really the problem. the sidewalks, the driveways, all of those spots a little gross this morning because of that icy coating. taking a look right now at a couple of trouble spots. here is one. inbounds 5 after 231, icy conditions and several spin-outs reported there. we do have areas, even though it seems like a main road, might be treated, still a little slick. inner and outer loop of the beltway ok

going on there. we'll see t back to you. because of this weather, we've been talking about school delays. calvert county schools in maryland, two hours late as well. here's what we're talking about when hee say take your time on the roads. what ice may be left to blame for a crash that happened in bethesda. a woman's suv skidded off the road and smashed into this apartment building on clarendon road. you can see damage both inside and outside of the apartment. all three families living in the building were displaced because of the damage. take a lock at the car. the driver was trapped in the suv and had to be rescued by firefighters. she's in the hospital with serious injuries. cleanup is under way at a historic landmark in montgomery county. flooded the basement at the historic clara barton. there's no major damage but there is an inch of water in the basement. most of the valuable

it's 5:06. a man accused of killing two teens the night before their graduation will go on trial. jose canales-yanez's case will only be heard by a judge. he waived his right to a jury trial. he's one of the people accused in the deaths of the two teens. they were found shot to death in a car back in june hours before their graduation from northwest high school. police believe they were killed in revenge of a robbery of canales-yanez's girlfriend the search continues for a missing prince george's county man who has dementia. today marks one week since he was seen at the costco in beltsville. he's about 5'9" with salt and pepper hair. dozens of people joined to search for him. they've expanded the search into anne arundel county. he may have been given a ride to the gam bebrell

safer in prince george's county a korccording to police. >> they say violent crime is going down. adam tuss has a lock at the newest statistics. adam, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, eun. certainly this is great news for prince george's county. a county that has been battling crime for so long. now the police chief here says crime is down more than 50% over the last decadement take a look. there was a press conference yesterday where not only the police chief but the county executive and the multiple other officials came out to tout the statistics. really something that they were absolutely wanting to show off. let take a closer look at the numbers here. we're talking about big-time statistics here. 18 fewer murders than in 2016. 6.6% drop in violent crime. the 7th year in a row with the reduction in crime. county executive rushern baker

>> how do we make sure what you see today is not an anomaly. this is seven years of work that will continue into 2018. one of the things that they also pointed out is that this reduction in crime leads to renewed entrance to invest here in the county and things like economic development. that's something that's positive in terms of going forward here and last year, the county averaged about 49 crimes per day. that is way down compared to what it had been previously, guys. so that's good news for prince george's county. back to you. >> adam tuss. ta thank you. democrats will host a news conference to discuss reinstating net neutrality. late last year the fcc repealed those rules. net neutrality prevented internet providers from

connection fees based on those preferences. democrats want to put the rules back in place. the press conference is scheduled for 10:30 at the capitol. this morning, the president is back in washington after visits to tennessee and georgia. his legal team is reportedly considering the possibilities of trump sitting down to be interviewed as part of the ongoing russia investigation. it's unclear whether that interview, if it happens, would be conducted by robert mueller himself. coming up in a few minutes, tracie potts will join us live from capitol hill with the latest. fires to the end zone. touchdown! alabama wins! >> you just sought moment the university of alabama won its 11th national championship. the crimson tide rolled over georgia in overtime. if you went to bed before midnight, it looked like it was going to be the

5:15. bra breaking news at reagan national airport. justin finch is in that area right now. justin, are you seeing anything? >> yes, we are. fake a look, eun. crews are setting up to divert traffic away from that ramp. this is the southbound gw parkway. the entrance ramp that will take you through the airport. that area is now shut down because a water main had broken off of that ramp. traffic is now being -- airport traffic, rather, is being diverted. the airport -- they have a detour as i said or enter via route 1 in crystal city. the airport is up and running at this time but as you can see, the conditions with the fog out here, slick patches, they want you to be extra safe making your way to the airport out there. just so you know that southbound gw parkway entrance to reagan is

new details in the death of a bethesda teen. >> the owners of the home where they were allegedly drinking will not face charges. investigators say the 17-year-old had a bottle of vodka and two fake i.d.s when his body was found in a ravine near river road. that vodka was purchased outside of montgomery county. sepehri was a senior at walt whitman high school. he died from acute alcohol -- complicated by drowning and hypothermia. a rallying cry at the white house. a threat of deportation. the new immigration battle and what it means for thousands of local families. i'm adam tuss. prince george's county leaders say crime is way down in the county. i'm going to tell you why that may lead to a

humanitarian policy. nearly 200,000 people from el salvador who have been allowed to live and work in the u.s. for more than a decade are facing an uncertain future. the options, leave the country by next year or face deportation. today the president will host a white house meeting on immigration. >> tracie potts joins us live from capitol hill with details. tracie, what's this conversation going to look like? >> well, it could look like one side versus another side. we'll see if they come to any agreement, eun. the bottom line is that this will be a bipartisan meeting. we're expecting democrats and republicans from leadership. they're trying to negotiate a new budget, including some things that both sides want on immigration. republicans want to see more border security. democrats want to see protection for young immigrants brought here illegally that runs out in march, the daca a program we've been talking so much about. president trump is bringing them into the white house, hoping to

now, the president wants that wall. his spending plan includes $18 billion for the wall. it's a lot of money to spend. republicans say democrats aren't cooperating on border security and vice versa. this is the president trying to mediate what's not working here on capitol hill to get immigration taken care of and to get the budget in place. >> tracie potts on the hill this morning. tracie, thank you. a new york city firefighter and two other people suffered minor injuries when a fire broke out on top of the trump tower. the secret service first spotted the fire in a cooling unit on the roof deck yesterday morning. president trump owns the penthouse and tower, but he was not there at the time. his son eric trump tweeted thanks to the fire department for people calling the fdny. mitt romney was treated for prostate cancer last

the cancer did not spread beyond the prostate. the next few weeks, romney is expected to announce plans to run for orrin hatch's senate seat. he was elected in 1977 and has been the longest serving republican senator in u.s. history. medical marijuana users in maryland may have to give up their right to own a gun. marijuana is illegal at the federal level and federal gun laws ban drug users from owning or buying firearms. the baltimore sun reports maryland state police asked potential gun buyers to ask if they have a medical marijuana card. they told card holders they cannot buy guns. they even tell card holders to turn over weapons they already own. trying a new approach to slow our opioid crisis. as scott macfarlane and the i-team reports, there are reports to skyrocketing number of deaths from a

is now going to prosecute manufacturers of fentanyl overseas if that fentanyl comes to the united states and causes deaths here. that announcement comes amid a surge of cases, a string of seizures of drugs, including fentanyl at dulles international airport. the chemists make the drugs overseas and ship the drugs here. officers seized some inside food packaging, even lollipops. others were inside passenger luggage. the deputy, u.s. attorney general told news 4 that they've brought two criminal cases against these international manufacturers. >> this is the first time we've actually indicted by name chinese chemists in china who are alleged to have supplied fentanyl as a result of injuries or death in the united states. >> coming up tonight at 11:00, wie go behind the scenes with u.s. customs officers when they see a suitcase they suspect has

a look at the newest -- the news for prince george's county, adam? >> reporter: absolutely, eun. it's always good to present these figures when you can talk about a positive trend when it comes to crime. like all of this, it's interrelated. when it comes to crimes and how it relates to investing in the communities, prince george's county leaders say it's making a difference. take a look. there was a big press conference yesterday. the police chief, the county executive rushern baker and others unveiled the statistics. this is a positive news story for the county in terms of what it means forg getting the count back on the right foot. violent crime and overall crime down 50% over the last seven years. that's a positive trend. let's take a closer look at the numbers as well. 18 fewer murders than in 2016. a 6.6% drop in violent crimes and the 7th year in a row with a reduction in crime. guys, as i mentioned, that

a positive trend for the county. police chief hank so win ski talking about that yesterday. >> we make sure what you see today is not an anomaly. this is seven years of work that's going to continue into 2018. >> reporter: one of the things the police chief was talking about is the number of crimes that his officers are actually able to close. the cases that they're able to close and that leads to an increased reduction in crime. so definitely a positive trend here in prince george's county. overall crime trending downward. again, the county executive and other officials saying that that is leading to reinvestment here in the county as people start to have a more favorable view of things here. back to you guys. >> adam tuss, live for us at the police headquarters in prince george's county. thank you. sheena parveen telling us more about what we can expect today. i think we're worried about ice. >> that 34 degrees looks pretty

>> who knew we'd be happy about 34. >> it's crazy. >> it's happened now. i walked outside this morning going, oh, good, it's not going to hurt as bad today. this is amazing. but we also have to take into account with the temperatures below freezing and the prepacipe had yesterday morning, even if it feels good to you, we have a weather alert because of the patchy ice. it could be ice. you need to remember that this morning. we're dealing with patchy dense fog around the area. driving issues for sure. look at these numbers in northern maryland. northern virginia, 24 manassas. in the district, we're a couple degrees above freezing where we don't have as many problems with the ice. but areas like quantico, clinton, fredericksburg, looking at the numbers below freezing. be careful this morning. dry on radar, though. we're going to stay dry until thursday night. we have a few days here where we're not looking at any wet weather.

look at the advivisibility. 95 and around the beltway, we have visibility a half mile or less. so some dense fog this morning. look at your planner for today. dense fog and some ice early. but by the afternoon, 47 degrees and sunny, for a high. wait until we get to the end of the week. future weather, we stay dry today. that's all ahead of a cloudy day thursday with some very late rain. that will lead us into a rainy friday. look at these temperatures, though. thursday, high of 55. 62 friday. now unfortunately that 62 is going to come with rain as we go into saturday. in the 50s and much colder. by the end of the week, and then we're watching next week. check the roads. hopefully not too bad with that fog, melissa. >> we're seeing that fog. we have a live picture right now on 395 at seminary road. you can see that sort of haze there in the air. that fog could cause issues on
