southern california tonight. entire streets and communities under a blanket of mud, still with dozens still missing. an update tonight on the search. and warmer temperatures coming our way. they will also bring some much-needed rain. doug is tracking the timing. >> news 4 at 11:00 begins with breaking news. and that breaking news tonight involving a deadly crash on a major road in prince george's county. this is branch avenue near st. barnabas road, right before the marlowe heights shopping center. >> that crashes involved two vehicles. investigators still on the scene at this hour. so is news 4's shomari stone. shomari, what have you learned? >> reporter: well, first let me tell you this is a tragedy, reminder of how dangerous it can be on the roads in our region. a man has died, a woman has serious injuries, and right now an accident reconstruction team is out here. they are processing the scene, taking photos, and trying to determine what exactly p

let's roll some video right now. prince george's county police tell us this accident happened around 8:00 tonight. a woman was driving northbound on branch avenue. police tell us a man came off a service road, tried to make a left turn onto branch avenue, and the two cars crashed. medics drove both drivers to the hospital. the man died. the woman has serious injuries. police are investigating who caused the accident. right now the southbound side of branch avenue is open by beach road. however, the northbound side is still closed and drivers are using the service road. investigators have not released the names of the man or woman. they must first notify their relatives. i asked police, do you think that drugs or alcohol was possibly involved in this crash? an investigator tells me they must first do a toxicology test to tell us if the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. we will continue to bring you updates on this story as they become available on our nbc washington app and on nbc

facebook page. live here in temple hills in prince george's county, i'm shomari stone. news 4. >> shomari, thank you. our other big story tonight, the confession on camera of a convicted killer. she's just a teenager, and so was her victim. >> venus romero iraheta plead guilty on monday. now while she awaits sentencing we're hearing her own words, what happened almost a year ago. news 4's jackie bensen is live in the newsroom with that story. jackie? >> reporter: jim, 17 years old. 17 years old, she calmly describes the torture and stabbing of a 15-year-old girl she believes played a role in the death of her boyfriend. and all of it recorded on cell phone. this still image pulled from the cell phone video of the murder shows the look of terror on the face of damaris alexandra reyes rivas, 15, as she stares into the eyes of venus iraheta. this is the recorded fairfax county poli

the 17-year-old calmly confesses to torturing and murdering the younger girl. a former romantic rival she believes played a role in the january 2017 murder of her boyfriend, christian sosa rivas, a gang member. >> then what did you do? >> i killed her. >> how did you kill her? >> with a knife. >> what did you do with the knife? >> [ speaking spanish ]. >> i don't remember how many times i stabbed her in the stomach. >> was it a lot? >> like 13. >> she told detectives at the direction of one of the gang members present before stabbing her she did something grotesque. >> [ speaking spanish ]. >> i cut her tattoo off. >> reporter: news 4 was at the home of iraheta's mother last january when she returned home

her mother had reported her missing. she was arrested moments later, and a short time after that she was making a statement to homicide detectives. >> does it bother you? what happened. do you think about it? sometimes? >> reporter: the confessed killer, just 17, will be sentenced in may. she faces a maximum of life in prison plus 20 years. back to you. leon harris here at the live desk. we've learned the death toll has jumped to 17 in those destructive mudslides in southern california. you're looking now at some new video that we've just gotten in. searchers pulled two more bodies out of an area in santa barbara county. 17 people remain missing tonight. hundreds of firefighters making their way through that muck and

wreckage. three people were rescued today. authorities tell us they've searched about 75% of the devastated area. meanwhile, many families say they don't know if their loved ones are alive. >> hundreds of people have been rescued and evacuated. many of them having to be hoisted out of the area. >> i don't know how far she could have been swept. i don't know. >> i don't know where my parents are. it's a horrific feeling. >> just unimaginable heartbreak there. some people unaccounted for have been found safe. at last check the mudslides wiped out about 100 homes. hundreds more, though, were damaged. the painful search for the missing continues. and we will continue to keep you posted on what we learned from there. jim, doreen, back to you. >> all right, leon, thank you. now to our weather. and some much-needed rain here coming our way before the weekend. >> doug's here with a look at how soon it moves in. doug? >> yeah, guys,

way. but first we're going to see the nice warm temperatures. you can see on the maps it wasn't too far away from us earlier today. today a temperature just at or a little below average, 43 degrees high temperature d.c. but look down to the southwest. 67 charleston, west virginia. 69 in toward kentucky. that warmer air trying to move our way. right now look at these numbers, still very mild. we haven't gone down much at all. 39 right now in rockville. 37. could see some areas of fog this evening. that's something you may want to watch out for maybe early tomorrow morning. here's the rain that's making its way through the region. most likely by tomorrow night into the day on friday, friday morning's rush could be a problem, and then the back side of this comes through. and the weekend, everything changes again. much more on that in about ten minutes. >> all right, doug, thank you. students and teachers at george washington middle school in alexandria may have until next week off. we told you last night about a burst pipe at the school. all that water soaked an electrical panel which then had to be turned off. it also took

system. classes can't resume until heat and power are restored and the fire marshal clears the school to reopen. new at 11:00, doctors expect congressman steve scalise to remain in the hospital for several days as he recovers from new surgery. the house majority whip had a planned follow-up procedure at medstar washington hospital center today. the hospital says the surgery went well and scalise is resting comfortably. scalise was nearly killed during the congressional baseball practice shooting in alexandria last june. a bullet to the hip shattered bones and damaged his internal organs. before the surgery he said he would return to work in the coming weeks. virginia governor terry mcauliffe says he is leaving the commonwealth more just, more eke sxl more prosperous for everyone after four years as governor. the democrat gave his final state of the commonwealth address tonight to the general assembly. he highlighted changes in the criminal justice system

for more than 173,000 virginians the peak of his term as governor. the low point, the violence in charlottesville last fall. governor mcauliffe says the state has a solid new economy to build from but that's a point that republicans dispute. >> virginia's strong revenue picture is a clear sign of a growing economy and the budgets that i have presented to you builds upon that momentum. >> with an eye on higher office and a focus on his party's base, he has effectively denied opportunities and placed all of virginia at a competitive disadvantage. >> governor mcauliffe leaves office announcing a deal today to extend the i-95 hot lanes ten miles farther south to fredericksburg. democrat ralph northam will be sworn into office on saturday. voters in maryland will choose a governor this year, and it's still early but one democratic candidate may be separating himself from the pack already.

rushiern baker is topping the field in the democratic primary. the baltimore sun is reporting that baker is getting 24% support followed by baltimore county executive kevin camnets and former naacp president ben jealous with 14%. that poll was conducted by gonzalez research and marketing strategies. we went to annapolis for thear first day of the legislative session today and asked governor larry hogan about his re-election race. >> i won't even know who my opponent is for almost seven months. so i'm just going to stay focused on maryland for now and then we'll have plenty of time for that later. >> governor hogan says a priority for him is more transparency in government, including live cameras covering the general assembly. president trump campaigned on a promise to crack down on undocumented workers. and today i.c.e. agents carried out that promise. they raided 98 7-eleven stores here and across the country. but only made 21

states including maryland. i.c.e.'s acting director did not say why they targeted 7-eleven stores, but the agency tweeted out this quote, saying in part, "businesses that hire illegal workers are a pull factor for illegal immigration and we are working hard to remove this magnet." 7-eleven responded this evening, saying it takes compliance with immigration laws seriously and has terminated the franchise agreement of franchises convicted of violating these laws. president trump did not hold back today after a judge temporary temporari temporarily blocked his attempt to end the daca program that protects immigrants who came to this country as children. today while hosting the president of norway he said again that any deal on daca will have to include funding for his promised border wall. >> we need the wall for security. we need th w

67b8g. the d.c. council voted unanimously tonight to rename a street by the russian embassy after a famous opponent of vladimir putin. it's the portion of wisconsin avenue right in front of the embassy. it would be called boris nemtsov plaza. the council calls this an emergency renaming and says it will remain in place until permanent legislation is passed. nemtsov was killed two years ago just outside the kremlin hours after calling for marches to be held in opposition to russia's military involvement in ukraine. the kremlin has denied in connection to nemtsov's assassination. days after the golden globe awards stars in hollywood are still celebrating the "time's up" movement against gender inequality and sexual misconduct. now questions over an alleged pay gap involving two a-list actors. "usa today" reporting a major

winchester was 28 last hour, now up to 32. 37 right now in manassas. 37 in huntingtown. we'll see most areas drop into the upper 30s. the farther we go down, though, the more chances we have for? fog. that's something to think about. no rain. i don't think we'll see any rain tonight. but we do have a chance of rain tomorrow. look what's happening. this is a classic xham pl of cold air damming where the cold air lines aup long the mountains and off to the east. 43 d.c., 44 in philly. look at the warm air really trying to push up. 60 in morgantown, 46 in pittsburgh. just amazing. that warmer air will make its way our way. it's been on the cold side with these roller coaster temperatures. we were at the bottom and we were staying there. now we're starting to see that warmer air push in. this jet stream is the same one that brought that storm in across parts of california. now bringing us the storm and bringing us some very warm air associated with it too. but the cold air will come right back. that warm air, it's not sticking around long at all. and really, we've got two days of it. here's to

cloud cover around the area. notice by 5:00 starting to see? rain in our southwest zones. by 8:00 we've got some rain back toward the blue ridge. i do think we're going to get through the rush without much of a problem but we could see a few problems toward the end of the rush. in the overnight thursday night here's 11:00, not much going on, but watch this. boom. here comes a lot of rain. in here by 6:00, 7:00, 8:00 early friday morning. that's going to coincide with the early morning rush. then around 1:00 in the afternoon really around noon we're going to get a little bit of a break. i don't think we'll see any sun. if we do it's going to feel great out there. we're going to get some wind. temperatures will get into the mid 60s. we're dry most of the day and then the rain moves back in overnight friday night. so you'll need the umbrella as you step out to dinner. you won't need the coats, though, on friday but you'll need them quickly. much warmer temperatures on friday. rain early and then again late. put away the coats but not for long. put them in the closet but not deep in the closet because you need them by
