chris? >> all right, thank you very much, chuck. we begin with a developing story. reaction has been fast and furious for president trump's explosive and what sources say expletive-filled comments about immigrants. the white house is not directly disputing the language used in the oval office. democratic aide confirmed those original comments to nbc news while discussing immigrants from haiti and african countries. president trump said quote, why are we having all these people from expletive countries come here. he also said "why do we need more haitians? take them out." someone else responded by saying, because if you do it will be obvious why. what's not clear is who was in the room who said that. a reporter who spoke with haiti's ambassador to the u.s. was on msnbc. here's what she had to say.

>> the haitian government has actually formally summoned a u.s. official to come before the haitian government to explain what president trump meant by these comments. >> as you can imagine, reactions have been coming in from both sides of the aisle. a lot of the comments have been condemnations of what was said. in a white house statement, it says that president trump supports immigration policies and welcomed those who can contribute to our society. the president's comments are getting a lot of coverage on a lot of newsg cnn. don lemon and anderson cooper both had strong reaction when they opened the show, calling president trump a "racist." went on to say that the remarks made by the commander in chief were disgusting. anderson cooper echoed the similar comments and became choked up on the air as we defended haiti and its strong people. i should say down in haiti within hours

with anderson coop earnd i can say covering that story, you don't come out of that without an emotional and personal response when something is said about the people there. i'll have more about that in about 4:45. first, we want to get you to some breaking news. a former white house adviser, steve bannon is set to testify before the house intelligence committee next week. sources tell nbc news it will happenñkó next tuesday. bannon ran the trump campaign during its final months and then served as the president's top adviser until getting fired last august. last week the new book, "fire and fury" quotedél bannon, referring to a meeting between russians and donald trump jr. as treasonness. later, he left his job at breitbart news. tracie potts will be live on capitol hill to break it down for us. that's coming up later in the newscast. now to a developing story here out of prince george's couy.

someone was killed on brach avenue near temple hill. an suv hit a pedestrian around 6:00 last night. the woman died at the hospital. police say the driver of the suv that hit her did stay there on the scene. we now know the name of the man killed on branch avenue a couple blocks away. shawn sims died at the hospital after his vehicle collided with another near st. barnabas road. the woman behind the wheel of the second car was critically injured also. we're getting a first look at a suspect in a double stabbing at a high school. edwin martinez, he's 19 years old, charged with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of assault and a weapons charge. police tell us the stabbings stem from an argument between the suspect and victims over a female student. the victims are both in stable condition in a hospital with what

nonlife-threatening injuries. this morning, rescue crews in california are hoping for miracles as they search for survivors of the deadly mudslide. the search is becoming more desperate by the minute. at least 17 people, some as young as 3 years old and some as old as 89. one woman had to be carried out of her home by firefighters when the mud poured in. >> we had no idea what a flash flood was until i saw this tore rid raging river with cars and rocks. >> 65 homes have been destroyed. between 400 to 500 damaged the 101 freeway remains shut down until next monday. today, students can go back to george washington middle school in alexandria. it was shut down because of a water pipe that burst. the pipe soaked an electrical grid and cut off the power, water and

a recent report on that deadly shooting at sandy hook elementary school. connecticut state police are breaking down the response by the new town police department. a man walked in and killed first graders and educators and then turned the gun on himself. prosecutors issued a report about five years ago and it revealed it took six minutes before a newtown police officer arrived on the scene and entered the school. president trump is scheduled to have a physical exam today. we'll see if dr. ronnie jackson at walter reed hospital. this will be his first head to toe checkup since he's taken office. the white house said the doctor will release a brief statement and hold a news conference sometime next week. a snowstorm in japan trapped more than 400 people on a train. the snow was so thick, the whooels whee wheels on the train couldn'
