expletive countries here." he also added, why do we need more haitians. take them out. someone responded, because if you do, it will be obvious why. it's not clear who made that comment. >> this marks eight years since that devastating earthquake. a 7.0 magnitude earthquake killed hundreds of thousands of haitians and much of that island is still recovering. chris lawrence was there in the weeks after reporting on that earthquake. he's going to share his perspective with us coming up. we'll check in with tracie potts on capitol hill. we're going to check in with darcy spencer outside of the haitian embassy this morning with reaction. darcy, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the haitian ambassador calling the president's comments regrettable and based on cliches and stereotypes. the comments are being condemned on both sides of the aisle, republicans and democrats. virginia senator tim kaine said all

to a meeting between russians 2016 campaign as treasonness. days later, bannon left his job at breitbart news. deadly mudslides in california. rescue crews are hoping for miracles as they search for survivors. the search is becoming more desperate bit second. at least 17 people have been killed from ages 3 to 89. more than 40 others are still missing and in all,t( 65 homes have been destroyed while nearly 450 are damaged. we now know the name of the man killed wednesday night on branch avenue in the temple hills area. police say shawn sims died at the hospital after his car collided with another vehicle near st. barnabas road. the woman behind the wheel of the second car was critically injured.

after an argument between two high school students and ended with a stabbing. >> prince george's county students worry for their safety now. megan mcgrath is live at central high school this morning where the incident took place. megan, what's the reaction from the school and what's going to happen today? >> reporter: well, the kids are going to be returning to classes here and we're going to keep an eye on things to see if there's any extra security. but some pretty tense moments yesterday after the stabbing occurred. it happened shortly after the students arrived here at central high school. two students stabbed. they're going to be okay. but they are still recovering from those injuries. a lot of shaken parents and shaken students here at the school. police have arrested edwin martinez. he is a 19-year-old junior here at central high school. he's been charged with two counts of attempted murder, assault and a weapons charge. police say that it all began with an argument yesterday

and stabbed two freshmen. the school is on lockdown for a time. students say that they would like to see more security here on a daily basis. >> the school doesn't really take proper precaution of what happens in the school and what's being brought into the school. it's a school thing to get it under control. >> reporter: worried parents came here to the school trying to get information about what happened and about their children. just making sure that their kids were okay. they did not receive any texts or e-mails about what was going on. many are very upset about that. coming up later in the show, i'm going to have more on what the school system says about why they didn't send out any e-mails or text alerts and we'll hear from parents themselves. back to you. megan, thank you. it's 5:08 now. the prince george's county school qceo, kevin maxwell, wil appear before the prince george's house delegation in

here at the live desk, we're getting new video out of japan where a snowstorm trapped more than 400 people on a train. that snow was so thick, the wheels on the train couldn't turn. it was stuck in place for 15 hours. now, the cars did have heat and electricity, but only one working bathroom. apparently, it was too dangerous to evacuate everyone because it's dark outside for a lot of that time and the snow on the tracks was that deep. fortunately, no one was seriously hurt. eun, back to you. >> chris, thank you. it's 5:13. the deadly smoke incident at l'enfant plaza -- a

station. many of the lawsuits have been dismissed. but the glover family filed azv $50 million lawsuit. the next hearing for that case is scheduled for march. if there is a trial, it could begin late next year. happening today, a new report on the deadly 2012 sandy hook elementary school shooting. connecticut state police are breaking down the response by the newtown police department. in december of 2012, a gunman killed 20 first grade children and six educators inside that school. the gunman then killed himself. the prosecutor's report revealed it took six minutes for a newtown police officer to arrive on the scene there and enter the school. happening today, class will be in session today after burst pipes shut down george washington middle school in alexandria for three days. the burst pipes soaked an electrical grid and cut off power, water and the fire alarm system. after repairs, the fire marshal has given the school the okay to bring kids back to the building. very short sch

also prince george's county, through much of maryland really and northern virginia. we have spotty light showers. more rain to our south. that's pretty much heading straight north. we'll see more waves of rain and as we look off to our west. a weather pattern unsettled. if you look a little farther to our west, we have snow and ice here. there's that colder air. it's waiting to move into our area and there is a small chance we could see that briefly through the area. mainly far west of the district. it's 60 degrees right now with cloudy skies and the rain. look at these temperatures around 60 degrees. it's not going to be a cold rainy day. it's going to be a mild, rainy day. 8:00, still scattered showers lunchtime. spotty showers around through the afternoon. maybe a bit of a break. then more showers return tonight. there you see that cold air i showed you. some of that could try to inch into part of the area. again, if you're farther north and west, you canxd see that briefly very early tomorrow. then we clear out and the

meteorologist chuck bell is outside. chuck, it's balmy out there? >> no jacket required today but i'm wearing a suit coat. temperatures way above average. nearly 30 degrees above average. that's how far out of whack things are this morning. there's a check of radar. raindrops are greeting you first thing this morning. there's a 100% chance of more rain coming our way today. those are winter storm warnings in bright pink off to the west. that is the cold air that's coming here. for snow lovers, i got bad news. it looks like the cold air, below freezing, doesn't get here until after most, if not all, of the moisture is gone. doesn't look like much of a snow threat for tomorrow. i couldn't rule out a passing snow shower or two. how can we be talking about snow? nearly 60 degrees today. planning out the day, mid to upper 60s. mild and off and on showers. sheena has more details on how fahe

condition with what appear to be nonlife-threatening injuries. the driver accused of hiting a morgan state university student will be in court today. in december of 2015, a man was traveling south on 202 when he sped across the centery5ç line hitting another person's car. he was ejected from the car and later died from injuries. he faces charges, including motor vehicle manslaughter. a local youth leader and son of a mega church pastor in prince william county is sentenced to five months in jail. jar done baird is convicted of exposing himself. prosecutors say baird misused his position as a church youth pastor, but his lack of any prior record was a factor in his sentence. 355 bridge in frederick county, maryland is open to drivers now. the bridge that crosses over the mony

dump truck crash caused significant structural damage. crews finished repairs nearly a month ahead of schedule. the bridge reopened yesterday before the evening rush hour. money for time. metro's new credit program is a go. it's received tentative approval. if your train is late 15 minutes or more during rush hour, you will receive a credit for that trip on your smart trip card. the full board will vote on the plan in two weeks. it could take effect by the end of the month. lot of riders looking forward to that. we'll see how many are paid. a 63-year-old former chef is going back to school at georgetown university. >> she's a freshman living on campus and walkingua the same ph as the men who sold her family as slaves. her journey started after georgetown officially acknowledged, apologized for selling slaves to raise money

here at the live desk, we're following breaking news in northeast d.c. where thousands of people will be waking up this  the lights won't come on. pepco says a tripped speeder is causing a power outage in that part of the district. we're talking about queens chapel, fort totten, south dakota avenue and new hampshire avenue. affecting well over 2,000 people. the power should be back on between 7:00 and 9:00 this morning. again, that's after a lot of families have gotten up, tried to get the kids ready for school. this video out of burbank, california, captures the terrifying moment a car was carried away in a flash flood this week. >> this morning, we're hearing from the driver. his girlfriend was in the car at the time and was screaming with

16 before the hour. >> prince george's county students -- they're worried for their safety. megan mcgrath is at the high school where it took place. megan, what happened here? >> reporter: this unfold ld shortly after the kids arrived at school yesterday morning. the two students who were stabbed will be okay. they're still recovering from their injuries. pretty tense moments there

arrest. they've arrested edwin aguilar martinez. he's a 19-year-oldjf junior her at central high school and he's been charged with two counts of assault and a weapons charge. police say that all of this began to unfold yesterday morning with an argument about a girl. martinez, they say, pulled a knife and stabbed the two freshmen students. pretty tense moments as this began to unfoamed. the school on lockdown for a time. worried parents came to central high school to get information about their kids, wanted to know if they were okay. they never got any texts from the school system telling them what was going on or providing updates. they think that was wrong. >> obviously, there's no longer a threat because the person was apprehended. communicate with the parents by way of text message, e-mail, something. let us know something.

exam today. it's expected to take several hours over at walter reed. we're told there will be a brief summary afterwards and then something more detailed next week. tracie, we've been talking about this all morning. the president's comments on haiti and other african countries. really causing outrage here. can we expect to hear from more lawmakers? >> we could hear more reaction about the expletive he used. and more importantly about the words, what many think the word means, delineating between countries with large brown populations as haiti and africa and el salvador versus european countries like norway. that is the distinction the president reportedly made. what does that mean about the types of immigrants he wants in the country and what does it mean about these views being infused into policy. those are the types of discussions that we're hearing and could hear a lot more about today. >> indeed.

tracie, thank you. of course, we're working with you to cover all angles of the story. it's not going away any time soon. >> chris lawrence was in haiti covering the earthquake there eight years ago. we look at what's happened there, we see the images, we hear the comments from the president. what are your impression sns what strikes you? >> boy oh, boy, hard to know where to start. i know what i saw when we got down there. it was just devastation doesn't really do it justice. the fact that the smell from those bodies and the families that were living there with their loved ones, i mean, i saw people's knuckles bleeding as they were digging through this stone and concrete trying to dig people out that of rubble. i saw haitian doctors

injured in that earthquake. i saw people desperate for food and water. it could have gotten really ugly, it should have gotten really ugly by all accounts. the desperation there was incredible. what i saw was people just trying to make the best of an awful, awful situation anyway they could. >> of course, there was the aftermath event. the earthquake and then all the years to try to rebuild this country that was already suffering with so many losses. >> yeah. i mean, i know just some of the things you saw down there, the bodies at one point were piled so high, they brought in a dump truck. a dump truck to move them out. we found it inhumane, but it was a public health hazard to those who survived. at one point, we were going on a story and traveling around in a
