earthquakes. hundreds of thousands of people were killed that day. the anniversary is marked with bipartisan reaction to the president's comments about haiti. we are staying on top of breaking news out of california this morning as well. chris lawrence at the live desk with that. chris? >> aaron, i was just looking at this. rescue crews in california are hoping right now for miracles as they search for survivors of the deadly mudslides. the search is becoming more desperate by the second. at least 17 people have been killed. some as young as 3 years old and some as old as 89. more than 40 others are still missing. in all, about 65 homes have been destroyed. between 400 and 500 damaged by this incredible trail of destruction. chris, thank you. now to a developing story out of prince george's county. someone was killed on a stretch of branav

row. an suv struck a pedestrian near iverson street around 6:00 last night. police say the driver of the suv remained on the scene. we now know the name of the man killed on wednesday night on branch avenue just a couple of blocks away. shawn sims died at the hospital after his car collided with another vehicle near st. barnabas road. the woman behind the wheel of thet-x second car was also critically injured. the deadly smoke incident at l'enfant plaza was exactly three years ago today. carol glover was killed and many sickened when a train stopped in the tunnel by the station. the victim's family filed a $50 million lawsuit. the next hearing for that case is scheduled for march. if there is a trial, it could begin late next year. it's 6:06. new this morning, we're getting our first look at the suspect in a double stabbing at strat high school in prorjts county. edwin

charged with two counts of attempted murder. it stems from an argument between the suspects and victims over a female student. the victims are both in stable condition at the hospital with what appear to be nonlife-threatening injuries. today, students can return to george washington middle school in alexandria. the school was shut down for three days because of a burst water pipe. the pipe soaked an electrical grid and cut off power, water and the fire alarm system. after the repairs, the school says the fire marshal has given them the okay to bring the kids back into the building. breaking news right now. an update on power outages affecting thousands of homes in the district. chris lawrence at the live desk. >> i've got an update for you. we talked about this affected 2100 people. that's gone up a lot. now affecting well over 3,600 people in northeast d.c. a lot waking up this morning wondering why the lights won't come on. pepco says

upper marlboro is seeing the moderate rain. pretty steady light rainfall. the windshield wipers are on this morning. even down 95. you notice more lane from the south. we expect that ran to continue. a break between the next band off to the west. we'll see breaks in the rain later on today. but it's really that cold air this weekend that we're also talking about. look at the edge of this wet weather. it's actually in the form of snow and maybe even freezing rain. there's colder air behind tmt it's really trying to rush in here. that's why we're seeing the change in precip type. some of it could get in the area early tomorrow. but briefly. temperatures around 60 degrees. future weather through 9:00 a.m., scattered showers around lunchtime. maybe a few scattered showers as well. little bit of a break this afternoon. but still rain in the forecast. 9:00 p.m., still looking at the rain. overnight as well. and there's where i talked about briefly north and west, we could see precip, maybe freezing rain

a suspect is in custody after an argument between two high school students ended with a stabbing. >> news 4's megan mcgrath is live at central high school with a breakdown of what happened. megan, good morning. >> reporter: well, good morning. things getting back to normal here at central high. classes resumed yesterday and the two students who were stabbed are going to be okay. they're recovering from their injuries but not life-threatening. they are going to be okay. police have made an arrest. they have arrest fd edwin martinez. he is a 19-year-old junior here at central high school. he's been charged with two counts of attempted murder, assault, as well as a weapons charge. now, police say that all of this began with an argument about a girl yesterday morning. martinez, they say, pulled a knife and stabbed two freshmen. school was on lockdown for a time and some pretty tense moments here as all of this unfolded. worried parents came to the school to get information about

here at the live desk. breaking news in northeast d.c. where thousands of people are waking up this morning wondering why the lights won't come on. pepco now reporting about more than 3600 customers don't have power. we're talking about the queens chapel, fort totten, lamond, riggs, manor park, north michigan park. university heights neighborhoods. there was a tripped feeder to blame for the power outage. they'll have the power back on sometime between 7:00 a.m. and maybe as late as 11:00 this morning. now we're hearing also dominion power reporting a power outage in northern virginia. this one impacting nearly 5,000 customers. that's spread out all over arlington, alexandria, fairfax. we're working to learn more about the outages. before it comes back on, a
