cory stewart who won the republican sene nomination, faces virginia senator tim kaine november. the establishment republican picked up a little speed in recent weeks. joining us to talk politics nohern virginia bureau chief juli harry and welcome to tom a,sherwood. jut was a dramatic win for stewart. things went back and forth ony tuesnight, and it was a close race. >> it was a narrow win. this is great news for coryho stewart has been after a chance to seek statewide office for som time. great news for supporters of president trump of which he is one, and cory stewart has a very loyal base of people, they tend to be the fervent, pro-trump people. but this is bad news for the rest of t virginia republican

party because he is a very difficult candidate to have at the top of the ticket now because he has b n so controversial, because he alienates so many independent voters and female voters, it is going to be a rough going. some virginia republicans were saying even on tuesday night you just hded the senat race to tim kaine. cory stewart sees it differently. he thinks t president's popularity is growing, that that's going to lift his campaign andt will become a competitive race and then the money will startlowing to h campaign. right now, the national senate republicans, no plans to focus on this race. >> people underestimate cory stewart. he is trump support, heoves saying that. he says ed gilleie lost last year because he wasn't sufficiently, conservati trump like. he said people will not vote for

you. trump vots are aroup of voters that will vote for you if ey believe you're into trump. no question cory stewart is all into trump. as you know in virginia sometimes it used to be a publican state, then it went purple lately. and then democratic blue. >> i think it is turning blue. few things about cory stewart, he needs to look at the numbers the oth night. winning vote total was lower than it was when he was nipping ed gillespie's heels. while he has support, fewer came out to cast ballots for him. but o thing he can take heart in,e did win in the close suburbs. creeping out toan spotsy, it hange.d to >> fairfax? >> loudoun

but when it comes to general election and turnout is much higher and statewide winner has to win a lot voters in those areas. one other really quick factor, some republicans surmise that a lot of republicans might have cast democratic ballots the other day in their particular area, may have been more interested in that. you could have had people crossing over. >> cory stewart has two personalities. county executives say he fused on county business and not a right wing politician. butng is he g to be able to build around the state when people get to know him. tim kaine, vice presidential candidate, clinton won the sta in 2016, he doesn't have a lot of negatives. and has millions in the bank.

jennifer wexton beat three women for a chance to challenge comestock. she promised positive, progressive agenda. compare with co >> i think one of the enormous issues is e iss of gun safety, gun violence. you have barbara comstock strongly supported by the nra, and jennifer wexton pushed forward legislation to enact contls on guns. those two are out after that suburban female vote. it is annterestingistrict. stretches from mclane to wincster. you g from virginia suburbs where people are looking for

restriction of guns. >> and comstoc is onef the most vulnerable. >> she is, in great part because her district is turning blue.ll y clinton won her district. that's why she has her work cut out forha her. a tremendous reputation for constituent service, but she has lso been criticized for not meeting an open forum more frequently. she did give a boost to her re-election bid over the winter when she became a leading voice on capitol hill o thessue of sexual harassment. that's going to with women voters. >> women ters, big wave of women voters in 2017. >> we are going toalk about it after the break. be right back.

following a national trend, moreomen than ever running for office in virginia. seven are running for seats in congress and every democratic primary a woman was on the ballot, a woman won the mination. this not only continues a national trend, it conti wave we saw in the general assembly. >> definitely in november saw a wave of women and i was at jennif wexton's victory party, lawmakers were talking about it, it was a mini wave. six of sevenre democratic challenges. saw female democratic challenger do well in november. >> virginia is unique, has off year elections. democrats have statewide elections next year.

about maryland. the r crowded gubernatorie is less crowded. valerie urban dropped her bid, unable to get her name added to the ballot following the death of running mate. she's throwing support behind baker. tom, she facedn up hill battle trying to get her name added and getting that reprinted. what effect will her dropping out have on theace? >> it is going to be hard to tell. it is important because all the statewide polling shows they're neck and neck. for her to drop out, say she's foan baker effect the vote 1 or 2%. she was polling 5 or 6. it could have impact. just don't know. the last ten days of the election is going to be remarkable as they try to ot

consolidate. 40% of voters are undecided. >> many might have expected her to endorse ben because he is more progressive. >> she worked with the working families party and she was running that becau she is progressive. he got the endorsement last year of that party. he was very upset when she got on theieutenant governor ticket. they had a tiff. she accused him of trying to keep her out of state politics, he was tryin to protect his endorsement. there's personal animosity, seeing it play o. the race between sherman baker and bernke zealous with other candidates with money and time to get known with voters. >> and as you both know, there's a bill hill to climb to beat larry hilton in november, whoever wins.

>> the hogan gets 7% approval rating. match him against the democrats, dropped into the 50s. but he is one of the most popular governors. he managed to buffer himself from some of the stuff around president trump. and his people think he has done a good job of he is already putting ads up.s he ready to roll. >> any comparison between what's happening inha virginia ands happening in the state of maryland? >> i have been talking about it. h think b states are very interesting right now for two reasons. in both places you have governors that have really used bipartisanship to move things forward. we a seeing so many terrible things about how nothing works on capitol hill. in virginia and maryland, we're seeing good examples of people working across party lines.
