of thundr. amelia draoins us now from the storm center. is it over yet amelia? >> the good news is thunderstorms are over and they brought torrential downpours to parts othe area. some of us saw over an inch of rain including here in you can see there are about 60 miles south of the district down around parts of the nourrthern neck. here's a loop for the last six hours as these storms developd up aro the mason dixon line and then dropped south into the hearea. again, torm threat is over for tonight, but we'll still have some scattered showers out there. some very light showers around until about midnight. otherwise some peaks of sunshine and we've just jumped back up to 83 degrees. storms at least pulled us into the 7s. they do nothing for the humidity. it is still going to be extremely mgy out there. by 11:00 p.m. that 79 feels more like 85, pat, when you facto in

the mugginess. i'm going to have more on themi ty levels coming up around 5:25. the other big story we're following this evening, the battle at the border over children being sep from their families. >> new audio unverified by nbc news from inside one of the detention centers is fueling more out raining this a border patrol agent appearing to mock the children. the audio first obtained by p publico and these images provided by the government are our only real glance at what's going on in tome ofse border facilities. the trump administration has pushed back against any notion that the children are being president's nd the trying to lay blame on democrats. a suggestion they areoundly

rejecting. >> we want a great untry. we want a country with heart. but when peopleome up, they have to know they can't get in. otherwise, it's never going to stop. >> we should be abl to agree that we will not leave kids in internment camps. and outf public view. what country is that? >> joining us now is nbc's chief white house correspondent hallie jackson. this isecoming of course contentious issue for this administration, but earlier today the president ripped on this iue for about 20 minutes sounding almost like he was back at aally at the start of his campaign. >> it was like a barn burner speech, sate of the gt hits we've heard from then candidate trump, now president trump. you're right about that. let me make two points if you want to summarize the administration's position, if where the summarize
5:03 pm
president is on what has become the dominant story in the news over the last 72 hours or so it is tse two words. dug in. the president is not backing down from this. his top administration officials are not backing down. that includes for example his top congressional liaison who toll me earlier the president is not essentially going to back away from this policy. here arehe facts. the president could, in fact, end this separation of kids and their families tonight in five minutes right now if he wanted ri. and thats me to the second point which is that while the white house and the president as you said are putting the blame squarely on democrat they've got to change the law. again, there is notqu law that es families to be separated from kids when these adults illegly cross the border. that is because of a trump administration policy that was acted about six weeks ago called zero tolerance which requires 100% criminal prosecution. it removes the discretion in
5:04 pm
order to go after adults to break the law by crossing into e country illegally. by doing so the trump administration is essentially allowing the separation, forcing the separation of these kids from their parents. that's the one piece of the other piece is it's not just democrats. not just democrats who are angry about this. republicans are too. in a way that we haven't seen for a long te on capitol hill. i've covered every day of this trump administration. you have people, allies of the president, like senator orrin hatch, people who are on the same side. these are not jeff flakes, republicans who have railed against the president and spoken out against him and who are political opponents of the president even though they're in the same party. aese areies of donald trump who are saying you've got to stop this, this cannot go on. what y have now is congress looking at legislative solutions. they're trying to aigure out way to fix this with a lawpa ing some kind of a bill possibly as soon as this week. congress doesn't have to do this because the president could change it, but congress can in
5:05 pm
ct try to create some new law, pass a bill that would stop immefately this separation kids from families. that is what we'reg watch tonight. in about ten minutes or so you're going to see a lot of activityse the president will be heading down pennsylvania avenue and going to the hill to g b aefing on all of this, to talk with republican members on immigration issues an we'll be monitoring that as it happen zb -- know you will.
