mark segraves news 4. >> they've already identified 18 people who fit the pro fiefile f being at high risk. they've been connected with social services and job training too. ose interrupters who are being trained to intervene in neighborhood scuffles will start hitting the streets this weekend. trouble at the trash bin. our eorts to go green are seeing red. millions of americans recycle, especially in orea. maryland, 61% of the trash in prince george's and montgomery county is recyclea in virgi fairfax county recycles about half of its trash. loudon and prince william counties don't recycle as, mu ut still they are beat the state mandated 25%. joining us, jo lingent to explain what the problem is.

monday we put our recycling trash and our recyclables out today and think it's going to the recycling center and it's all being good for the planet. what's changed? >> reporter: there's an increasing change because of policy all the way over in mainland china. thehinese government last year instituted a new anti-pollution policy which is raising the standards of the recycling process. you may not know this, but actually china is known for taking almost all of the world's recycling and making it into new stuff for you to reuse. now because of these new policies, they won't be doing that and so million t ofs of garbage and trash are now kind of in limbo here. so what we've been finding in our reporting across the country is that we've gone into recycling centers and found some of these recycling centers who used to ship all their recycling to china are no longer able to do so and china is refusing those shipments. as a result, some of that

recycling ends up going to the ndfill or ends up going to the dump. what we're going to tell you more about tonight this is going to cost you when it comes to your recycling bill and what it means. ouu work so hard to recycle as you said andant to make sure you're doing right by the planet. soo we'll look so we'll look at all the different consequences. 't>> i'm curious why we c repurpose a lot of that mrs. tick here? >> recycling is a very labor intensive operation and it requires a lot of space land wise itequires at least in china it was very cheap to do so because their pollution laws used to be much more lax. a lot is being diverted to india and southeast asia. the shipping routes take longer and are more expensive and could push the recycling bill up. if you don't reprocess some kind of recycling fast enough in the case of mixed paper, you
