to make his first court appearance. jarrod ramos expected to appear before a judge a short time from now. justin finch is in apap lnnapol with what we knownow. >> good morning. just a short time ago. the judge took to the bench and announced that jarrod ramos would be last on the morning r bailiew list. that eight other people will be before him. once they're processed, and after a short recess, he have his turn. i can tell you the courtroom is very full at this time. mostly media from across the region and beyon waiting to see jarrodamos appear before a judge via closed circuit television. >> reporter: police identied -year-old jarrod ramos as the shooter involved in the "capital gazette" newsroom attack. five employees were killed. two more were injud, the annapolis community was left shaken. >> it's ridiculous.

it's scary, you know? you can't even go to the movie theater a a not worryut getting shot. the schools. it's crazy. >> reporter: chopper 4 was overhead as the newspaper's building housed with other offices was evacuated. those inside leaving withds h up moments after ramos reportedly used a long gun f to ope in the newsroom yesterday afternoon. as for what set off the deadly attack, courten doc point to an ongoing dispute withhe "capital gazette." ramos sued citing defamationhe afteraper published an article details claiming ramos harassing a woman online. courts ruled in favor of the paper. this morning we also now have our hands on charging documents from the court detailing some details we did not know before, such as jarrod ramos was found trying to hide under a desk after the shooting yesterday and

also that surveillance video inside the building hped authorities positively identify him as the shooter in the case. that's the latest out here live. back to you. >> thank you very much. this morning a capital gazette intern spoke to "the today show." he recounted the horrifying experience inside the newsroom as the shooting went on. >> initially thought it was reworks. i heard a pop and i turned and looked over my shoulder towards the front of the room, towards the entrance and i saw faces that looked concernecobut i dn't see any shooter or anything. i saw that the glass doors that opened up into our office were blown out. and then i heard a second pop, and after that, i still wasn't positive what was going on, but i was afraid enough to grab my keys, and i ran towards the bafi exit of the . >> a tweet from messenr's account went viral minutes after shots rang out. said his colleague sent the tweet after texting a few family

a california mother has lost a desperate fight to keep her daughter alive. a coroner declared the girl brain dead when she was 13. that was back in 2013. her brain damage was caused by a complication during surgery to remove her tonsil but her mother said her christian beliefs compelled her to fight for her daughter's continued care. she moved her daughter to new jersey, that's where patients in similar vegetative state are accommodated. family members say she died last week after surgery. she was 18 yea old. >> thank you. love that. >> tiger.

with that, i'll turn it over to the chief.te >> good oon, ladies and gentlemen, i'm sorry to see you here today. bear with me as i take my i want to start today by offering sincere condolences of the anne arundel county police department to the "capital gazee" staff. much like police, local newspapers bece a family, and their family sfered tragedy yesterday. most of the folks that work at the "capital gazette" work with us daily, weekly. and we know them. it's not only a loss for them, i want them to know that. it's a loss for the anne arcodel ty police department and city it's a loss for the of annapolis and anne arundel county. utr hearts go to them. we'll think of them as we move

forward. we wish them the best as they try to deal withhe grief. i have to thank a bunch of people. i'll ask you to bear with me on this. there were 300 law enforcement officers on that scene yesterday. 300 law enforcement officers from annapolis police department, t maryland state police, howard county police department maryland transportation authority police, department ofd -- maryl department of natural resources police, annapolis fire and bomb squad, prince george's county police department, montgomery county, maryland started to send us up. bwi's fire and rescue services came. nsa place camolice came. the fbi was ant help in times of trouble. the bureau of alcohol, tobacco

and firearms gave us a large amount of help. nsa came to ithelp. states secret service came to help. and the postal inspectors came to help. whether they were helping us direct traffic, whether they were bringing water to cops dehydrated of helped us go in that building and save lives, every cop from all thoseagenciee peoples lives yesterday. i thank them from the bottom of my heart from the anne arundel county police department. i would like tohank our community. one of the beautiful things about wearing a badge and a patch ine aundel county is we know how our community feels about us. ywe heard the last 24 hours. as always we thank you for that support and love. the business community is solutely at front a center of that larger community. we have had so manyhongs of love from our business community

n the area in the last 24 hour i am, as always, humbled and touched by their support. i can confirm for you at time that we identified theec su with help through other investigative techniques by using facial recognition tenology from the maryland image repository system. i would like to thank governor hogan for allowing us that help. hank the ike to maryland combined analysis center, its commanders and the state police for being so present in helping us the suspect. we were able to use that and a couple other techniques to sure we knew who the bad guy was. i will not say his name today. i refuse to do it. i wis n you wou do it, but i know better. he doesn'teserve us to talk about him one more second. thank you to the maryland mbined analysis center. there are no other suspects we're looking for now.

we have no reason to believe b anybody els the suspect was involved in this atrocity. we did recover the suspect's car after a lengthy searchnearby. we have conducted a search warrant on that. e can't g you much more on that now because we're still putting puzzle pieces together. we did also do overnight a search warrant in the 400 block of armstrong court, maryland state police helped us serve that warrant last night. i would like to thank them again. we did find evidence at the residence. i can't go into details about it, but i will tell you that it's evidence showing the origination of planning, things like thatn his apartment and ite shows what knew we would find, which is that we have one bad guy and that for his own reasons he close to do what he did yesterday.

i think the investigator made the call. the investigator involved is retired. i have not had a chance to talk to him yet. make calls every day. i think he made a call based on what he was presented. everyay we tal to somebody who doesn't want to press charges. in maryland, if it' a felony, we push. if it's a misdemeanor, a lot of misdemeanors go the way of not charging. so i have to say i don't feel the department was negligent in any way. image repository system. he analysis center ran the picture through that system and that was able to t identify suspect. we would have been much longer in identifying him and being able to push forward in the investigation without that system. it was a huge thing for us last night and thus for the citizens of anne arundel county. it's my understanding that we had the initial incident with social media platforms, and if it's twitter, i'll take your word for it. if it's instagram, i would accept o.that, we had the instances in '13, t then it w dark. my understanding is that very shortly before the inciden there were further posts. i could be wrong on that. to be honest with you, i have not dug that much into that. the chief there updating usn the five people shot and killed yesterday at the capital gazette. first starting out,he chief and his officers informing us that two people injured and released. two "capital gazettmployees are out of the hospital, so there is some good news. we did learn some new information on this investigation. ofourse the police chief there refusing to say the name of the suspect, 38-year-old jarrod ramo t fingerprints were not altered as initially reported by an officer yesterday during one of the news briefings. the chief telling us there was a lag on getting a posite i.d. on the suspect through his fingerprints. also the chief confirming that the identification was positively made with the help on technology maryland, facial

recognition technology and some other techniqs that were used. the chief informing us again that this suspect is not cooperating and telling us there are no oer suspects. they have recovered his car. after a lengthy search and we have been following the search at his home in laurel. the chief telling us that they found evidence showing origination of planni. then they talked about the gun. the weapon used in this terriblg y. a shotgun, a 12 gauge pump action shotgun that was legally purchased, the chief told us, about a year or so ago. the chief reiterating what law enforcement have said all along, that this has been or was a targeted atck.
