200,000 african american soldiers and sailors who served in the civil war in the union army during the civil war. since this statue, this memorial was put up, it's undergone some. dow jone you can see the marksd cause primarily bybo skateders but the panels containing the names of the people who served need some work too. if you take a wide shot at what's going on here, there's an army of folks ready to clean this memorial up and sw us the tlc needed. it's an effort by the mayor's office and new day usa, a veteran-lending organization. and we talked to some of nve folks ived in this effort. for some of them, this is like paying homage to their efforts. >> it means everything. they're giving back to their community and the national park service and this great nation. >> it's very important to me. particularly as someone who served 30th years i u.s. military and coast guard, and

come out west with us. you'll see a scene. extreme heat and drought sparking dozens of fires. this is in the western part of th country in california. wildfires are threatening hundreds of homes south of the california/oregon border. in colorado a fire there destroyed more than 130 homes. it charred thousands of acres. and the record hot temperatures happening right now on the wests they aren't helping matters when it comes to fighting wildfires. some areas reached 116 degrees. many tried to beat the heat out on the beach here. officialseshut down acc to hiking and biking trails to prevent people from suffering exhaustion. >> it's way too hot to do the normal stuff. eping hydrated, speed down just staying careful out there. >> and at first i want a cone. it's too hot so they use a p.

now, our eyes focus on what ise hag off the coast of the carolinas right now. we've got tropical depression number three. i was just in north carolina yesterday on the beach here in you could see some of the rough surf that was coming in. a lot of rip currents around the carolina coastline up to the outer banks. it's meandering off the southeast coast. the winds are likely on the eastern side of . watches. no warnings are issued on the u.s. coastline right there. the strongest winds are east of this. and really, that's going to head out to sea with really low impact for us. you can see a lot of clouds are going to stay just off the coast of the outer banks. it's going to continue to push out to sea while we are here with punnty ofine even through the day tomorrow. spinning off the coast. not animpact to our area. not impact for tomorrow. temperatures in the mid 80s. plenty of sunshine. we keep sunshine going monday,
