hospital and as it goes now this threat lly a verba towards some doctors but calls came in, two of them about, 10:15 thisorning to 911 from security officers saying that there was an active shooter on the loose at the campus of the washington hospital center, and that's what is led to the lockdown. police responded in full force. the call to 911 came ihortly after 10:00 this morning. the initial dispatch call indicated an active shooter at the center and police shut dn in and around the hospital campus and while police, some officers armed with long guns, sendched the hospital inside outside. a u.s. park police helicopter was brought in to search the roof tops. as the search continued the campus was put into lockdown. first, one building and then three more buildings locked down. within minutes police determined the situation wasctually a verbal threat and not an actual

synthetic drug. d.c. fe has taken more than 100 overdose patients to the hospital in the span of just four days. compare that to all of last july when there wereer 105 se calls for the entire month. it's linked to a bad ball. of synthetic cannabinoids. a k-2e circulating in district. right now our darcy spencer is talking with health officials. we'll hear what they have to say coming up in just a faw minutes. this afternoon we learned that the president has invited russian leader vladimir putin to visit washington this fall. thiseomes as deals with the continued fallout from that summit ini. helsi today the senate unanimously passed a resolution voicing strong opposition to allowing russia to interview u.s. diplomats and agents suspected of crimes. president putin has said that he mayllow the u.s. to interview he 12 russians indicted by mueller team in exchange.

we'reetng new information today about that recent spike in drug overdoses in the city. there have been more than00 since saturday, and it's all linked to a synthetic subpeance. darcyer is live in southwest d.c. to tell us more about this.

darcy? wendy, we just wrapped up a prs conference here at the d.c. medical examiner's office l what we jusrned is that here at the office they did some testing of some material that was found just yesterday, and they determined that there's a brand-new synthetic drug on the street here in d.c. at this point they are trying to see if this new drug is connected to some of the overdoses we've seen here over the last several ds. now, like you said, there have been more than 100 overdoses over just the last four days just here in the distric it's bei linked to so-called bad batch of synthetic marijuana, also known as k2 or ice, but what they were telling us at this pressco nference isit that probably something else because this is a new chemical compound, again, that's not been seen here in the district. these drugs are illegal, and d.c. -- the medical examiner is saying they are also extremely

dangerous >> this isn't a like marijuana but it acts different. we call it cannabinoids now because it's something totally different. is extremely dangerous, and i think the community needs to understand that what is now out on the street we don't kno really what it is yet, we are finding now new compound that d.c. has never seen before. the message is stayway from this stuff. >> reporter: so, again, that's the message for people totay away from these synthetic drugs because you really don't know what you are getting. there have been some fatalities and they are trying to figure out if any fatalities are ict connected to any of these synthetic drugs. they say that test will go take a couple of weeks. wendy, back to you. >> dorothy, i'm just curious. is it easily marked? do you know you are getting this synthetic stuff? there's a lot of stuff, you know, being sold atores

everywhere, and i'm not talking about the legal clinics. i'm talking about stuff btng sold corner drug stores in some parts of the city. how do you know it's this substance? well, that wasn't specifically addressed at the press conference becau these are doctors, you know. the medical examiner and the fonsic doctorere talking about this, but really this is something that it sounds like it's being t sold on streets. of course, there have been cases of things being sold in the corner store, but ite sounds l this is happening at the street level, and, again, some of this material was gathered as evidence taken right here to the lab in d.c.,, test and they are getting that word out right away that if someone is trying to sell you ts materia it is a plant material that's apparently being sprayed wit the synthetic material. you need to stay away from it. you just don't know what you're getting, and it could be fatal. >> that's scary stuff. thanks, darcy.

new york's mayor has order an investigation into the steam pipe blast and what looked like billowing smoke turned out to be steam after decades-old underground piping exploded that. pipe blew up and had been laid 86 years ago. so there was -- there was an initial fear that the explosion onleased asbestos andht they say there's no public health concern but the city will conduct an investigation. no major injuries were reported. once again this afternoon the white house announcing talkr are uay to have talks here with vladimir putin in washington this. comes after the summit in helsinki and several days of walkbacks on comments made president trump. and in the past hour nbc's andrea mitchell spoke with the director of nationalll inence and the meddling in our election. >> we have to be relentless in
