ahead. hi, good morning. i'm angie goff. today is a weather-alert day. and we'll have the latest on the risk of flooding in just a momein. but we bith the deadly fire that could be the result of a lightning strike. the fire spread quickly on woodscape drive in clarksville, maryland, and it ended in tragedy. just moments ago, the howard county executive identified the irefighter who died as nathan flynn. they released his picture here. here's the first career firefighte to die in theine of duty to die in the history of the howard county fire department. >> this is the first time as tho ty executive noted that we have had to w dealh this in our county. and obviously, we don't know what to do rig now. and news4's nicole jacobs has been on the scene all morning long in clarksville. and she joins us now live with a look at why the fire was so tough to fight.

in woodscape drive in clarksville. the neighbor heard it. >> we s a bright flash and then a loud, not normal, lightning hit. >> reporter: firefig arrived to fight the flames from the inside. that's when tragedystruck. >> suddenly we had a firefighter goor through the flo of the structure. >> reporter: prompting a mayday call. all firefighters ordered out until the rapid intervention team could pull the fallen from the home. >> the firefighter is a 13-year veteran of the herod county fire department and services. and was assigned to our rivers park fire station. >> reporter: daybreak brought more flames as the qu 7300e-foot home burned. smoke and fire overpowering at times, eve as crews poured water from every angle. >> this is a large house. and there's a lot of a wood and lot of framing. i remember when it was being

for the workweek. some of you woke u this morning tor, thundeven lightning. meteorologist amelia draper is here now with howuch more we can expect today. hi, amheia. >> angie. here's the latest on storm team 4 radar where i'mai tracking in chester county. i'm not picking up rainasid from this one area of rain. scattered shers are outthere. otherwise it is cloudy and muggy. more clouds are moving into the orea. we'll continueeal with rain at times, not just this afternoon, but throughout the day tedorrow and onsday as well, potentially getting a break on thursday. because of all the rain seen and how much more we could see and likely will see, everybody is under a flash flood watch. this is goi to go until at least 4:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. but i do expect that the national weather service will likely extend the flash flood watch through the middle of thek ek. not including this morning's rain. so far, we have seen about inches of rainfall. and we could see another 2 to 5,

even more.hrough sund so we're going to continue to track flooding concerns with flood warnings in effect forsi e ka creek and anne arundel counties that will go through seneca until further tice. this flood warning down in anne arundel county wil expire at noontime today, angie. >> amelia, thank you so much. 11:06 right now. and the sinkhole is causing problems still in germantown,an. you can see jus how big it is there. this was discovered by a police officer early yesterday morning. they are reporting that a metal pipe that is supposed to drain watter into a creek a rustednd collapsed. the hole is 15 to 20 feet deep. and repairs are expected to tak two weeks. >> i live right nearby here. so i can take a back road around, but people commuting to work,t's going to be a major inconvenience for them. >> the road is shut down near

crystal ooke road and rocks drive. you can use md 118 as your alternate. nearly 1 million gallons of diluted waste water dumped into the creek in fort washington this weekend. the sanitation commission says the broad creek wastewater pumping station overflowed from all the rain we gotsa on rday. you can see where that pumping station is located right here on our map. it's important to note that they say the drinking water and wasts watetem are separate. so this overflow did not affect the drinking water. right now the recount in the race fory montgomery cou executive is underway. david blair lost tha race t mark elrich by just 79 votes. david blair said that affected some 80,000 voters and could have an effecttc on the e of the race. the board of elections anticipates the recount wil ly take one day. the winner of the democratic republican ill face robin fixer and independent nancy flourine. today will be dr. monica

goldson's first day on onas the interim ceo of prince george's county schoils. shebe appointed this afternoon. goldson is the second woman to lead the princegeorge's county school system. the former ceo kevin maxwell stepped down in may, this following several scandals. metro rider are working around a big shutdown because two station on the red line are closed for repairs. and will be this way for week. justin finch has details. >> reporter: red line service out from now until september, affecting the rhode island avenue and brooklyn stations. crews actually get off the upper track. perhaps you can hear the hammering. and no trains will be on the tracks for several weeks. now, meantime, workers are repairing structural issues here at the rhode island station. you might recall back in 2016. falling herencrete that forced them to shut down for emergency repairs. agingre also updating the

at the time of this accident. and the donationsontinue pour in for the family of a popular d.c. restaurant gemanag, ral manager, shot and killed in a robbery. christian broder was a general manager of mill lee's restaurant. he was waiting for an uber with his wife, brother and sister-in-law after a wedding reception in atlanta. they got the car that pulled up and thought it was their uber driv driver. then they were robbed and shot. broder died o monday night. we are told that the suspect has been arrested and charged in nnection with this crime. the privacy concerns after a ride share driver reported hundreds of passengers were ecorded without the knowledge. and it was completely legal. this is according to the st. louis post dispatch. the st. louis area uber and lyft driver ve-streamed hundreds of rides to thousands of his

and most of those in florida. although last week we saw two kids bitten by sharks off the coast of new york's fire island. the attacks just a few miles apart. and with an hour of each other. of the 465 known shark species living in our oceans today,he bull shark is one of the biggest an the boldest. it's considered the third most dangerous after the tiger shark and the great white. it can grow as lar as 8 feet long and weigh up to 500 pounds. and it's teeth are like raisers. the strength of a bite could ereak bones. but as long as weave them alone, experts believe they are not interested in eating us. >> we're not othe menu. they're really not a threat tou >> i don't know. i mean, a shark is a shark. >> right? you see one in the water and you are like, no, thank you. >> we were talking about how fascinating and beautiful the creatures awhenever you go to

deal withaves of rain through the afternoon and evening hours. tme pockets of heavier rain that could lead flooding, even flash flooding issues. aremember, you are under flash flood watch through at least 4:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. and i think that will be extended. notice the cloudy skies otherwise. i'm stopping future weather tomorrow morning, 6:00 a.m.n, once ag some of us dealing with rain for that morning commute. it continues through the midday and afternoon hours. the tuesday evening commute also lookgyg like a s one. and then pretty much a repeat performance in the forecast on wednesday a well. so the severe weather impacts by far and awaywehrough esday. they will be about the heavy rain leading to more flooding concerns across the area. but i can also see some gusty winds and with how wet and moist the ground, even a little bit of wind is helping to bring trees down as the week starts t wear o and we receive more rain. we'll pick up another 2 to 5 inches pentially a little bit more, bringing some of the oainfall amounts by friday around a foot of rainfall.

hit-and-run drive making the situation even worse, police say that driver was her very own brother. family members say nancy marino asked her brother to take her to th airport over theweekend. the two apparently argued and marino climbed outar of the on sully road. that's when witnesses say michael marino ran her over and then kept going.ti res say nancy was trying to help her brother get some much-needed help. >> she was beautiful. and she was caring. and she just had a good heart. >> well, police caught up with rino in anne arundel county. his surviving sister said he was at a casino gambling. he was charged with murder and t-and-run. >> disturbing information sheds light on the deadly hostage situation at t andy los angeles grocery store. the crisis inside a trader joe's played out live on tv. miguelew almaguer has n details.

inches at reagan national on saturday. we had another record rainfall amount of 4 inches yesterday. we did not set a o record with rainfall amount. the record to beat yesteay was 4.35 inches. but we got over an inch of rain, so not including the rain we saw this morning, we have picked up eight inches of rain in less th a week. and that is leading to flooding issues. you can see the showers out there back around the91 corridor. this is moving south to north, so largely in the metro area, i fthink you'll have a hours of drive time for me to run out to get something done. but as a the afterno evening hours wear on, we'll start to see more rain moving back in with the potential f some heavy rain and some thunderstorms as well. because of all the rain that we have had and how much more we're going to see, the national weather has issued a flash flood watch. thiss going to go until at least 4:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, but i think it's going anto be ed throughout the day tomorrow and then again on wednesday. so so far you have seen over 8

our kids may not want to hear this,ut in a couple weeks they are heading back to school. as parents we have to start to plan now. thtax-free holidays in virginia and maryland are just around the corner. virginia three-da sales tax holiday starts on friday, august 3rd maryland's five-day tax-free holiday begins on sunday, august 12. the district did away with its tax-free holiday bac in 2010. here's nbc's chris clackum with what to keep in mind as you prepare to shop. >> reporter: most of the projected $83 billion to be spent on supplies, clothing and electronics in ck-to-school shopping this year will not be for the younger students. i>> most of that going to come from our college shoppers. so a little over $55 billion from families who are shopping for their kids in college. >> reporter: the last thing until mid-september, back-to-school's shopping season is well underway, as most parents are well aware. >> they're not saving it for the
