>> flynn is the first career firefighter in howard county to be killed in the line of duty. derrick ward is in clarksville this evening where this whole community is feeling this tragic loss. derrick? >> reporr: indeed they are. we heard that from the county executive, and you hear f itm the people in the neighborhood. you can see what a massive structure this was, and you tan se amount of damage that was done to this fire. of course, the biggest tragedy of all, the loss of life that happened with that firefighter at this fire that happened before dawn today. a this fire was caused by lightning strike, an act of nature in this massive home in th 700 block of woodscape drive in clarksville. it started just 2efore0 a.m. >> this is a sad and tragic day for howard county. nty eporter: howard c firefighter nathan flynn lost his life doing what the men and women of firefighters do routinely. >> as the firefighters were making their way inside the structure, firefighter flynn fell through the floor, f

first floor to the basement. >> reporter: a may day call went out and aescue team rushed in. they located flynn amid smoke and flames that raged the basement. a 13-year veteran of the howard county fire department he was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. >> we know there's aays the possibility of this day, but we hope it never comes. >> reporter: three pple inside the homemade it out safely. the fire would eventually go to seven alarms, and it took hours to put out completely. departments from a number of surrounding respond and now a different response is called for. >> he's a brother, and our job now is to make sure that his familiar hi and our brother are laid t rest with dignity and with all the honors we can provide to him.im. it's also our job to take care of the family rever. >> reporter: back with you live now.

coming out of the storms. we've seen so much over the past week. it's really quite incredible the amount of rain that we've seen. i mean, saturda alone four inches of rain and last tuesday if you remember, just about a week ago, w saw close to 3 inches in an out there right near we're dealing with clouds around the d.c. metro area. you can see low clouds, and there are some blue skies through there. will 4 degrees and winds out of the sou at 17 miles per hour. we've seen the winds gusting over 20 miles per hour for the lastouple of days and down towards the beaches, the same thing. a very windy week out ath the bend that's exactly what we're seeing. the radar right now and not raining this is going to be the case. we'll see scattered showers all t'day and notice w going on here. we've got a line that's starting coming, and this line is right in towards fairfax county. woodbridge towards quantico and fredericksburg, this is moving towards fairfax county. let's say over towards falls

king george county and we're locking at areas ofeavier rain and one coming over the city of fairfax isyear. s coming right through burke and clifton and this area of heavy rain will come through the city of fairfax in the next half hour to an hour. another pretty heavy shower across i'd 95. this is goingight case over the next couple of days, especially into the day today and tomorrow.hi tomorrow we we could see widespread areas of heavy rain. that's why we have the flash flood watch in effect for the entire area, and that fla flood watch is into effect tomorrow and tomorrow night and 2:00 a on wednesday evening and even wednesday we're expecting heavier rain. and say w you all that who we think gets the best chance for rain. turn around, don't drown. seen way too many water rescues the last couple of diss. >> good a there. thank you, doug. >> all that rain that we've had here is taking a serious toll on area roads. a huge snekhole o up in gaithersburg.

aimee cho is livek with a l at what it means for drivers in the area there. this is one of two huge sinkholes in montgomery county. ll us about it. y. >> leon and wendy, i want to get a sense of how massive this sinkhole is. this is on game preserve road near 355. crews are hard at work trying to pour concrete and fill this thing in. they are hoping to g havee preserve road reopened by friday ewd the rain in the forecast over the next f days could make filling that inkhole in a little tough. this isn't the only sinkhole that we've seen in montgomery county. another one opened up yesterday just a few miles from here. hurleys on father boulevard near winfield drive in germantown and crews hard at work as well o and that filled in pretty nicely. crews are hoping to have that ed reopy friday as well. as you can see, that concrete is being poured i neighbors around there tell us they are surprised to see two sinkholes opened so close to home.
