emergency room at the fairfax hospital. the body has beensi decom and may have been there for quite a while. investigators say they have not found any signs a of crime. but they're still looking into this. the body has been handed over to the medical examiner who will idtify and ultimately determine a cause of death. 85 people, we know th they're waking up right now without a home this morning. ths's because of t fire we've been following that moved through the greenbelt apartment co alex. >> that'ot of devastation out there. it happened at the franklin square apartmentsbrn zewood terrace. chopper 4, you can see, was up above when thewe flame still shooting out of that building. we're going to show you this view here. you can see smoke over the ltway. that's how high it rose. the roof is still missing from that structure. many units appear to be gutted. the second time this past week, firefighters were at that we've heard that just the day beforeesidents apparently complained about gas smell. when they came, they said it

alton rivers attked the man in columb heights yesterday evening. they say rivers stabbed him in the middle of a crosswalk at 14th stree and perry place northwest. no one else was hurt. but rivers isha facinges of second degree murder. residents in a virginia apartment complex tell us they're on edge after aiolent attack. a woman says a man raped her at begun poiguneoint. it hapon wednesday morning. prince william county police say the attacked the woman in an enclosed stairwe. made her wait in the woods while he made his get away. residents are unnerved. >> it's ary. like, kids live here. >> it was very frightening to think that somebody could be waiting inside your building. >> investigators say the victim noticed the attacker had a beer belly and wearing air jordan shoes. she also says he had an army sleeve tattoong with wri on it

re theing story from the vatican this morning. >> former d.c. archbishop theodore mccarrick resigned from the college of cardinals. he's facing several sex abuse allegations: derrick ward ise live with m details on this. hey, derrick, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this word comes down from the vatican today. the pope has agreed to mccarr k mccarrick's request to be relieved from the position with college of cardinals. the archbishop of washington from 2001 to 2006.

he reached the retirement -- in the ensuing years, the incredible accusations of abuse came forward. some dated back to 50 years ago. some to positions he held before becoming therchbishop of washington and revelations that settlement were made with young men who said they were young priests oreminarians at the time the abuse incidents happened and come forward. the church paid out hundreds of thousands of dollars to these young men to stay quiet during the allegations coming forward. the pope had ordered that mccarrick stay in pyer and seclusion while the church prepared some sort of nctions. his resignation from the college of cardinals will alleviate the sanctions. they will still be carried out in some form. another shocking bit of news regard rg the and specifically the catholic

all right. there's a new addition around the d.c. area. the animal welfare organization. teaming up with scientists andc wildlifetists counting the number of cats. it's the d.c. cat count. lauren is here from the humane rescue to break thisand explain what this means. good morning.yo thanfor being here. we're counting cats across the d.c. area. we're counting indoor cats and outdoor cats. how in the world areou going to count all these katz cats? >> fortunately, scientists are guiding the research component of it. we'll be putting cameras around the district to take photos of cats and wildlife. we'll be asking pet ownerso submit photos of their cats and surveying pet owners. to get more inrmation, we will also be tracking shelter data.

at the end of this, we'll be creating an integrated model that will hopefully show the flow of cats between the indoor owned to the outdoor to the shelter. we can appropriately understand kind of where cats are coming from in our city. oere are they being born. are we getting athe cats who might benefit from our services and our organization. >> then the ultimate goal is you're trying to make sure that what you're doing as the humane rescue, for example, y reaching the numbers you need to reach? >> right. currently, we have a return for cats outside to prevent them from having more babies. we continue to have kittens every year into the shelter in need of homes. that's unsustainable at the rate that we're going. we want to reach enough cats that way. we want to make sure that pet owners are keeping their cats doors. are we reaching all the pet owners? they come to us on mednd behavior advice. then the shelter data. where are the cats coming from? truly analyzing the intercept of the three different segments of cat population.
