archbishop of washington from 2001 to 2006 and rose to the level of cardinal. now he is being stripped of that title and removed from an elite group of church leaders tt advises the pope. it's because of a widening scandal involving allegations of abuse. in the newly released statement, the archdiocese of washington said, for me than 30 years, the archdiocese of washington has encouraged survivors of sexu abuse toome forward, and has sought to not only address claims of abu sftly but to also offer assistance to survivors of abuse in the hope i of bringing h to those who have been harmed." the statement also says that the confidential settlement while he was a priest in new jersey was not known p tviously to karld nall or the archdiocese of washington. the statement comes aay after one of mckerik's alleged victims told news 4 that mckerik abused him for more than two decades. the victim lives in loudoun county and asked that we not show hisace anddentify him only as james. >> and i'm going to sue the
