aeromexico plane crashed into a eld at the end of the runway in durao, mexicoursting into flames. amazingly more than 100 people survived including all four creb meers. ten passengers who made it out alive are from the chicago area including an american priest, the director offur lady o guadalupe in des plaines. a statement from the amp diocese resting.rt and another reached by our chicago station wmaq. she describes the terror when the >> people were on top of each other and trying to get out. i grabbed my daughter's hand and some medicine that basically keeps her alive. i tried to get out with her. somebody lerally pusheder back to get through. >> this woman interviewed on mexican televisn said she escaped by jumping through a hole in the plane. i saw a lot of fire, she says, i don't know how people could get

out. people showing aftermath of biowing flames. first responders can be seen helping passengers to safety. some able to walk away from the disastern their own, others being carried out on stretchers. officials say it took emergency crews 15 minutes to get to the scene and start knocking down the fire. the flames engulfed the entire fuselage. the searing heat leaving the plane a gutte shell. flight 2431 was a 190 like this one. it departedrom durango in northwest mexico headed to mexico city around the time the plane took off, a violent storm through the area, rinn c in waves with fierce winds, even hail. the governor of durango said initial reports and weather was a factor adding the plane, after lifting suddenly, was affected by a gust of wind causing it to descenforcefully. aeromexico says in a statement we deeply regret thisccident and the families of those

involved and affected are in our thoughts and prayers. one obvious question for investigators, given the very bad weather, why did the crew decide to take off in the first ladies. >> okay, tom. thank you. >> we are now joined by one of the survivors. alberto herera who was flying back home to chicago. alberto, good morning. describe those moments on the plane. ofe've felt turbulence and thought, that's scary. put it in context. what was it feeling like up there? >> i've felt turbulence before. to put in weirdest terms, if h you'verd of fire sense, felt like something was wrong. at that point i just started out of instinct bracing for impact as the pla started jolting and slammed into the ground. >> we know about the spidey sense when you feel like so tthing is about happen.

when you hit the ground, we know that the plane started toburn. what did you see and hear next? >> essentially as the plane was hitting thefground, mys included, we started screamin we didn't know what was going on, so we went tour first -- our first gut reaction. we were bracing for impact. ce the actual plane stopped, we could see the flames on either side of the engine obviously because we hit the ground and kind of rolled -- not rolled but skidded. so basically thein c just started filling with black smoke. at that pointe what wanted to do was find the nearest exit. obviously as i was walking towards the back, i was checking the seats to see if anybody was knocked out or anything, if they needed assistance to help drag out of the pla essentially.

>> well, i don't have to tell you, dialberto, it's ince not only that you survived but that everyone survived. how are you thinking about that this morning? i knowt's early but how do you feel? >> well, i was talking t one of my relatives last night. basically what -- i went into how can i help other people kin of mode. when o stepped outf the plane in the back, i stood there and i s helping the people that were behind me come down.ah ye, the slide was there but you couldn't use thelide to slide down. the plane was at a weird anglee wh could reach up and grab senior citizens as they wanted to exit the plane and help them come down or use my hands as kind of like a springboard to jump out kind of. i feel that it's kind of a miracle that we alle m it.
