ne declared that fleeing domestic or gang violence will no longer be considered grounds for asylum. the aclu and other groups want that reversed. among their clients are a mother from esalvador and her daughter. they had been ordered deported, but the government agreed to keep them in the u.s. while the judge held an emergency hearing thursday, but during that hearing at federal court here in washingtis, the judgevered that immigration authorities were already taking the mother and child back to el salvador. clearly upset, the judge ordered the government to bring them back, turning theoulane , if necessary. he issued this order -- "return carmen a her daughter to the united states forthwith" -- that's judge speak for right now. he said he would neither tolerate or excuse any delay in comp with his order. judge emmitt sullivanai he would hold attorney general jeff sessions, the homeland security secretary, and other government ficials in contempt if the mother and child were not brought back. u.s. officials say the plane did

land in el salvador, but the mother and her daughter never got off and were immediately flown back here, back into deportation, to wait for the judge to ruleer on whe they can seek asylum or not. mhe aclu says it must have been terrifying for t to think that he were going back to the country where they raisedcr ible claims that they could be killed. hoda, craig? >> wow, all right. petemswill thank you. also new this morning, new questions are being raised about the raid on that desert compound in new mexico where children were allegedly being taught how to commit school shootings, and why authorities dn't act sooner. we are also hearing from the suspect's father, a controversial leader o a new york mosque, for the first time. nbc's gadi schwartz has theery test on that. gadi, good morning. >> reporter: well, the imam says that he had no idea what was going on at this compound here in new mexico, and the property owner says the people who lived here almost never left, but this is where 11 children lived. i want to show you this. this is a trailer that is

basically buried in the ground. you can imagine 11 children living in these conditions. a disturbing mix of trash, ruined toys and the evidence of a lethal arsenal.ma remains were also found here. authorities have still not confirmedhether the body is that of a missing 3-year-old boy, but after last friday's raid, guns, ammunition, and other piece potential evidence were left behind. >> found two gopros, the video camera, laptop. there were two phones sitting in that truck, like cell phon y. >> reporte found evidence. i mean -- >> yeah. and then found his passport, siraj's passport, that had enactually shown he had beo saudi arabia. >> reporter: property owner jason badger says that's not all investigators missed. they dug this tunnel out. he says law enforcement should have acted when they alerted them that -o3-ye abdul-ghani wahhaj was there, the 3-year-old allegedlybducted by his father. >> an innocent child that's sick hed here in pain, suffering.

>> reporter: theff has denied our interview request. the fbi, which is surveilling the compound, is not commenting. but the father of one suspect is sbe speaking out. the controversial leader of this brooklyn mosque says he's beeit cooperatinh police since his andson's abduction in november. >> we have been meefong with law ement since day one. >> reporter: he says they had no idea what his son wasp ton new mexico and when he heard the ioup was looking for food, he passed on theormation to authorities. >> i said find out where we should send the food. she did, and we called the police. that's why the police came in. >> reporter: police suspects for child abuse and called them muslim extremists. it is said one of the children was trained to prepare for school shootings. lucas morton, father of another suspect, doesn't believe the accusations. >> it's out of hisar ter. i think it's just propaganda and lies, you know, the usual lies that people put on rmuslims.

brutal attack, some calling it a hate crime. police say sahib singh mat was alking near a park monday in manteca, california, when two people in hoodies approach him. singh mat, who doesn't speak glish, tries to walk away, but the attackers confront him and begin kickingim inhe chest, knocking him to the ground. he attempts to defend himself when one of the attackers kicks him again. thettacker kicks him several more times, finally spitting on him before leaving. onednesday, police arrested 18-year-old tyrone mcallister and another 16-year-old, charging them with attempted robbery, elder abuse, and assault with a deadlyweapon. nearby unionity police chief darryl h mcallister says and his wife worked with local investigators, helping to track down one of suspects, who turned out to be their own son. mcallister posting an emotional letter tohe department's facebook page, writing, "my

case osd . but during that hearing, the judge learned that immigration authorities were already taking the mother and child bk to el salvador. the judge ordered the plane be turned around. he als threatened to hold u.s. attorney general jeff sessio in contempt. another 20,000 people were ordered to evacuate overnight as those californi wildfires raged on. governor jerry brown declared a state of emergencyor two counties outside of l.a. a anon wildfire there is moving dangerously close to a residential neighborhood. meantime, the carr fire in northe california claimed an eighth life, a mechanic who volunteered to help fight he. and nfl's preseason kicked into high gear last night, and the number of players renewed their protests during the national anthem. their actions included taking a knee or raising a fist. others chose to remain off the field unt anthem was finished. those protests started back in 2016 tw attention to racial inequality in the united states. president trump has railed against players who take part

the players union and the league agreed to hold off on enforcing newules whilehe two sides worked out a resolution. also on this busy friday morning, aisg star in college basketball's coaching ranks ha assault that led to the death of a new york city tourist. nbc's anne thompson i here with that story. hey, anne, good morning. >> good morning. this is really a tragic story. jamill jones is an assistant coach at wake-forest university. police say he punched w a man had banged on his car window early in the morning, causingo that man fall and hit his head. now jones is charged withr misdemeaassault, and the victim's family is speaking out, stunned that the charges aren't mo serious. sunday's deadlyt incid has left sandor szabo's family shattered. >> it's just devastating that people just -- >> he's taken from us ts early. >> -- will just never know. tmean, we were just so lucky that god gave him us for this long. >> reporter: at around 1:15

a.m., szabo left brother's hotel room in queens, new york, after celebrating at a family wedding. >> he was trying to get an uberd his cell phone died. and so, heust tapped on the wrong guy's window. >> reporter: szabo reportedly banged on the windows of multiple cars parked nearby, triggering a violent response from a driver iteide a w suv. according to the nypd, police at the scene wereold the individual punched the 35-year-old male victim in the face following a confrontation. po sce say afterbo was hit, he fell backwards, slamming his head on the. paveme >> he was hit so hard, his lip was pushed into his t upperth and came through his lip. >> reporter: he was taken to the hospital and put on life support. >> we were just hoping for a miracle, that he would through, and we always had somebody holding his hands to just see if he would just squeeze, give our hand a squeeze there. us know he was >> reporter: szabo never

regained consciousness. he died two days later. the alleged assaant, jamill jones, fled the scene but turned imself in four days later, accompanied by his attorney. >>hat took so long for him to turn himself in? >> the jones family sends their deepest condolences and sympathies to the szabo family. >> reporter: the jones family then issued a statement, characterizing the incident as the accidental death of savor szabo. it says jones is a wolfson and father of two young children. >> i used to be a mother of two as well, and i'm sorry, yours condolenre a little bit too late. >> if you're this good father, son, husband, why not try to take him to the hospital -- >> do the right thing. >> -- and if you can save his life? >> reporter: the statement also says the jones family stands by jamill and his legalight to be presumed innocent in what is ultimately a tragic incident. i jones an assistant basketball coach at wake-forest university in north carolina. he is now in custody awaiting
