"early today" starts now. i'm phillip mena. >> i'm frances rivera. xactly one year afte demonstrations in charlottesville, virginia turned deadly, a small group of white nationalists swed up for eye buanned protest in the nation's capital. they were outnumbered by throngs and counter protesters. >> there were some tense moments, but security was tight and the protests were largely peaceful. coming as a relief to law enforcement who had bearing up for this day for months. nbc's nikki carvajal has thela st. >> reporter: lots of people in dc, it was a tense weekend leading up to the protest with permits for about 400 people filed for the unite the right rally. ultimately, only about 20 showed up and by some accou s it was even fewer than that. they were far outnumbered by counter esprters.
