very latest on the investigation. hey, hans, good >> good morning, guys. overnight, the fbi announcing they recovering the flight data recorders, but this shows a major risk the threat of an insider attack. 29-year-old richard russell didn't have a pilot's license, he certainly didn't have authorization to fly, yet somehow he was able to get a in-engine aircraft off the ground before crashing an hour later. overnight, the fbi announcing thhe recovered plane's flight data and cockpit voice recorders. they he that the black boxes will shed new light on what led to richard russell's high-flying joyride. iday, russell flew this 7060 commercial aircraft through the skies over seattle. after stealing the plane from sea-tac, he talked to air traffic controllers while doing wild stunts. >> hey, pilot guy, can this

structures were red and miraculously, no one was hurt. >> all rit, hahns. hard to believe nobody else but the pilot. >> lots to talk about in regards to security. let's bring in tom, who covers aviation for us. 17 years after 9/, we all go through these security checks at the airport. doesn't this justexpose what would seem to be a huge gap in security for workers at the airport? >> it is a gap, but it's hard to close this one. airlines and airports require rport employees to undergo criminal background checks, but mental health screenings are a different matter. while pilots are asked about mental health, and they must report any mental health issues, the same is not true for ground staff. of course you come into privacy issues regarding somebody's personal medical whsue. we are looking at here is a possibility they have to look at whether there's a way to secure the cockpit in particular, to make it a much more complicated process to start up a plane. upis is a q-400, not an easy

plane to start it's a propeller, a prop plane, and it requires a number of steps to go through to start the plane up. he went through all o that perfectly. so should there be a way to litelly have a code that every pilot must punch in in order to start up the aircraft? there is no ignitionkey, no lock on the door. maybe that needs to change in some fashion. >>mp cated. just lock the door you would think. >> exactly, all right, tom, thank you. now to that breaking news overnight. hundreds injured when a wooden pier suddenly collapsed at a festival in northeast spain. nbc's chief global correspondent bill neely has the latest. good morning. >> good morning, ishoda. was the climax of a weekend festival in a spanish port city. a great setting on a long boardwalk out to sea. a rap artist w on his first song when he told the crowd to do something that would cost them dearly. as one concertgoer said, that was the wot moment of my life.

the end of a summer night's festival, and ddenly, disaster the grounddisappeared. a wooden luboardwalknging into the sea and with it, hundreds of people. desperately trying to scramble clear. we were jumping, then suddenly, boom, she says, and everyase fell and crushed. the rap singer had just asked everyone to ju they did. the 100-fo longboardwalk couldn't take it. we all fell, she says. i tried to get out, but people kept falling over me. there was panic, arms and legs broken. rescue came quickly. divers were sent in to the sea to search for anyonerapped underneath the pier. so many people were trying to escape, she sa most of those hurt are in their teen or early 20s. in all, 316 were oinjured. f them seriously.
