mera. today crews are searching through tons of debris looking s for possiblevivors and there's a major investigation under way. kerry sanders in genoa this morning. good morning. >> reporter: goomorning, savannah. a horrific disaster. the death toll stands at 39, 16 victims in the hospital, 12 of them in critical condition. right now there are teams down in the rubble there searching for possible survivors. when the bridge gave way, folks who we on it fell 15 stories down below. over to theide there, you said what remains of the standing bridge, those are apartment buildings, 400 residents evacuated as that danglinghe sp of t bridge shifted overnight, shifting downwards another 3" dawn bringing no relief for rescuers working through the night, frantically searching for survivors, digging through the rubble, crawling into tight spaces.

chil some as young as 9 years old. >> kerry, thank you. there are new twists in that disturbing case of child abuse at a desert compound in new mexico. part ofowt mysteriously destroyed by authorities and the judge who granted bail to most of the suspects is now getting death threats. nbc's gadi schwarz has been on this chls since this morning. >> a different look. looks like authorities brought a bulldozer here, smashed their way through the out perimeter walls. over here you've got them plowing their way into where the trailer was. there was a small trailer that they pulled out. but in theprocess, they also leveled a lot of this compound. the propeery owner wondering why investigators have been so destructive. this morning new images of that remote new mexico compound now razed to the ground. property owner jason badger says there was a court order allowing

the seizure of the stolen trailer but he tells nbc news he was surprised to find the compound, which he believed still could have contained critical evidence knocked down, underground tunnels covered over. this is three of the five suspects accused of abusing children at that compound are expected to be released from i will gentleman. they will have to tracking monitors and stay in taos county, no drugs or alcohol and only visit their children under state supervision. even with those conditions ine, plhe judge who released them has received over 200 death threats, threats rps that closed the entire courthouse tuesday. even some of the community who agree with the ruling say they arencerned. >> i think the judge did what she was supposed to do. she followed the law by the book. butcat's still these guys are out. >> a spokesperson for the court saying in a a statement, judge's responsibility is to follow the law, not popular sentiment that mayelop from you know complete or misleading information. the judge said pdnsecutors provide any evidence to support accusations of a school
