decade ago. news4's mark segraves has been following this story since the first remains werefound. he joins us with these new developments. mark? >> reporter: yeah, a lot of new clues for police to work with. first of all, they know the identities of these women. they know that they all lived in the neighborhood where the bodies were found. they were all about the same age. and they all disappeared in the same year, within eight months of one another back in 2006. as recently as last week, investigators were still digging in the woods behind this apartment building, lking for clues. now police have the best clues r. the names of the victims. >> jewel king, who was a 48-year-old female from southwest d.c. e second was verdell jefferson, she was a 41-year-old female. our third victim isot d butts, a 43-year-old female. >> reporter: it all began in late april whe a construction crew found aku human s while

working in a crawl space of this uilding on wayne place in southeast. cadaver dogs were brought in. the skeletal remains of three women were discovered buried in and around this building. the chief medical examiner ruled the deaths homicide, saying two of the women were shot and one was killed by inflict trauma. now officials say they know a lot more about these three wome >> three females in their 40s. they are all believed to have lived in close proximity to where the remains were discovered. >> reporter: two of the women left behind small children when they disappeared. chief newsham is askin the public, if you knew these women ten years ago or if you lived on or ever visited the 100 blo of wayne place southeast back in 2006, even if you were a delive person or a postal delivery person, they want to hear from you. they say youav may information that they need and you may not even know it. so again, that 100 block of

wayne place is the spot they're focusing on back in 2006. that's the very latest, doreen, back to you. >> hope this announcement will she loose some new information on this case. mark segraves, thank you. now let's turn to the shocking grand jury report that detailed decades of abuse at the has of catholic priests in pennsylvania. this happened at a time when the current archbishop of washington was the bishopf pittsburgh. the report allegations 300 priests molested more than 1,000 children. grand jurors accused the incatholic church of cov the whole thing up. news4's meagan fitzgerald has o more reaction to the scandal and why cardinal wuerl is being criticized. >> reporter: the attorney general for pennsylvania was asked specifically abo cardinal wuerl's involvement in the investigation since he's mentioned nearly 200 tim in the report. the attorney general says the evidence that the grand jury reviewed speaks for itself.

>> this specific investigation was focused on the catholic church. and the more than a thousand victims of child sexual abuse. >> reporter: the scathing investigation led by pennsylvania attorney general josh shapiro and turned over to a grand jury alleges that some 00 catholic priests sexually abused at least a thousand children, in many cases grandrs juay church leaders turned a blind eye. >> institutions acros nthis countr just the catholic church, need is to stopng prioriti their own reputations and start focusing n the people they serve and the children that thrve. >> reporter: from 1988 to 2006, cardinal donald trump wuerl was the bishop for t archdiocese of pittsburgh. he was mentioned in the grand jury reporty 170 times. according to the report, pennsylvania authorities told wuerl back in 1989 that the church must report any algations of sexual abuse. but the grand jury criticized

the church for instead handling most complaintsrn inly. the grand jury accused wuerl of creating and using the term "c cle of secrecy" to refer to the way the church covered up the accusations of abuse. that term was handwritten on a document, and grand jurors reviewed andttributed it to wuerl. a spokesperson for archbishop wuerl says he never used that term and says the terminology was taken out of context by the jury. >> here's what i can tell you about cardinal wuerl. the public comment that he has made directly contradict the church's own documents that we found in the secret archives. and that's all spelled occupant in the grand jury report. >> reporter: we reached out to cardinaln wuerl for interview but his spokesperson repeatedly declined our request. the cardinal did issue statement saying he tried to prevent further acts of abusou of coursean read the entire statement in our nbc washington app. just search "wuerl."

federal government through a fund set aside by congress. the two dozen white supremacists fwho did show up the rally were far outnumbered by the counterprotesters. a smoother commute home on the key bridge tonight. but that wasn't the case a few hours ago. traffic cam captured smoke that played out here after car caught fire on the bridge. firefighters doused those flames as traffic started to build up. things back to normal now. we stillly don't know exact what caused this fire, but no one was hurt. the fire at a recycling plant in clarksburg, maryland is still burning. it could take several days to put it out. the warehouse on frederick road caught fire early this morning. nobody was inside at the me. route 355 was shutdown for hours, though, and traffic in the area backed up for miles. a limited water supply made it tough for firefighters to put out the flames. that fire is contained.st inveigators are still trying to figure out what caused all this.
