the school's athletic director, and we also understand that the presiden of the college has addressed this assembly. it comes on thls h of the death of jordan mcnair, a student who died june after he died in may after a football practice during the emmer. and suffered a heatstroke. now, in the ensuing investigations that hav happened, what happened the latest news is that the t university state board of regents has taken over a two-track investigation. t the ks at the culture university as well as the circumstances around the t practice andhe decisions made. dee university presint has said the university accepts legal and moral responsibility for the disions of its athletic training staff. and theoach is on leave now officially as the investigation ensues into the circumstances. there's a closed scrimmage later today. it's likely it will be among the topics discussed here and maybe

jexuberant. het runs off. he's theappiest guy in the world. he was named aer the character on frozen. todayot we g to let him go. let him go. so also we have a big check here. this is erin fromar homew trails rescue. this is patrick hall and this is stella handily who is the ceo here of the animal welfare league in alexandria. patrick, take it away. >> so this isd our sec year of clear the shelte. wifeot a great partnership with heward trails. about five years. and i just want to get out and create somess awarene between the unique relationship between the shelters and the rescues and the -- and get the wonderful animals in loving homes. >> that's wonderful that you're doing that. erin, you're a rescue. you're going to split this money between here and the welfare league. how much does this help? >> it's a huge help. as a nonprofit private rescue,

we rely on donations to survive. it's the only way we're able to he adoption duce fees and get the animals adopted. >> great. stella, this has to be helpful. >> w even thoughre a city shelter, we only get about 50% of our funding. from the ci this year our focus has been on the a lot of community outreach programs where we have been offering rabies vaccines and pet food to help people keep their pets with theri and not b them to shelters. >> i think alexandria i was hearing is doing something wonderful informal while we'ree ng the shelters, if you're not here to adopt, think about o tion. there's a program called clear it forward because eventually these cages while they'll be empty today, they'll be refilled in a week or less. so please think about giving a donation and throughout the year so you can clear it forward and wean get the animals adopted throughout the year, not just on this one day. so thank you very much.

university's football team. this stems from the death of a player in june. it was may when jordan mcnair llapsed from a heatstroke during a summer practice. hen died june. in the interim, ahanvestigation ensued. the coach is on leave and the state board of regentsas taken over the university of maryland's investigation into the circumstances of his death. now, university president lowe has said the university accepts legal and moral resr nsibility the decisions of the atetic and training staff. and this investigation is looking at two things. the culture of the football program at the university of maryland and the circumstances of that day when jordan mcnair fell and eventually died. now, parents are still coming into this meeting. we spoke with one about some of his concerns going in. this man says he has some concerns but he also has faith in this program. take a look. >> when i first hrd about

at 9:36, another warning about verifying our uber ride before you jump into the car. i policentified the man they said posed as an uber drive on u street in d.c. the passenger was beaten and forced to withdraw money from atms. officers believeus thect is tied to other armed kidnappings. >> reporr: this is a picture of 22-yr-old jesse benjamin nun. he drove up to a man in the 13 00 block of u street northwest pretending to be a ride share compan about a monthago. police say the man got in the car thinking he was going to smoke marijuana. instead of lighting up, they say nun and the accomplice allegedly robbed him of his cell phone, walletre andt card. detectives tell us they drove around to atms beating him with the gun, forcing him to withdraw

roaming down a country road last month and stopped to pick him up. >> as we focus onesetting h for animals today, wendy wants you to know about a service shelters provide that you don't realize you need until you find a wound animal a ask yourself what to do now. >> he was a mess. skinny, bli o in eye. parasites in his a e stomachs. i fed him and wrapped him in a towel. and h slept iny lap. the next day the spca agreed to keep hee. i couldn't him because i have nina, and she has a virus that can be transferred to other animals. this shelter h a special clinic that houses hard luck cases like reggie. this facilit alone spent $75,000 last yearnhese six homeless animals. it's their mission. >> we want to get them adopted, and get them into good homes.

we've got to get the better. >> reporter: i couldn't see reggie for more than a month beuse he was so sick, and last week we were reunited. look at him now. he has put on weight, gotten fluffy, and is a sweet, happy little guy. he is still too ill to be adopted. and he may need a few more months before he's ready for a home, but he is one of many still in the shelters' sick bay. animals that can't tell us abous their pt but are alive today and have a promising future. >> wendy joining fs livem the animal welfare league of alexandria. i hadn't even seenhat fore. i didn't know you had done that. that's really cool. >> yeah. >> reporter: it was the sunday right before the fourth of july, d i was coming from my little farmhouse, and he's walking in theide of the road, and i think reggie was done. he had just been -- he was a mess, and my car went by.

you're being a goodboy. joanna, what do people need to consider as they're coming day? it's one thing to have the oh, gosh, i want an animal.'s another thing, does that work for you? there is a responusbility. yoube responsibility as a pet owner. what do they need to ask themselves? >> absolutely. first off we want to kind of consider their lifestyle. when he's really active, will you do well with an active playful cat who lik to run around. maybe a dog to take jogging. for people with a laid back personality, we have dogs and cats t who like hang out, go for brief strolls. considering what your lifestyle is. elking to the families and making surerybody is on board and ready to take on the responsibility and preparing supplies and other pets at home. making sure that they can still be mfortable. >> reporter: and that's something you guys do h here. if ye a pet at home and
