new at midday, football players from the university of maryland come together this morning for one reason, to honor thei fallen teammate. after weeks of allegations and controversy, the message players are now hoping to send. we showed no care for the little ones. that's part of a letter released by pope francis thisorning addressing the church sex scandal. what he says about making changes. and it is a cloudy but cool day outside. i'll show you when the rain will arrive. and our chance for thunderstorms. that's all coming up.

>> announcer: news4midday starts now. >> hi, everybody. good morning. and welcome to news4 midd i'm angie orgoff. thisng members of the maryland football community came together to talk aboutteheir made jordan mcnair. players talked about how they will remember him. he died in june after heat stroke in a heme practice the month before. we are in college park with a look at what the players will do remember their teammate. nicole. reporter: players did n take questions this morning. they said they simply wanted to make a statement on jusjohow importanan mcnair was to this program. they say his spirit lives in them now, and they will honor him with every play and every snap. a strong showing by the university of maryland football players filing in to make a powerful statement. >> we come here today as

berkeley, hampshire, jefferson and morgan counties. parents there are hoping for an uninterrupted year after teachers had a strike last year. it took nine days to resolve that. in othernews, pope francis is confronting the since of the church in an unprecedented letter. it address last week's grand jury report on priest sex abuse sandals andcover-ups. the report found that more than 1,000 children were sexually abus by priests in pennsylvania for decades. the pope's letter is meant to acknowledge thing any of the victims and also the power of their stories. the pope writes, quote, the heart wremplging pain of these victims which cries out to heaven was longno d, kept quiet or silenced. nowent on to say we showed are for little ones, we abandoned them. the pope suggests that going forward the church adopt a zero tolerance policy. today cardinal donald whirl

smoke from the three huge wildfires out west in california traveled all the way to the east coast. to our area. it was carried over 3,000 miles by the jet stream. you are taking a look at some of the intense fires, the flames there that have been a burni meteorologist with the national weather service told the "washington post" that some ople in the area cou actually smell the smoke from california. the paper says there was actually an air quality alert. it was put out in the baltimore region last week for that smoke. soft of the wind and precipitation cleared things out here for us. e did not see the immediate effects, they arsaying. still, that is phenomenal to know. >> oh, enyeah. t travels up high enough in the atmosphere you have the jet stream up near where t
