their pay raises. we told u on friday when the president said he was nixingmp for most federal workers, he said those raises would crease the federal deficit, but the president heard criticism from both sides of the aisle. he said he'd take another look at the numbers over the holiday weekend. and we're lurching toward another potenal government shutdown. the government is funded until september 30th. president trump has threatened a unutdown if he doesn't receive moreng for a border wall with mexico. majority leader mitch mcconnell canceled most of the august recess in hopes of making progress on a deal. but perhaps the biggest show in this town starts morrow. confirmation hearings begin for brett kavanaugh. prident trump nominated him in july. e next judge could fundamentally change the court, because justice kennedy was off a critical swing vote.

and democrats are protesting several aspects of thison confirmatiprocess. they are focused on 100,000 cuments that they can't get. president trump is blocking the release of thoses, docume citing presidential privilege. justice correspondent pete wams ai williams explns the unique position kavanaugh is in and what else he thinks this hearing will be focusedon. >> reporter: it's an unusual situation, where you have somebody that has this large amount of paper trl. normally, in a confirmation ou hearing, expect the questions to be about his time on the d.c. court of appeals. het there will be a lot of questions about documents. i think if i had to choose one thing that is hearing will be about, i'd choose two things. abortion andf the question presidents can be indicted or even subpoenaed. cause brett kavanaugh's views on these questions have changed over time. when he was working foren starr on the whitewater investigation he said that he was very muscular about the kinds of questions and what w should be donh clinton.

now left without a mother. melissa lehew's body was found today. police say she was trying to save a driver trapped in flash flo, floodiut she was trapped into the rushing waters. this unfolding 30 miles east of baltimore. the suspect in murder is now locked up in a virginia jail. state police tracked down rodney conyers in suffolk, in southeastern virginia. they recognized his license plate down there. officers say conyers took off. he eventually crashed in a tunnel. ers is accused of killing his girlfriend at a home on south view drive in oxon hill, aryland, early yesterd morning. brittiney cobb was 26 years old. prin george's county police say they had argued before the attack. police say this crime appeared to haved invol domestic violence. we have a complete list of domesoic violence ces in our area on our nbc washington app, just search safe at home.

a terrifying moment today during all the labor day fun. a little girl did not come uphe from water at a public pool in northeast washington. news 4's jackie benson with how this scary moment turned into a miraculous rese. >> reporter: the langdon park pool on mills avenue in northeast d.c. was filled with children cooling off on a scorching labor day when one child, a 7-year-old girl, wen under. witnesses say she was from the bottom of the pool unconscious, appearing lifeless, just before 5:00 p.m. >> lifegud, they all came and did they job.or >> repr: as others were calling 911, theanool mer and assistant pool manager began

this week. no rain out there. we did see isolated showers, a couple of rumbles of thunder, but that was really it. we could see that again tomorrow, but they're very, very small, isolated showers. quick downpours and the storms re out of here let's look at the wider view here. this shows the pattern that we saw last week. chicago to atlanta, all clear. that's the area of high pressure moving around like this and inside that ah a of h pressure, that's where the heat builds. temperatures in the 90s alltoay day from d.c. right on back to st. louis and we're going to be he next heat through couple of days. down to the south, this is where the big story is right now. thca is tro storm gordon. came plus through miami, ft. myr this storm was getting itself together very rapidly, now kind of stalling just a little bit as far as the iensity goes, and that's good. we do not want to see it intensify, but it is expected to so. moving west-northwest at 17. that's a pretty fast-movingor on this track, and the intensity

forecast ahiually brings to a category 1 hurricane tomorrow evening at 8:00 eastern time. but right in towards portions of alabama, mississippi,ust east of new orleans. that would be good news for the city of new orleans. but storm surge flooding could be a big issue with this storm. we're goig to be watch that very closely. and then moving inland and quickly becoming a depression. now, another storm, tropical storm florence. florence, winds of 70 miles an hour. close to hurricane strength, moving west-northwest at14. this is way out in the atlantic. here's the u.s., here's bermud this is the next five days and it doesn't even come close to bermuda in five days. a lot of the storms, the computer models have this storm curving out to sea. that would be great news for the u.s. a however, the a couple that actually bring it back be-lowber mu day and towards the east coast into next year. so, that's what we' going to be tracking for you very closely. we know we're on top of it for you. 94 degrees the high tomorrow. hot and humid. isolated storm possible but most of us remaining on the dry
