home set on fire. darren wint the only spect arged so far. there's so much to discuss. i realize that last week you talked about the details in the case you uncovered several pieces of evidence unreported let's talk about the fires. >> so we knew that the mansions set on fire. that was initially how t call came out for law enforcement and firefighters was to this house i . the firefighters and the law enforcement quickly realized that the fire was set for a purpose and they believed that was to cover up the four homicides in this case. and so we knew there was that fire. we also knew very early on that there was a second fire. the family' foporsche was found several hours after the initial murder call went out so police had told eve to be on the
6:16 am
look for thi porschend then it turns up in prince georges county on fire. what we were i digging int the court file was another fire that we hadn't heard of before and it kept coming up like a dozen mentions. so we start digging into that to find out what the fire was about. it was a blue minivan that was ound in prince georges county also on fire in the days following the murder and we have come to learn that that was the defendant, daron wi nt's miniva. he was arrested a month and a half, just shy of two months prior to the murders. it was unregister sedo presumably he'll argue it wasn't his hevan. as driving it at the time so he was charged with driving it. it was a charge in d.c metro police and the tags were reported stolen out of prince georges county. >> we've als learned about the witness who saw the car after the murders? >> that refers to the porsche.
6:17 am
and this was a critical witness early on because police spoke to this individual who was stopped at a traffic light next to the porsche and noticed it because it's a beautiful kind of high-end car you wouldn't see on the road and paid attention to the driver and gave a report of someone -- and hiss report alw had the description as a thinner build which does not look like daron wint with close cut -g weomed hair and daron wint had dreadlocks. but we know over the summer when prosecutors were talking to this witness, presumably preparing for trial, he added another detail andha that was in the coverage of the case he saw a photo on television of jordan wallace, the driver of
6:18 am
savapolous. so now he added to his story and told prosecutors think he is this guy. who is a critical witness in the case because he divered the $40,000 ransom to the house and roscopen under the m although police never charged him with anything and did look at him. but this witness is presumably identified or said i think it's but then said my mind could be playing tricks on me. >> is there a second witness with a possible connection to wint? >> that's jordan wallace as b wellieve it or not. >> but one of the interesting hat there learned is may have been a lot of evidence that was missed. >> w found a document in which prosecutors acknowledged to the defehere is missteps in the case and that started on day one when the crime scene technicia i we there collecting the evidence, they acknowledged they did not collect water bottles and glove found at the scene because the kind of lead crime scene evidence pern was told that tse were used by
6:19 am
firefighters. experts have said they should have collected everything and then tested the firefighters and ruled out it was theirs so that ev if it was evidence was presumably left behind at the scene. there were waterotes in the upstairs bedroom where some of the iividuals were found and the answer to that was that refighters had taken water from the victims' refrigerator in the room a drank i and left the bottles. >> that sounds so -- unbelievable. >> we thought so, too. the experts we talked to said what it was there was ashein eyes and they immediately needed water. what p if they were about s out. fighting fires is tough work, you're wearing heavygear, you're hot, upstairs for hours putting out a fire. the otheras critical piece that urine was not tested from some of the there was urine from one toilet tes bud noed but not from other when she was asked she was told
6:20 am
firefighters used the toilet. >> so this adds up to what sounded like it might have been an open-and-shut case, an easy case, may not b after all. >> we talked to experts, law enforcement experts, prosecution experts and the defense expert. s on theecutor expe law enforcement side will tell you this isn't a huge deal. there is no such thing as a perfect case, no such thing as an open-and-shut case but they acknowledge that this could raise questions and the defenset ex called this a bombshell so it will be interesting to see how prosecutors explain this away and how theea defense says to the jury no, no, no, this will be important. >> this will bewo month long trial. for more details on this case and what law enforcement experts are saying, you can watch a news 4 special entitled "mansion murders, inside the investigation." log on to the nbc washington web site, nbc washington.com and

6:23 am
first -- first of all i can't believe it'sdeing built. he thing with the purple line is it's so close and person personal. it's literally in people's backyards, next to homes and businesses. weboe talking feet away so people are starting now as the construction has picked up to thatthe impact of we spoke to one woman who lives in east silver spring by silver avenue, lintonville, she is living with cancer, she istt ng breast cancer, she is -- works from home, she can'g leave but outside her window is this heavy construction and they'reil ng this new station right outside her window and she says from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. it's going around the clock. >>ere they giv any options for relocating during portions

of the construction or -- >> the state has notified people for years for homeowners who were getting notifications, so it's not like people didn't know but when you get into these specialized cases because a woman needs to stay home because's sicknd not physically well enough to move to a hotel for x number of months or whatever it may be, there are cases like this where it's going to be disruptive and in every transportation project you're to deal with some level of discomfort. there are people who want it, some people who don't. at this point in the construction, it's completely -- in montgomery county it's really being felt and people are stting to feel the impact. the state and the contractors say, sthough, that t fall a lot of that heavy, heavy work drilling into the ground, into the core, building tunnels, thal amp back a little bit. >> so there will be some relief. >> a little bit is whatst the

e is saying. never mind the fact that by 2022 there will be aun trainng next to your house. >> jodi, how would you like to live >>there? think of the typical not in my backyard but this takes it to a who new lev because you're talking about not just the n construction bt to trains for the foreseeable future. are they expecting to have noise underground from the trains once they exist or lots of people around that station and congestion in the area? this is something these neigors have been fighting for years and now they're not only having to watch itappen but they have this kind of annoyance of the loud noise. >> this is a case, again, in a lot of transportation projects you see this push back and forth d the projects get pushed through ultimately. >> the price of what some would call progress. >> yeah. slow down, you could be onp d.c. s cams, new and improved cams, that is. the old cameras are gone, the new ones popping up all over the district. they're part of a new crackdown on. speeding

6:28 am
they sploff, that is the choke point of the entire metro system and you have a lot ofns trhat are getting rerouted and going in different spots. what happened was this signal s malfunctioning and it wasn't giving the proper coding as to where the train should have gone so as you mentioned, two trains in two days went to the wrong ot now when people hear they went on the wrong tracks you think oh, my egosh, you'll h head on collision. it wasn't that at all. they were going in the same direction as another train would ve been going so yidn't have the potential of a collision, yet you had an inconvenience toiders who thought they were on one line and ended up at another line >> did i take them directly back to where they were going? >> no, they would have to get off thetrain, boa another train which in the middle of the day for metro can take 20 minutes to catch another train and go back so it was more of an convenience but it points to metro's aging infrastructure which is what we talked about to years and the need upgrade signals and switcoss at these ver points specifically. it's important where the
