i want to show you this. ta a look at all of these sandbags piled up here in old town. this givesou an idea of how inundated we have been with rain over the pastew days and weeks. everything coming our way will be hitting gund already saturated with water. take a look now. as you take a look at the preparations underway in parts of north carolina and south carolina and virginia too as well, certa areas preparing for more of the wind storm, going to take the brunt of the hurricane. others preparing, as chuck mentioned, if that storm stalls out and continuesllo dump of that rain we could see widespread catastrophic flooding. folks are preparing right now. we're a few hours away from evacuations getting started in virginia. the governor ordered the o evacuation a quarter of a million people from the eastern shore to virginia beach and

norfolk and the middle peninsula. he also requested about 21 rescueeams from other states. both he and the maryland governor both saye it's t to take this very seriously. take sk all virginians to all precautionary measures. start now to prepare you families and your homes for potential heavy rains, ndwind, possible flooding. >> governor hogan for his part, he put the national guard on alert. he hasn't ordered a evacuations as of yet but he's still tracking that storm because a lot of this is going to depend, not on just where it hits, the eye of the storm, buta does it out? does it track north and stall out? because that could bring very s vere flooding. we'll bring you more on this throughout the hour. >> thank you.

>> now we t knowt hurricane florence strengthened quicken. in 24 hours it went from being a tropical storm to a category 4 hurricane. >> take out these images of the stmm taken f space. you can see howell formed the hurricane is. the eye in the thmiddle. images were taken by ricky arnold on board thern inteional space station. now let's check in with sheena tracking theon lateshe storm's path. >> you notice how on the satellite image you see one eye but now as we're looking at the storm, which is a categor 4 hurricane, it almost appears as if there could be two eyes. could be undergoing an eye wall replacement which is typical of major hurricanes. this is a category 4. it's moving to the west northwest at 15 miles per hour so it's moving at a pretty average speed for a hurricane, but look what happens when it moves on land now. the cone has just updated as of the 5:00 a.m. advisory, but notice howll it r slows down.

this is going to be friday into saturday now. as it, slows do this is not good news for the carolinas because thatll means it's going to do is sit there and dump a lot of rain. could be devastating flooding in these sections with the major hurricane hitting land. high pressure to the north though will continue to keep this thing f to our south. the track has been very consistent here. if it continues to stay farther to our south less rain and wind in the forecast if it heads farther to our north that'seehat we'll as far as higher chances of heavy rain and wind. look at the computer models. they're all over the place once this makes landfall. that will determine when we see ou heavyrain. >> thank you. jim handly is on his way to north carolina to cover hurricane florence for us. he'll start filing reports on evacuations tonight and bring us live coverage as florence comes ashore later thi week. >> florence is still a few days away from impacting the east

11th attacks still ring true for those that lost family and members on that day. we know in a few hours mike pence will be on hand here for a ceremony here at the pentagon, but we have seen tributes emerging across our well.s as perhaps you have seen the large flags draped over towers along route 110. 17 years ago today more than80 people were killed when american airlines flight 77 crashed into the western wall of the pentagon and we do know that very soon, about 6:47 this morning, a sunrise ceremony will take place. it will present t large flag draping it over that hole that was there 17 years ago once that flight crashed into the western wall of the pentagon. it's happened every year since to commemorate the actions taken and a show of service, a show of unity,oration, of strength and resolve on what happened on 11 and we remember

this which which is a good reminder. get the latest on weather and traffic on the road. a category orm. hardest hit will be north carolina and south carolina and virginia. those are the tee states most in the bulls eye, particularly north carolina. la landfall likely to come late thursday ght. wever our impacts here locally may not ramp up until saturday and could linger into tuesday of next week. our main threat will be devastating flooding depending m on where the nants of the storms gofter rainfall. the agreement brings a category 4 storm somewhere ono the southeast coast of north carolina late thursday night. where disagreements starts in the forecast models is what happens after that. some models have the stormer lig along the north carlina-south carolina bor from thursday night until saturday.

that would be catastrophic flooding onhe carolina coastline and then some models bring the remnants farther west toward atlanta and the western carolinas and some have it farther to the north. that's where the uncertainty is. that's why we haven't had a lot of confidence for our local impact and the timing beyond thursday night and friday. this is going to be a huge onproblem for a period of time. i was reading through one of the inrance industry trade organizations and they think $20 billionbe disaster across the carolinas and virginia. that's serious stuff. locally for today, a little round of showers here coming on northbound. grab the umbrella before you leave home toy. your rai chances today stand at 40%. not an all day rain out. a veryoggy start this morning and mostly cloudy day today and tomorrow a little warmer the next couple of days and then we'll have to see on friday and satur how much rain and the timing of it from florence. now let's go over to melissu, >> thank chuck.
