>> it's really hu i mean this is a massive problem. we talk about the opioid epidemic, and all the people who are dying from that, that is way crushed by the number of people who are dyiach day from suicide. it's like 50% more are dying from suici than from opioids. >> what's causing this increase? >> you know, we don't really know. my guess and this is just a guess, i don't have data to back this up, i think the oneing we have to look at for younger people because suicide rates are up for all ages and all demographics, for younger people in particular, i think social media is playing a role. u're a vulnerable kid, you already are sensitive about how e doing socially, comparing yourself to others, don't feel good about that and then go nd on-linelook at people who are seemingly having a better y life than can push the vulnerable person over the edge. >> and you say if you talk about suicide, you have to talk about death.e lain that. >> two-thirds of all gun deaths in this country are suicide. people who are gun their

house are five times more likely to die from suicide. suicide for many can be an impuiveact. when you use guns, your chances of dieing are 95%. when you compare that to a more common type of suicide attempt hich is overdosing on pills, only about 2% or 3% will die when they do that. guns are used in 5% of suicide attempts but account for over 50% of actual suicide deaths. you really want to find out if somebody ngu care about is go through a mental health crisis and they happen to haveheuns in house, you want to say look, i'm really worried about you, do weyou find if give the guns to somebody else, just get them out of the house for a little while until things are going better for you. it's not permanent, but we're worried and because suicide can be something you're not thinking about for a long time, like a vulnerable moment, ion't want to have a gun in the house where you can utilize it in those

vulnerable states. >> so a couple things.ke you tabout somebody having a mental health cris, are those people more likely to plan it out and think it through and if you know somebody what should you do? >> you know, a lot of people ve will thoughts and plan it out in advance. there are denitely a large number of people who do that. they'll talk about it and make statements topeople, give things away, et cetera. my experience in 20 years of doing this, is all my patients for the mo part who have made suicide attempts it's an impsive act. an example, i just had a patient this weekend who jumped off the 11y st of his building. thank god he hit something on the way down, shatter his body, but lifkds lived. i talked to him. what was going on. i hadn't been thinking about suicide but i was thinking about my ex who broke up with me and had a couple drinks and in lesse than f minutes he's jumping. it is scary which brings me to

one other point i wnt to make, if somebody calls you and they're drunk or high and they're tsuking aboutide, you know, you might be on the receiving end of that and think, you know what, they're drunkr high, just talking nonsense, sleep it off. no. that is when that person is much more vulnerable and likely because their inhibitions are down. that is the time you want to say i'm worried about you, i'm coming o ser. juething to think about. >> good point. thanks so much as always, dr. winer for that insight. >>ll right. good information. thanks, guys. we have told you about the efrt to geople to evacuate the carolina coast because of hurricane florence. we're also hearing aut the effort to get animals to saf ground. we're going to explain coming up. apple showing off new products today. the announcement could include a money saver. we'll explai n.
