we have some breaking news. we just learned president trump is expected to travel to the disaster zone sometime next week. the white houseis says travel will not disrupt rescue efforts. meantime, our team coverage continue in virginia beach. the city dodged the worst of floren. but it isow dealing with some tidal flooding. >> reporter: as soon as folks in the hampton roads region saw that florence was hding farther south, away from them,le of them breathed sigh of relief. the concern has been flooding. tidalooding in particular. and we're seeing it in certain areas of norfolk, virginia. this is called the head. it is knowno flood. but add to that some tropical storm conditions including some rain coming edown, s stronger winds, potentially some surge coming through and that's wt creates this. several feet of water over some of the streets here. it is for this reason that they were warning people throughout the n storm to rest assured

and2011 in germantown and gaithersburg. a one case he broke int senior living home and raped ana 86old woman. detectives are combing through other unsolved assaults to see if he is responsible for other crimes. also, the fmer campaign chairman paul manafort has pleaded guilty in court and maybe even more itically, has agreed to cooperate with the special counsel's russia investigation. scast mcfarland more on the plea deal and what this means. >>ood afternoon. he gives the special counsel a key cooperator. it must cooperate fully with the government. that means he agreed to testify in any proceeding and federal district and he can be interviewed by federal agents or government attorneys. manafort's sentence wi depending on his cooperation and the level of his cooperation. the 69-year-old was convicted la month of eight financial crimes in a snarate trial i alexandria. he faces seven to ten years in

oy oh boy the carolinas are just getting pummeled. at you're seeing here, this is myrtle beach, south carolina. this monster storm is moving so slowly. nt is dumping unimaginable amounts of r causing catastrophic flooding along the way. miguel martinez valle continues ene coverage. >> reporter: resid are hoping the damage is not quite as bad. you can see the wind has picked up a little bit and i can tell

that you there is a police check point for those coming in. they are only letting those who live here in. this gas station is one of many places boarded up. these cars areeo for pe who lived closer to the beach but they are parking here because it is an elevated area. they want to make sure their cars are safe from flooding. more businesses blockade up, board up. aot of people in this area have leaded the evacuation that's people have been calling for since monday. some residents t me they are not leaving. they say they've been watching the storm. now tha it is a category 1, they're going to brave it. theajority of people are not taking chance. they are watching and playing it safe. i can tell you, they went to one of the0 shelters around south carolina. so 40 shelters, thousands using the shelters and authorities say that's the safest way to go.

wilmington, north carolina, is now the scene of the first deaths. a mher and child are the first ones killed from the storm. rescuers are working to help people tram in the flooding and people are doingca what the including celebrity chef jose andres. he tweeted these pictures of his team up meals for first responders and people in shelters. they have two truck loads of food and supplies. enough to serve me than 100,000 meals. ofhe's made hundreds thousands of meals in puerto rico. >> good for him. >> a live report in abo 45 minutes. less than an hour ago. they're still getting pounded there. >> the eye came through right over whiming. a lot of wind damage. now it is the rain that we'rr d about. we have a fourth person that has died and we'll continue the see the dates as we move on

through. hopefully, all the responders will get to people how stayed. even though flooding was predicted. that's t number one killer, storm surge. and then inland flooding, number two. we've gothat going on right now. take a look at the video. this is just south ofgt wilm. so you had a little bit ofn offshore flow but you stillad the storm surge coming up hitting these homes. this is the carolina beef. you see the ocean meeting the roadway as well. and this is the scene all up and down the coast of the carolinas. especially in towcad north lina. take a look at the picture. you see the satellite picture. this shows you just how large this system is of it extends from d.c. all the wayown to savannah, georgia. if you make drive, that's a ten-hour drive. amazing how long it would take you t mak that drive. now if you tried, you could not do it.

here's the eye of the storm, the center portion of it. these extremely heavy bands. this is whereheeaviest is. i want to show you how much rain it is. you can see the center. look at the bands. look at that moisture coming. in how much so far? 14.3 inches. right around new bern which is seeing so much in the way of storm surge. over ten feet of water in new bern, north carolina. about a foot of rain in wilmington. we're getting started with thef rainll. here's new bern. we've seen so much of it. 150 people were waiting to be rescued as a result of the flooding from the river coming in from the ocean.

even around our region, we've gotnd some showers thunderstorms to the south. currently a 75-mile-an-hour hurricane. it will be aropical storm very quickly. only moving at six miles an expected to be a hurricane by later tonight into tomorrow. and here's tomorrow evening at 8:00. 40-miles-per-hour. it goes from a hurricane to 40-mile-per-hour depression very, very quickly. and then it also moves quickly. rain from this on tuesday. monday night into tuesday and it could beid coable. especially in the western zones. around d.c. today, just cloudy, cool, 20-mile-per-hour winds. we do have some rain in our southern zones. around fredericksburg, saint mary's county. most of us have continued to remainn the drive side. we've been talking about it all week. flooding coastal flood warnings

florence to make way over the washington region next week. susan hogan is here with some information that you need on protect your home, your finances and your car. >> it is too early to say what the flooding potential will be here, the time to prepare is right now. so let's get right to four things do you know thikend to keep the rain outside where it belongs. so elevate. your appliances, furniture, everything up off the ground. especially critical, utilities such assy heating ems. it is recommended to use cindier blocks or plastic crates. and don't forget to get your car etay from lower areas. call and it done. a working sump pump is critical. it is always a good idea to install a back-up battery or a generator. clear debris from your gutters. the leaves haven't really started to fall but still check all of your gutters.
