they suffered to 12 foot storm surge. the next high tide is11:45 tonight. if you can pan off me, this is e river out here. that building right behind me has a first floor tha is almost completely covered. those are medical offices on the first thr floors there. above that building, condominiums, people to have spraek building. if y pan to the left, you can see all the empty boat slips. people were scurrying yesterday to get them to dry dock. that bridge there is a major roadway that will get you into new bern, north carolina. the scene of so many rescues. we have seen rescues here, too, north carolina. i want to bring up if we can our storm tea 4 by 4. one of the biggest challenges is getting around this town. we have a very tough time.ro e dve in from the coast. it said wre two minutes away but it took half-hour because we hadllo dodge of these roads.

hurricane florence is pound the state with heavy rain and wind. and we are looking at the damage. the cars areunrwater. power lines are down. homes are damaged ther overflowed its banks. the national guard quickly sprang into action going out and rescuing people from their homes this morning. so far at least rescues have been made. we'll have another update on that from jim handly.

he's in wagton, north carolina, a little bit away from that area. >> right now, the marines didn't evacuate and they are ready to help. >> the key thing here, the marine, the navy, none of the tidal ten companies, the department of defense, army, air force, navy and marines, none them can do anything unt t whyat they do to get ready, the pre stage a lot of vehicles close to the water so these amphibious assault vehicles, they call them tracks. they look like big alligators, they can go in the water, out of e water, that gives them ability to help across the carolinas.

five daysanago. extremely good and extreme had you well forecast ed storm here. you can see the storm center. down around myrtle beach, myrtle beach on the south side so they're getting the offshore flow. all the storm surge will come with the flow onshore. some of thereas hit the hardest, up around the more head city area, 20 inches o rain down around wilmington,too. wilmington along the cape fear iver, now at record flood levels. and the rain just started. it made its way throughow and they'll see the fresh water coming down the river. they saw i coming from the

offshorend in it is blowing the water up into our area. so again, we are seeing in thel north ca area, this happening. you're getting the storm surge and this water hashe n to go. it is flowing from the atlantic into the rivers that doug was talking about. the cape fear river. up by new bern. they overloaded with water. so it spills out into the tributaries. this is where we have some deadly situations. this is only going to continue as i along the carolina. >> the rivers will come up because of the rain right through tuesday into wednesday of nt week. for us, tuesday happens to be the day that we see the remnants. monday into tuesday. we could see a couple inches back to the west. i'm not too worried about it. sunday is not a bad day for tns redsgame. one thing we all need, sunshine. we finally get itate next

w keeping a close eye on storm florence. a suspected serial rapist is off the streets after years of breaking into women's homes and violently attacking them. in one case he raped an 86-year-old woman in an assisted living facility. rek ward h new details about how they tracked him down. >> repter: police say marlon michael alexander broke into an apartment and tried to assault a woman. she fought him off and he ran. that was in august of 2007. pvestigators with the montgomery countice department say alexander was beginning a dangerous and brazen string of sexual attacks. >> theec sus dna was recovered. >> reporter: that would be his undoing. would it link him to three other

sexual assaults in 2010 and 11. two of those assaults on the same victim, about a year apart. other on an 86-year-old woman in an assisted living facility across theet st each time police say he left dna at the scene of the ime. a company would crack the case. they had the rights to a family member's dna. how did they get it? >> there are a lot of services that people use now to, i guess, look at their family history. >> reporter: your gentle fingerprint becomes part of the public record. the same dna was used. a distant relative in georgia recovered the case in montgomery county. an 11-year-old cold case got hot quickly. >> an officer who got interested in doing the family history w le to identify mr. alexander. >> reporter: they got a wardnt

tropical storm florence is being referred to as it slogs through the carolinas. reporting five people are now dead. a mother and her baby among the first victims killed when a tree fell on to the home if wilmington. the situation is quite dangerous. >> wendy, that was the key word she used, slog. the miles an hour. >> they're not out of the woods yet. >> human walks three miles an hour. when it is dumping rain over and over again, this satellite

showing how effective this storm is. the clouds all the way from philadelphia toward savannah, georgia. an incredibly large storm. take a look at where this storm on the radar picture. here's wilmington, north carolina. it came onshore right here 12 hours ago. about 11 hours ago. now it is right there again. hours and hours and hours of extremely heavy rainfall including an area around newbe rn along the nuese river. jimhand l in washington, north carolina. into seen it first hand that area and you know how bad was south of you around new bern. >> reporter: you're exactly right. this is the pamlico river. the sound is upriver behindme. it is blowing in brackish salt water from florence and the ocean. they saw storm surge from 10 to overnight. this is an area they call the

historic district. their promenade. cars park here. there is a sidewalk that you walklong theiver here. i can tell you, since i game 2:30, there is a top of a trash it. bj, if you can see you congress that was a trash can from where i am now. it is almost completely submerged. we got a lot of good pictures today. let's look aof som them. people who were stranded and being rescue the national guardsmen were out. ey were in monday tune boats going door to door through various neighborhoods. it was tough to go down streets. so many streets blocked off. because of high waters. we saw a number of submerged cars. some cars just floating down the streets. out andaw some kayakers about checking on their neighborsful that's really the only way to gun a in some neighborhoods. it is very tough and it may be

re more cameras coming to more school buses after the arrest of a bus driver accused sexually assaulting a special needs student. >> reporter: good evening. the county is speeding up its plans t equip every bus with a camera after the shocking arrest of the bus driver last month. you might remember the story, he was charged with a more th dozen counts of sexual known as mr. steve by some students, police stay assault s captured on a school bus camera. tonight, school districts officiay they're speeding up the plan to have more cameras. they expect to have every specialon educa bus equipped by january and all buses by june and they're looking to see if they can have more memory on the

around the carolinas. gabe gutierrez is in myrtle beach but we'll start with akmariana in island, north carolina. >> reporter: now we're seeing the flooding that we've been predicting near the beach. i want to show to you my left, for exple, these streets, these mailboxes, you can see. i want my camera man to pan to my left, how high the water has risen in some streets. v it iy hit or miss but it is what we've been talking about. as we keep getting pounded by this rain, this flooding is what we're going to continue to see. it is what many residents who left the island feared about not teing able to come back. i was j on the mayor of oak island and she said bh bridges will remainlosed so nobody can get on or off the islandt the moment. we're starting to see treeson fl top of some cars and some

that's 900 miles. the rain, the heaviest rain is abou 300 miles wide and encompasses the entire state of north carolina. the storm surge was anue i the center is now passing to the north of myrtle beach and look the flow. it is offshore. very good news for them. yes, they did see the storm surge. to the north, this is where the storm surge is and this is whirt has been bad the ente time. upwards of 18, 19, 20 inches of rain. around new bern, the morehead area, and we'll continue to sight around jacksonville, too. look at this rain band. right there, very hvy rainfall. the four inches per hour into some of these. where is th storm going? tropical storm, winds of 70 miles an hour moving west at three miles an inhour. the no, longer a huge
