4 today on this saturday morning. good morning to you. >> good morning. thank you for joining us. we are continuing to follow the affects of now tropical storm florence. we know that so fareven people ve died from the storm. we have jim down there tracking itor f us. first, we want t check in with lauren rickets in the weather center. good morning, lauren. >> good morning, meghan and david. we're looking at some very- a very dire situation still ongoing in eastern north carolina and south carolina. right now we're on the very northern edge of any clo that is coming through florence. a lot of this coming from the cean, the atlancean with this easterly flow we're getting. we have the winds com off the atlantic. it brings moisture and brings it into here in the form of cloud cover. we've seeing that and drizzle. we get saturated and i forms in drizzle. a few out there right now.

here's the outer most band of rain toward the richmond area of florence. look at this. it's now tropical storm windst miles per hour. heavy rain continueses to move over the same areas. we tl look att in a few minutes. otherwise know it's going to be breezy out there todaynd tomorrow. temperatures low 70s and headed to around eighty for dtime highs today. anything this weekend, the outdoo parties for the weekend, tomorrow and today going to be very silar. redskins game looking good. we'll talk about the latest track in the 10-day, how florence is affecting usoming up. >> we'll check in with you enth. fl has been deadly, and it's knocked out power for more than 1 million people along the coast. system. a slow-moving expected to dump up to 40 inches of rain. >> wendy is in wilmington, north carolina. wendy, what can you tell us about the deaths? this is a deadly and dangerous

storm here. >> it certainly is. david, meghan, good morning to you once agai unfortunately i'm coming to you with some sad news that that death toll has risen toseve seven people have lost their lives as a direct result of florence. she made land fall 26 hours ano, she is refusing to release her gp here. >> florence punishing the carolinas with wind and rain as she crawls down the coast. in her wake, storm surge putting towns like newburn under 10 feet of water. >> it was horrifying. just wondering what's going onhe and where water is going to go and how high it's going to go and how we are going to get out. >> those rescues with good outcomes. in wilmon, a rescue effortbe came a grim recovery after a tree fell on a home kilng a mother and her infant.

>> charles county fire and ems sending a team to help them in their relief effort. we have derek ward joining us from waldorf with more on this mission. tell us about it, derek. >> good morning. again, we're here at station 3 in waldorf. wi me is bill smith. he's the spokesperson for the fire department. you said 11 folks are heading down theredi we're s 12 volunteers from the waldorf fire station here and the benedict fire station. there's a class a pumper and three personnel. from this station we're sending down threerush trucks, a tanker equipped with 3,000 gallons of water and atility truck for the logistics part of the mission. >> how i important is when you get this kind of assistance from this far away? >> it's great. we are very happy to do so. we had a call from fema and fema asked for assistance from our

volunteers in the county. we completed all the necessary paperwork. our county fire chief was i instrument getting that portion of the mission finished. the guys are nowp gearing and they're getting ready to head south. they'll be leaving at 10:00 this >> the folks in charlottes county needn't worry aboutdi nished service. >> we reached out to all the 17 departments here in our country. we're fully staffed. no service will be diminished because of of the activity we're going to carolina. >> inderstand you're going to station somewhere away from all the flooding so you can best mobilize once it's needed? >> we're heading to raleigh, trth carolina to the staging area at base camp there. we're going to get orders from there. butur primary mission is to do stuff thaty normahe local volunteer departments down there cannot do because they'rest ssed out with the storms. we'll take care of the fire suppression and things of that

nature in that area. >> excellent. thank you for talking to us this morning. thank you for sending those folks down. they'll be leaving at0:00 and we'll bring you some of that later today on news 4. right now we're live in waldorf. back to you.ha derek, you. another crew from maryland is arriving in north carolina tomorrow. maryland heart, helicopter akwa c rescue team is sending two black hawk helicopters. >> rescuers in the water is very dangerous, so this allows us to get in quickly with a vy capable aircraft and crew and rescue the victims quickly. the crews should be there about five days in total. if more help is needednother member from montgomery county will be sent down there. >> a rash of overdoses i wreaking havoc on the district. health officials believe at pl least five p have died from overdoses since thursday. a medic treated at least 47 people were overdoses in the

same time period. health officials believe the victims overdose on the synthetic drug called k-2 also known as spice. most of the overdoses happen near organizations that served homeless people. according to d.c. fire and ems, there have been more than 1,000 ovdoses in the past two months. to politics now. president trump's former campaign chairman is coote with the russia ination, in particular the special counsel. that isart of paul manafort's plea deal. he admitted guilt to tax fraud, money launders and other crimes. special counsel robert mueller gets full access to the man who led the trump campaign for a crucial stretch of time during the 2016 presidential race. >> and for political junkies looking for plans next month. ickets for the second annual meet the press film festival are sale right now. e festival is on monday,

from the st. 60 miles east, the bands are coming in from. we arerm under surge right now and in a lot of inland areas before the rivers peak, it could be thursday or friday of next week. this area right where we are, little washington, north carolina around greenville and newburn. they saw 10 to 12-foot surges on this river right here. that was a day ago. we showed you this area wch was muc higher last night. we just cameut of low sitide. we're dealing with the ocean surnls and we've got the rain coming in still. bands, and in the daysahead, they've got to worry about upper inland coming from places like raleigh and west of us, bringing in more water into these rivers here which areoing to continue to rise. people have been told to stay away at least throu monday or tuesday from this area right

where we are now. if they did come back likely they wouldn't have power. 60% o this region is without power right now, and i will tell you throughout the state of north carolina, it'pi t 750,000 people so far. almost 1 million if you include south carolina. again the tragedy in all of this, we have added two more people to our fatality list. seven now in north carolina and south caro. i want to let you know we've talked about the power outages. we've seen a number of evacuations a those evacuations had to be by pontoon we have national guard troops in newburn, abo5es minut away. we sawrs neighbo checking on neighbors in kayaks yesterday. it's been one of those types shen communities come together. there were hundred of boats out here three days ago. they have been dry docked. this whole area was und water to that railing.

hat's the river walk at low tide. that gives you an idea of what exactly we're expecting throughout t area. they'll be back at 6:00 and 11:00. >> perfect. >> i'll talk to you at 6:00.do will be with everyone at 11:00. i want to talk about thesutorm e real iquick. devastating do there. from 1963 to 2012, there is almost 600 cyclones in the atlantic. the one killery half was storm surge flooding. storm surgelooding this is how it happened. this is exactly what was going on with jim. you could see the windst were coming off the water. we get this easterlylow in the atlantic. it comes off and brings all that water fm the atlantic in to the rivers, and the tributaries in

in. we get t storm surf three, six, nine, ten feet is enough to cover a house. and they're having storm surge up to eight feet. right n it's 3 to 4 in the storm surge warningsecause of the low tide. with high tide, this is where jim was right there. again, we are going to continue to see coastal flooding as we go over the nt couple of days. around our area even if it's not raining, we're going to have some coastal flood and it's been like this since last weekend passed nants of gordon through the area. it could not be rainy and we could still have coastal communities flooded. and the reason why and reason why we're seeing the breezy winds? it's because of florence. area of low pressure. the winds wrap around this counterclock wise. high pressure blocks everything. wind around this are clock wise. the flow is to the east. and we are right here. we get that easterly flow. same deal with us.

that's why we have coastal flood warnings for mary county. we see throuti bre getting coastal flooding because we've t this easterly flow pushing the water in from the atlantic to the potomac and the tribut y tributari what we're looking at. again, here is jim. the heavy rain rolled through, the heaviest rain south. and also down here toward wrightville and wilmington. the reinforcing shots of rain continue becauselorence is not moving. two miles an hour. maybe that's . have a few light sprinkles right now. we may have some sunshine if you're north. if you're south, we'll be stuck in a cloud cover. uthere's the edge of that cloud cover. the outer edge of the rain bands are south. we gathered the moisture fe atl in the form of fog, clouds and what we're seeing.

florence's track, it's tropical storm. winds are 15 miles per hour. itnu will con tond m over the south carolina state and the northeast quadrants so big. we'll have flooding all the way through centralor nth carolina. it rolls up through charlotte where they could get ten inches of rain it hugs around the west virginia border and comes to the northeast towardss maine a rem innocent low. but all of this moisture has go somewhere. we're going to have the effects from florence felt in our area throughout the weekend but mainlyda monday tu here we go. a few light showers here and there as we continue through the dapo of sunshine possible. especially if you're north of d.c.l weo this all again tomorrow. we'll have rain here and there. cod be heavy. especially as we get to tomorrow night. that's when the remnants start turn north. that's when we start to see the heavy rain pushing to the north and east.

now, the heaviest rain looks to ne up to the west of d.c. because that's going to be closer to the center of circulation closer to the remnants of northern. current temperatures out there right no not bad. 60s and 70s. headed to around 80 today. it's going to breezy at times. we could have gu miles per hour. it's not a let's talk about monday and tuesday. especially for my friends in the shenandoah valley. this is what we're talking about. winchester through front royal mond tuesday, possible heavy rain. leesburg, culpeper, those areas moderate rain for the track of florence for monday and tuesday. but around the d.c. area colombia, the d.c. metro area showers and coastal flooding is the same for st. mary's county and areas in southern maryland. >> i think right getting word there's a press conference regarding fema. >> theemnants of florence make

their way into the southern and central appalachians,iversnd streams flowing out of the mountains will experience moderate to major flooding. the details of this will become more clear early next week. rivers will stay in flood stage for an extended period of time. the next update from the national hurricane center will be issued at 11:00 eastern time. >> good morning. noaa is moving into response and recovery mode. the weather service forecast office in this particular area of north carolina and south carolina have been dealing with some significant flash flooding. i'dike to take this opportunity to extend my deepest appreciation and gratitude toward the c hurricaneter and the weather icservice, paarly the mother head city and wilmington officers.vi inals have been sheltered in place for many days but the offices have remained
