i'm aaron gilchrist. >> and i'm eunth yang. morning, both officers are in the hospital and expected to survive. >> justin finch joins us live from the scene with details. what can you tell us? >> reporter: that's right. at this time we're hearing those officers are in the hospital right now. at least oneould be on h way to surgery. here on the scene, still seeing a heavy policeresence. officers in uniform, others in plainlothes. crime scene investigators also here on the scene, as you can see behindwe me. e still looking at a very active police-involved shooting as you mentioned, nine officers were initially on scene last vight, part of a special operations team s a warrant to a top-level apartment here off the 2700 block. we're told they knocked on that apartment door, announced themsees, and got no answer, so the had to use a device to open that door. inside, they found arm maned with a shotgun. we're told he then fired at the

officers, str oing two them, one in the shoulder, the other in the hand and arm area. another officer then fired back at that suspect. we do not believe he was struck. a medic was also on that team and was able to begin very quickly some life-saving efforts in time to get those two officers helicoptered to a trauma hospital in baltimore. that quick response, police now say, they are hoping wl help those officers in their recovery. >> one of them is in serious condition. again, we could be talking about a completely different situation based on wt they encountered when they got into that apartment. so we arer very, very, v relieved tonight that both of our officers are alive. >> reporter: and as you heard there, a very close call. looking now on the scene here, officers still here on the scene investigating, crime tape still up. at this time, we do not have a i.d.s on those officers or the

near the building on fifth street southeast. megan, what are you seeing today? >> ranorter: well, iell you that the fire is out, but you do still smell this acrid sent of smoke. it's just kind of hanging in the area. although, the smoke itself is no longer pouring out of the building. now, they are just bringing in a new shift of some emergency equipment in here to keep an eye on things just to make sure we don't haveny h spots, any flare-ups. this one an -- was an enormous fire with flames traveling across the attic, sending huge plumes of smoke into the area.ne atoint, the roof collapses in one section of the building. the structure is made of brick, so the sides are all intact. but tha roof area is made of wood. at one point, it just gave yowa. can see it there.

now, the senior apartments, home to many elderly w residenh mobility issues, so they're dependent on walkers andee hairs. that made for a very challenging evesuation. manyents say they never heard fire eyalarms. th were alerted by people banging on their doors and the smell of smoke. the evacuation here truly a group effort. of course,he fire department wasad involved, m several rescues, but also00bout 1 marines from the nearby navy yard ran over to help. theyent into the building as it was burning and literally carried some residents out. they also grabbed wheelchairs to assist others with mobility issues. so really truly a groupff eort here. 161 units were evacuated. four people taken to a hospital, but we're told they are going to be okay. there are reports that the smoke detectors did not go off. that'll be a big part of this investigation. >> the fire marshals office and

the fire investigators will try to determine if and when the fire alarm system was not working. fire alarm systemsave batte backups. a lot of things go wrong. we do not have the answer to that. >> reporter: so a lot of damage to this building, and the fire marshals are going to be going in later on today, taking a look at things, trying tout figure first of all what caused the fire and secondly whether those smoke detectors and spring lkle were working. many residents have been taken to a nearby rec center. they're working with the red cross and other agencies to figure out more permanent situations for them. certainly an ongoing investigation. we'll bring you the latest coming up later on. back to you. >> megan mcgrath, thank you. d aaron, you were down in that area covering the story forin u he evening. how did you first spot what was going on? >> so i live over there. i've lived over there most of

the eighyears i've beenere in d.c. just going home yesterday afternoon at 3:30, you could see the smoke coming from that building. then sudnly thisuge fire department presence. i parked my car and jumped out and ran the few blocks to meet a arriving ar who was the same time. i've driven by this building a hundred times livinre over t to see it go up in smoke the way it did and to see these flames -literally, you think about this building, it's sort of four buildings aoncted. there's a courtyard in the middle, as i've been told. you watched that fire jump from one part of the building to the other until it got to that last sction we saw crumbling. just an awfne to watch. so grateful for the firefighterr who there, both from d.c., from the naval district, prince then those young marines who -- one marine told me they were in literally thr residents over their shoulders and carrying them out of that building. le scene inincred every way you look at it. >> megan mentioned it was such a

group effort. it's now 4:08. much more coverage of this fire ahead on "news 4 today." we'll see more remarkable footage and hear about these incredible rest'es. a story that's rocked the entire district. a woman killed at random in the logan circle neighborhoo w this morni know more about who she was. wendy martinez wasle stabbed w she was jogging near 11th and e street northwest tuesday night. a small memorial is growing in honor of she was a georgetown grad who was just engaged a week she worked at a data management firm. after she was stabbed, she stumbled into a nearby restaurant. customers tried to help, but it was too late. now take a look. this is the man police looking for. he was caught on surveillance footage just moments before the attack wearing a mustard colored shirt. another shot shows the knife still in his hand. coming up in our next hour, we'll get more detail on this

investigation. happening now in prince william county, neighbors of a belovedandyman are pledging for the driver who hit and forward.m to come a county park ranger saw alvyi smith l in the middle of route 1 tuesday evening. before the ranger could check on him, a man drivi a blue car hit smith. the driver stopped to che for damage and then took off. wednesday, alvin smith's loved ones brought flowers to the spot where he died. >> that's somebody's son, somebody's father. you just left him there like he was nobody, like he didn't have anybody. >> police say it's possible the driver of the blue vehicle didn't know he hit a peon. itsn't clear why smith was lying in the road. ten minutes after the hour now. there are new details about the supreme court confirmation controversy. the lawyer for the woman accusing brett kavanaugh of sexual assault wants additional witnesses to testify as well. right now only two people are set for monday's hearing. judge kavanaugh and his accuser,

your time is now 4:17. police are wking to find out more about two major shooting cases. >> the first happened in a municipal building in pennsylvania about 50 miles southtsf prgh. a man who was scheduled for a hearing on charges of domestic violence blasted through the front door. witnessesay heppeared to be chasing a woman. three people were injured before the shooter was killed by police. one officer was shot but is expected to be okay. thr w othersere hurt when a manpened fire on his co-workers in wisconsin. this happened at a softwe mpany outside of madison. like the shooting in pennsylvania, this man was also killed by police. the three people hurt are expected to survive.
