good morning, everyone. i'm aaron gilchrist. >> and i'm eun yang. both police officers are expected to survive. >> justin finch is live with the latest details. it still busy out there. >> reporter: hey there, ron, eun. you're absolutely right, still busy out here. but a sense of relief those injuries to the officers appear toe non-li threatening. here on the ground, officers are still at work, proof this investigation is continuing at this time. here's a look at what w know so far. we have two officers wounded, the second houlder, officer suffering a wound to his arm and hand areaar they were of a special operations team serving a warrant to a top-level apartment here about 10:30 last night at this apartment complex. we're told they knocked on the door, annnced emselves, but could not get inside, so they used a device to open thatdoor. here's what happened next. >> there is an individual inside the apartment armed with a

shotgun. that individual fired that shotgun at our nine-man team of officers. two of our officers are t. >> reporter: so a close call there, as you heard. that shooting suspect has nurrendered, we are told. a second person that apartment is also now in police custody. it is unclear, though, if either was the target of ttht warrant were trying to issue yesterday. both officers were taken by helicopter to a shock trauma hospital in baltimore, where they're now beingreated. we're live here in prince george's county, justin finch, news 4. >> justin, thank you. we're also following two other big stories this morning. >> a senior apartment complex in southeast turned into an inferno, giving elderly residents just minutes to escape. the roof caved in as firefighters, first responders, and marines ran to help. news 4's megan mcgrath is live on the scene this morning. plus, on the run. we're following the search for a man who killed a local jogger

residents are displaced. news 4's megan mcgrath is live near the building on 5th street southeast. n, what are you learning about the residents this morning? >> reporter: well, those who didn't go home with family members, they're being housed temporarily at a nearby rec center until aer more pnent housing situation can be worked out. if you look behind me, you can see the fire isot out. we're seeing smoke any longer. you can see all of the crews still on the sce keeping a watch over things. this was a huge fire. take a look at the video. the flames ran along the roof and the attic area and just spread from there. at one tpoint, roof just collapsed. it just gave way, and the flames then got even more intense. now, 161 occupied units, many of the residents there have mobility issues. they use walks, wheelchairs. firefighters made a number ofsc s, but it was also aef group rt with 100 marines from the

navy yardng run over to help. residents haveold news 4 that the sprinklers did not work, that the alarms did n go off. we spoke to one man whose mother lives in the building. he wants to know if all of those safety systems were working and inspected. >> this building has deteriorated over the last couple years, right. nso now the quest remains is, when they do the investigation, did the fire pump run? there's no reason why this fire should b the way it is, this big of a fire, if the fire suppression was working. >> reporter: now, the fire chief says the building was inspected a year ago and that he was not aware of any violations. everyone in the building, and this is very good news here, has been accounted for. there were four people taken to the hospital, but we've been told their injies are not life threatening, that they're going to be okay. certainly a lot of investigation work ahead of them as they tur to f out what started this fire and whether the sprinkler,

all six lanes on the bridge and bothth sidewalks. closures are part of long-term repair work on that bridge. you're going to need to usee alternoutes to cross the potomac river until monday morning when that bridge is expected to reopen. so you probably haven't been to theusiest restaurant in arlington. >> that's because the busies place toat in arlington is at school. our chuck bell, we sent him back to school tohe check outld lunches. they're so much better than when we were kids. >> way better. and i was just as popular this time in high schos i was all those years ago. >> oh, please. you're so popular. everyone asks about you. i >> wheas in school, lunch was a sandwich and an apple and beverage choice was between plain or chocolate milk. most of it promptlyent into the trash. that's not how it is today, as i found out when i visited yorktown high school in arliton county. vi reporter: when you're s 15,000 meals a day and your business depends on repeat customers, you better serve good >> it is a challenge. it's a challenge to keep our customers coming in every day.

>> reporter: in this case, the customers are the high school students in arlington's free sc public higols, not an easy group to please. what your kids will eat keeps her thinking all the time. the countyeamed up with cuisine solutions, and together the two have come up with an answer to the question, what's for lunch? >> i have been thinking for a long time about how to do a create your own system with local produce. we were purchasing tons of local produce. a lot of it was ending up in the trash. i wanted to combine fruits and vegetables with the entree, rather than the old-faioned pick up an apple, throw it in the garbage. >> you see the kids go in and enjoy these things like chipotle. we figured why notring that to school. >> reporter: the two launched a pilot program that mimics the chipotle model. it allows students to pick and choose their fruits and veggies. >> the student will pick a base grain thendd protein, which is either abf chicken, cheese, or

that breaking news in prince george's county. two officers were shot while going into an apartment last night. >> this happened around 10:30 off of lorring drive i district heights. justin finch is at the scene this morning. what's the latest? >> reporter: aaron, eun, police have been clear. this could have been so much worse. those two officers, we understand, have suffered non-life threateesng inju here on the scene where that happened, the crime tape is still up. investigatorse are still on scene and so are olice in uniform and in plain clothes. this is still a very active investigation going on here. it all began about 10:30 last

night. those two officers part of a ninsp nine-membeial operations team, serving a warrant here. they announced themselves and got no answer but had a sense someone was inside. they used a device topen that door. inside of that unit was a man arme with a shotgun. we're told he fired, striking two of those officers one in the shoulder, the other in his arm and hand area. another officer did fire back but did not strike that suspect. a medic on sight began work on both of thoses offic before a state police helicopter was brought in to fly those officers to a shock c traumaenter in the baltimore area. now, back out ve, as i said, as you can see here, the investigation is still ongoing at this time. it's unclear, though, if that suspect was the target of that warrant or a econd person also in that unit, who is now in custody, was the target either. we don't have names of the

reported. and a look at bw parkway. that crash is on the shoulder. an the rest of the beltway looking good rig now. aaron? >> all right, melissa. thank you. we turn to that developing story in southeastwashington. re than 100 senior citizens lost their home in a massive fire in southeast washington. >> this video shows you how hetense those flames were yesterday near navy yard. the roof couldn't handle the heat and fire and partially collapsed. this happened just after 3:00 p.m. >> megan mcgrath is live outside that building. i was out tre for about 1/2 hours yesterday, constant flames there. how long did it takete firefi to really get this under control? >> reporter: it took them a long urtime. this fned for hours. they were still pouring water on thelames at 11:30 last night. as you said, it started a little after 3:00. behind me, you c o see some the crews pulling out here, some of the fire crews.

they're ratcheting back their presence here on the scene. this was an enormouskire. take a lt the video. it started in th roof area. the flames spread from there,g hoppo different parts of the building. these apartments are home to many elderly people with mobility issues. people that use walkers and wheelchairs and tngs like that. firefighters scrambled to evacuate thosets resid then at one point, 100 marines stationed nearby at the navy yard, they ran over to help. in some ca they literally carried residents out of the burning several residents told news 4 yesterday that the sprinklers and smoke alarms did not go off. lewis west's father lives in the building, and he was inside when the fire broke out. >> get out, get out, fast, fast, fast. get out now. but no sprinkle lers went off. my father was laying in th bed. >> rheorter: did t smoke

alarms and sprinklers work or not? that a big part of this investigation.d we sholso mention everyone inside the building has been accounted for. four people were taken to the hospital but they're going to be okay. also something to note he, van ness elementary school, which is in the area, will be closed today because of poor air quality. obviously some activity still here on the scene. we're expecting to see more of it later on this morning as fire marshals try to get in there anh determine w those smoke alarms were working and what caused this fire. back toou y. >> all right, megan mcgrath. thank you. >> evacuating that building yesterday was challenging because so many of the residents couldn't move quickly. this is some video of one firefiter taking woman down the ladder here to safety. you can see how much care he'sn really putnto helping her come down on the ladder there. we've learned thatin is k mccray jr. his father, kevin senior, was also a. d.c. firefight he died on the job while responding to a high-rise fire back in 2015.

being shot. they're being treated for ni non-life threang injuries. they were part of a pecial operations unit serving a waant at an apartment on loting drive in the distr heights area. police say once those officers made entry, they aencountered suspect who was armed with a shotgun. he opened fire, hitting two of the officers, one in the hand, the other in the shoulder. that erninen emergency service team also includes a tactical medic. he was ableed to itely render aid to the injured officers. th were flown here to shock trauma for treatment. again, their injuries non-life threatening. as for the suspects, the susnect who o fire was taken into custody. a second suspect was also found inside the apartment. that person alsoaken into custody. no word what charges are going to be file, but we do know they did recover a weapon at the scene. now back to you. >> all right. jennifer from our baltimore affiliate, thank you. she left home for an evening jog only to be stabbed to death in the street. this morning family and friends are remembering the woman killed
