in the hospital and expected to survive. >> news 4's justin finch is live at the scene with the latest details. >> reporter: well, aaron, eun, avlice have been very clear. this story could had a much different ending. luckily these officers are expected to survive behind us n where that shooting took place, police are still on the scene., cruiserime scene investigators, detectives here still gathered outside that u as this police investigation continues here on the scene. two officers who were part of that nine-member special operations team were here about 10:30 last night serving a warrant here at the lorring park apartments a a top-level unit. othey knockedthe door, we are told, announced themselves, but not no answer back. they had a sense there was someone inside, so they used a device to open that door. once inside, here is what happened next. >> opens the zoor. there is an individual inside the apartment armed with a shotgun.

that individual fires that shotgun at our nine-man team of officers. fftwo of ourers are hit. >> reporter: very close call here indeed. looking live still a ongoing investigation at the lorring park apartments. those two officers were treated on scene by a medic and helicoptered to a shock trauma center in the baltimorerea for further treatment. one, we're told, is able to talk and breathen his own. the other may require surgery at this time. their names have not been released, neither has the suspect who is said to have shot them inside, or another personh also in unit who's also now in police custody. it's not clear, though, if those two individuals were the subjects of that warrant. we are due for an update soon from police. we'll bring that information once we get reporting live, i'm justin finch, news 4. back to you. >> justin, thankou. we're also following two other big stories this morning. >> a senior apartment complex in southeast turnsnto an inferno,

blocked by the crash there. and 270 looks good from0 to the spur, going about 44 miles per hour. ing to take you 41 minutes. slowest spot is as you approach na. aaron? >> all right, maielissa. thank you. now to the other major story we're following t flames ripped through a senior apartment building in southeast washington,ending residents running for their lives. the fire burned for hours there and was so big it could be seen from miles away. >> right now more than 100 residents are displaced. news 4's megan mcgrath is t liv ne building on 6th street southeast. so what's going to h these residents this morning? >> reporter: well, the d resides whn't go home with family, they're at a nearby rec center. they're working with the red cross and other d.c. agencies to figure out a more permanent housing solution for them. right now they're at that rec center. now, this was auge fire. take a look at the video here. flames ran across the roof of

ic area cture in the a and would pop up from one spot to the next as it just spread h the entire building. at one point, the roof just collapsed. the flachmes at that point got everyone more intense. 161 occupiunits were occupied. many residents have mobility issues. th use walkers and wheelchairs. so the evacuation was a bit complicated. firefighters made rescues, but it was also a group efft. 100arines from the nearby navy yard came over and literally carried residents out of the burning bui ing. residents had told news 4 that the sprinklers and smoke alarms didn't go off. wasn't much wind yesterday, so the smoke filled the entire we spoke to one resident who thought his house was on fire.ug >> i t it was coming from my house. so i ran downstairs, and i look out t door. i was like, oh, it's a fire. so i went over here, came in the

building. the lady i know, she lives oth block. she gave me some money to get some water for the seniors. >> reporter: so a lot of people in the community lending a helping hand here. now, everyone in the building has been accounted for. the four people who were taken to the hospital, they're going toe okay, we're told. van ness elementary school, which is in the area, will be closed today because of poor air quality. of course, the investigation continues. they want to know, what caused the fire and whether those smokalarms and sprinkler systems were working or not. back to you. >> all right. megan mcgrathiveor us there near the scene. megan, thank you. aaron, you happened to be covering this story yesterday, which is not part of your regular shift. that's because you were so close to it. >> yeah, i live in that neighborhood. literally just driving home yesterday afternoon, saw the smoke, sla thes coming from the highway and parked my car at home and walked over to report on this for a few hours

>> reporter: aaron, good morning to you. we're at the corner of 11th and i can tell you i've seen a number of early morning joggers, people plwalking, p on bicycles in this community this morning. i'm standing in front of these flowers that honor the woman who had so much to live for, but no suspect, no motive in her killing at thi point. wendy martinez, this is where she died. she collapsed fromer fatal wounds right at this spot. she was out tuesday nightg joggs she often did. police want you to look at the surveillance video that they released just yesterday showing the man they suspect walking along 11th street. in some of the footage, you actually can see a knife in his hand. this attack has really shaken the logan circle community. >> t as is bad as it gets. viously just extremely tragic and very surprising as well.

meanwhile, nearby van ness elementary school is closed today because of all the smoke still lingering in the air. >> iive in that neighborhood. i was on my way home yesterday afternoon about 3:30. you saw t ct smokeing from this building. this is exactly what it looked like when i drove up. not quite this bad at that point. but then you saw all theseus firefighters into the scene. you can see the flames jumping from one part of the building to the other. then you made to this last section that caught fire. the flames grew really quickly and the roof just crumbled right mthere in thedle of this scene. this was just awful to watch. at the same time, it wa really impressive to see theefz firefighters storm into that building, really going at it, trying to save people. marines helped out with that effort too. i did hear from the son of one resident who talked about the fire alarm a the sprinklers in the building, saying they were not working, they didn't go off as they were supposed to. that's what he said. this no doubt is going to be a huge part othe investigation though.

>> this building had has deteriorated over the last couple years, so now the question remains, when they do their investigation, did the fire pump run? there's no reason why this fire shouldhe way that it is, this big of a fire if the suppression was working. >> the fire pump he was talking about, the suppression system there.ha really a big cenge getting all the residents out of them were older. they couldn't move as quickly. you see the marines running in from the nearby marine corps barracks. they jumped in there, literally helped people with theirac tion in stretchers, wheelchairs. they threw people over their shoulders to try to get them out of that asilding. and we now know, those people were able to get them out safely. d.c. firefighters rescued several other people using ladders. this is vids yeo here. you can see just how much care that firefighter is taking. we learned that firefighter is kevin mccray jr. his father was also a d.c.re ghter. he died in the line of duty while rponding to a high-rise

building fire back in 2015. she f left home an evening jog only to be stabbed to death in the street. this morning family and friends areemembering the woman killed in northwest d.c. wendy martinez was a georgetown graduate and was also recently engaged. right now t search is o for her killer. news 4's molette green is live in the logan circle neighborhood where the stabbing happened. she has more now on the suspect search. >> reporter: good morning. we are right at the corner of 11th and p, where there are n flowers left wendy martinez's honor. this morning there iso motive and no suspect. police, however, have released some surveillance footage to help find the person who did this. shows the man walking along 11th street, and somef the foot j you can actually see that he has a knife in his hand. this vibrant neighborhood is

they used a device to open that door, andnside of tha unit, they found a man armed with a shotgun. we're td he quickly opened fire, striking one officer in the oulder, the other in his arm and hand area. on scene, there was a medic who was able to respond, get those officers treated before they were taken by helicopter to baltimore for trauma and shock treatment. >> i've got to tell u, the relief that we are feeling righa now isy hard to put into words. we have two officers who are at baltimorehock trauma right now. from wt we understand, they have non-life threatening injuries at this point. >> reporter: police stressed over and over again this could have been a lot worse. as you look live at the scene, officers are still here investigating. we don't have the names of those officers at this time or the name of the suspect who is p no ice custody. we are told that person

for the damage here, essen ially the roo gone. you can see all the damage that has been done to the upper floors. water was still being poured on the fire at 11:30 last night. that was nearly eight hours after it started. this was an enormous fire. th flames beginning in the roof ar o and then spread, kin hopping to different parts of the building. the apartments are home to many elderly people with mobility issues, people who use walrs and wheelchairs. firefighters scrambled to evacuate those residents. atne point, 100 marines stationed at the nearby navy yard ran over to help, but in some casesed literally car residents out of the burning building. several residents we spoke to yestday said the sprinklers and the smoke alarms did not go off. >> runni through there, knocking on doors. no fire alarms went off in the building. no sprinklers went off.
