>> announcer: news4 midday begins with breaking new that breaking news in aberdeen, maryland, where we know there's been a shooting at a business park, possibly a arehouse. >> law enforcemencies say as many as five people have been shot. but the extent of their injuries at this point is unknown. what we know right now is there's going to be an 11:45 jm. briefing this morning. this happenedt after 9:00 this morning in a business park in aberde. some kind of distribution center, perhaps very close to church creek elementary school which right now is on modified lockdown. >> this is going to be about 20, 30 miles south of the delaware/maryland line.

you're lookia map of that area, right off interstate 95, not far from the maryland house rest area, if you will. we're going to keep an eye on this for you thimorning. we'll have much more information in just a minute here. we're alsoth following a breaking story, that there has been an arrest in the logan vircle jogger murder. the im, wendy martinez, we know was stabbed on her evening run near 11th and " street 11:00 tuesday night. >> news4's chrisordon is live in northwest with the latest. chris? >> reporter: well, the suspect, who is under arrest, is 23-year-old anthony crawford, arrested last nigar at a at 14th and gerard. mayor muriel bowser says this in outraged community. the police chief, peter newsham, called this an unprovoked, attaery unsettling, very isolated in what he called a

safe neighborhood. 35-year-old wendy martinez was an avid jogger. she was running tuesday night, west on "p street and at the intersection of 11th and "p" she was tabbed multipletimes. she came into the asian-american restaurant where cus in vain to save her. the suspect was captured on video. it appears that this was the same suspect we've been suwing n tv. he was wearing a very distinctive mustard-colored shirt and carrying a knife. we'll hear now from the mayor and police chief about today's -- about the arrest made yesterday. >> wendy's murder has been devastating to her family and friends. people in this neighborhood. and certainly damaging to all of our sses ofsafety. >> i live in this city. i think that it is unsettling for anyone who lives in this city to see something like this happen.

abt 9:00 this morning. this is south of aberdeen, maryland, in a business area there on the 1500 block of ro perryman . we can also tell you at this point that speci agents with baltimore's atf office a areo responding to the scene. we are hearing -- we've got that reporter fromwbal on the scene. that's jane milleroi we're to have to her live shot right now. let's do that. >> reporter: the area near route 40 and route 7, t whole stretch, 95, route 40, all of them go north/sout it's in that warehouse area off perryman i ad. just told again the public afab ens police department told meo one is in custody. we're waiting to get further information about that. he did say this is not an active shooter situation,rd in other there's no shooting going

on anymore. but the question is whether the person who -- the shooter is in custody. he says as far as he knows the shooter is not in stody. so were waiting to clarify that. all we know in terms of victims is the term that's been used is "multiple victims." i did see one medic leaving whec i wasser to where this happened. there's a lot of trafficti disr, a lot of the scene just closed off all around that area, so that thecan really try to figure out exactly what happened, how many people may have been involved, and to ma t suret if they do take someone into custody, that's the person that was responsible for the shooting this so again, that's as much as i can tell you. we'reor waiting some clarification as to what the situation ith right now a moment. according to the aberdeen police, no one is in custody.

know this morning. megan? >> reporter: the tremendous amount of oodamage, the has been gone, and damage to the upper floors. everyone who lived in this building is without a home at this onint. we still have a cause for this fire. investigators won't be able to go inside this building until it's determined that safe and that it won't collapse. that probably won't be until sometime tomorrow. meanwhile we've learned more abt the alarm system in the building, specifically that the building alarmsystem, that's the one that's wall-mounted, those red llounted alarms that you pull. the chief says it appears that they were not workg. >> i got my mom's picture. >> reporter: when mary jarrett-minor learned the grabbed one of her most precious belongings, a picturef h mother. everything else she had to leave

behind. >> they should give us a place to stay and how to get medicine, medical supplies at the same place. >> reporter:s the fire raged along the roof line, the rescue operation began. and what a group effort it proved to . there were firefighters on ladders. then came about a hundred marines fromhe nearby navy yard. they went in and literally carried residents t. en people from the neighborhood sprang into action. bruce lives down the street. >> we immediately left our hom and went right through the main entrance and started banging on people's doors. >> reporter: as he went door to door, he says he pulled a nt wall-m fire alarm but nothing happened. >> as we saw the fire alarms, we were pulling them. nothing. just kept going. it didn't pay for us to stand there. >> reporter: several ridents told news4 they were warned by knocks at the door, not smoke or detect off.e alarm did not go our sprinklers did not go off.

>> reporter: t emergency stems in the building are part of the investigation. fire chief gregory dean says it ividual smoke alarms in the apartments were working, as wa the sprinkl system. they just didn't activate on the lower floors because they hadn't yet been expos to smoke and flames. >> they were wethere, the doing what they were supposed to do, but they wen't affected by the fire. people pulled the fire alarms, the building maintenance, they pulled one. no one was hearing the horns. >> reporter: soxactly what happened there, why those pull alarms weren't causing the bells to ring, that's part of the investigation.o i should a mention there has been all along quite a concern by the community for thesi nts here, many of whom have lost so much in this fire. some o them lost everything, really, on those upper floors. group called the near southeast community partners

now? you can walk around. >> walk, talk, i can eat. i can make slime. >> reporte in the heart unit where she spent the summer, she's an inspiration to her friends still waiting for arts. >> i missed you. >> reporter: sophia ended up here in june after her mom natalie knew something wasn't right. > she was really gray i coloring. she was losing weight, not being able to eat. i was taking her from doctor to do >> reporter: what were they saying? >> asthma. one doctor said she had psychological issues. >> reporter: her mother's intuition told her that wasn't right. she begged for more tests. was there a moment when the doctor said there's a real problem with her heart? >> i could tell the way the emergency room doctor came back in, and she told me, you were right, you saved her life. >> reporter: by the time she was admitted to the hospital, sophia's heart was pumping at 12%. dbut sixays after meeting drake, her mom told her they had a heart donor.

shooting on the 1500 block of perryman road, it appears to be some sort of a distribution center, i believe it's thed rit istribution center in that area, that four people are according to pete williams, a spect is detained, it is a female suspect, and they are alive at this point. we're also hearing that multiple other people are injured. right now the fbi and other local agencies arein sweep buildings, looking for other clues. this started unfolding at 9:00 this morning in that business area jt south of aberdeen, maryland. it appears to be a rite aid distribution center. p again, multiplple are injured. and now we know that at least four people are dead. governor larry hogan already tweeting this morning, we are closely monit the horrific situation in aberdeen, our prayers are with all those impacted including our first responders. so again, this latest information coming in from pete

bthor is trying to inspire our budding book wor writing about different subjects but alill making them kid friendly. we'reng about topics like economics and the law. veronica goodman is here to tell me about her latest book, "lfo law." i have a lawyer in my family so this sort of jumd out atme. what inspired you to do this one? because this is your second book. >> it is. my husband is a lawyer, and we have a 2-year-old at home. we wanted to teach her and sort of what he experiences at work. it was a good opportunity to do that. >> it really is interesting. i had to ask my husband, the lawyer, a couple of different questions about things, i even learned something. when did you decide, you're an economist and you wrote your other book, you have that there as well, "e is for economics," when did you decide to sit down and say, let me do something at will really teach kids and perhaps inspire them? >> my background is inic econ and i looked for books on economics or law and really couldn't find an and there are a lot of books on
