nbc's janis mackey frayers in indonesia with more. >> reporter: the devastation is vast, twisted cars and debris. and in the scramble to find survivors, u rescuers areng their hands to search because there isn't enough heavy equipment. it's unclear how many people are trapped or were pulled out sea, but the number of dead here is surging. "the walls started falling around us" says this woman who escaped a shopping mall before it collapsed. disaster officials here to cope.e the destruction on the coast in palu is only part of it. areas closer to the quake's epicenter are still cut off. what has hpened to over a quarter million people there unknown. >> the bridges and the roads are damaged to get in. it's very, vy difficult. >> reporter: the island was struck by two powerful disasters. so the tsunami took experts by

>> reporter: in northeast, darcy spencer, news4. children can sometimes help adults understand the importance of a national problem. a little 7-ye-old girl did just that today in d.c. on the one-year anniversary of the las vegas shting massacre.th is 7-year-old havana edwards. dozens heard the little girl speaking at the u.s. capitol for tougher gun lies. she laid flowers next to a poster thet showed victims of the massacre. her inspiration came from another young woman. >> i may be small, but my voice is not. 13 years old. nobody needs to wait even a moment before starting to improve the world. >> onef the many wounded in the attack was tina frost. the annarundel high school graduate lost her right eye. she spent months in rehab, learning to walk again. after a century and a half of helping washingtonians worship, a historic black church held its final services today.

hundreds filled the pugh ed te lincoln congregational. the church founded by freed slaves, the church is playing an important role. it w a staging ground for the march on washington and a sanctuary during the 1968riots. the church was founded in 1868. air force one is floating on the.otomac river tonig well, a replica of it is. aiewer took a picture of it on the barge near the 301 bridge. it's part of a project to bout educate kids democracy around the world. it will be on display at the national harbor next month. tickets are $30 for adults and $15 for kids ages 3 to 12. tomorrow a new change goes into effect for maryland's move over law. this one goes beyond emergency vehicles. if you see a work truck with its lights on, you must move over when passing.
