yesterday. snider veered into the other lane and struck a box truck. there wa no one in that box truck, we understand. snider was skilled on the scene of that crash.s back live t morning, he's remembered as being kird working an, having a positive impact on all who knew him. the crash itself uremainer investigation, though police have ruled out alcohol as atr potential cuting factor. we're live here in germantown, justin finch, news 4 back to you. >> justin, thank you. three minutes now after 5:00. police in prince george'sounty say a man was found dead in the street last night. he was found on manton way in lanham around 9:30. he'd been shot. this morning, no word on the suspect or motive. >> well, this morning a suspect is in custody after what's being called a brutal rape. a woman walking to a friend's

house from a metro station invi roe says she was dragged into the woods and attacked. news 4's megan mcgrath is standing by the details. >> reporter: well, guys, i just got off the phone with police moments ago. now have the name of the person who has been arrested and now charge the sexual assault. 5e has been identified as dustin rodgers, years old, charged ulth first-degree rape and first-degree as he's being held without bond. i'm also told that he lives in the area near where the attack occurred, which isere along route 355, fredrick road in the rockville area. the victim was walking from the shady grove metro station to a friend's house around midnit. as s got near west gude drive, the suspect pulled her into a linef trees alongside the road. the victim was beaten and raped.

she was able to get away and got help from security guard at a nearby office building. now, news of the attack disturbing to women who use metro and walk in the area but not everyone is surprised. >> it's kind of shocking, but i'm not surprised around here anymore. >> reporter: now, the victim is being treated at an area hospital. again, the suspect has now been identified, arrested. word of the arrest coming late la night. i.d. just coming homes ago. dustin rodgers, 25 years old. he's been charged with first-degree rape and first-degree assault. back to you. >> all right, anmegan. you. now to the latest on the some breaking news in south carolina where one officer is dead. six others recovering from beinh . chris lawrence with an update on the suspect and what sparked this shooting. chris? aaron, seven police officers shot in one incident. one of them has died. in fact, it was so dangerous that police had to use a bullet

proof truck to get some of the wounded officers out of the line of fire. this all went down after sheriff's deputies tried to iserve a search warran florence, south carolina. they were investigating an alleged sexual assault on a foster child. this is a look at the scene moments after a man inside phe homeled a high-powered rifle and started shooting. overnight, we learned suspected shooter is an elderly man named fred hopkins, the father of the suspect in that alleged sexual assault. police say they couldn't storm the house because hopkins was lding four children hostage. eventually hopkins surrendered and the children were found hiding under a golf cart in the garage. they're all safe now, but officials say the children will need a lot of support and prayers as well as some of the families of those officers. >> pray for these officers and their speedy recovery. ceay for t family who lost the bravest police of that i have ever known. >> this is a look at officer terrence carraway, who was

killed in that shootout. according to our affiliate in south carolina, he had just received a 30-year service pin. a young man in the house was alsoit shot. not clear if it was by police or his father. he's in surgery. the six wounded officers have all received medicale?reatment. an >> that is scary. thank you, chris. the contentious and at times itter debate over whether to confirm presidetrump's supreme court pick may soon reach its conclusion. this morning senators will review the fbi's investigation into the sexual assault allegation against judge brett kavanaugh. thehite house tweeted overnight the compiled report was sent to capitol hill. senators will access the report inotating blocks. that starts at 8:00 this morning. seepublican leader mitch mcconnell announced there would be a procedural ve tomorrow d the final confirmation vote may happen saturday. despite the senate moving forward, opponents of kavanaugh's nomination are still fighting.

bars this morning accused of sending suspicious letters to the pentagon and the white house. those letters contained a substance initially believed to be the poison ricin. william allen from utah is expected in court on friday to face formal charges. the pentagon says the letters did not contain ricin as initially believed. they contained ceator that can be turned into that poison. investigators were led to allen's home because his return address was o listedthe envelope. it's 5:09, and there's that new effort under way to keep yands schools safe. governor larry hogan announced a new tip linean where you report threats against schools or students. the number on your screen right he, 833-md-b-safes anonymous. tips will go to maryland's emergency management headquarters. the governor says this line is not meant to place 911 but rather to providenother option. today a vigil will be held for tom llowell, the local man who was killed while riding his

welcome back. applying for federal financial aid for yndr college bid may be a bit easier thanks to this. it is a new app, and it's calle my student aid app. it allows applicants to compare information about schools a electronically transfer their tax data from their tax returns. the department efcation says that the app is intended to make it easier for students tofo app federal financial aid. every year the department awards about $120 billion in grants, storent loans, andk study programs. you can download it for free in the app store. this morning, parents in prince george's county say mold inside benjamin creative and performing arts academy is making their children news 4's chris gordon spoke with parents and the school system to find out what's being done. >> reporter: chrissy and nate te m med in the school makes their son sick. he's an eighth grade student here at benjamin foulo

high school in geantown where that 17-year-old was a student. news 4's justin finch is live at school with what's being done for other students today. >> reporter: well, aaron, knowing today will be a hard day for students and staff here at northwest high school, grief counselors are going to be on hand to help tm as they mourn the death of senior joshua snyder. th principal breaking that sad arws yesterday, remembering joshua as being working, kind, and having a positive impact here in a school wide. lett the principal also noting how heartbreaking it was to have to share that news yesterday. that came hours after joshua was killed on scene of this crash at i-0 southbound near montrose road close to 3:00 p.m yesterday. police did not immediately release his name though but did say thatr snyehind the wheel of this buick sedan somehow veered left on to a shoder and struck a stopped box truck. there was no one inside of that

truck. again, snyder was pronounced dead on the scene of the crash. it remains under investigation, although alcohol is not believed to have played a factor in that crash. back out live again on what's going to be a very difficult day. grief counselors will be here,p ready to hyone who needs help today, mourning the death of joshua snyder. we're liveerin germantown, justin finch, news 4. >> justin, thank you. 5:34 right now. just a few minutes ago, the senateee judiciary commias confirmed it received the fbi's report on judge brett kavanaugh and the assault allegation leveled against him. >> now senators plan to start reading this today at 8:00 this morning. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell announced a procedural vote for tomorrow with a possible confirmation vote on saturday. dr. christine blasey ford, the woman accing kavanaugh of sexual assault, criticized rnvestigators for not interviewing her witnesses. a portion of the statement

released by her attorney says, quote, we are profoundly disappointed that after the tremendous sacrifice she made in coming forward, those directing the fbi investigation were not interested in seeking the truth, end quote. coming up, news 4's tracie potts will have reaction from capitol hill in a live report. now to our other top story. montgomery county police have just released the name of a man arrested in a brutal rape. 25-year-old dustin rodgers is charged with first-degree rape and assault. the victim was walking to a friend's house from the shady grove metro station tuesday around midnight. she says she was dragged into the woods and raped. news 4's megan mcgrath is still gathering the latest on this case. a live report in a f minutes. police in prince george's county say a man was found dead in the street last night. the man was found on manton way and lanham around 9:30. he'd be shot. no word on a spect or a motive. we are learning more about syesterday's activeoter situation in florence, south carolina, where seven law enforcement officers were shot.

just a horrible, horrible situation out there, megan. >> reporter: well, yeah, that's right. we have new breaking information this morning. police have identified the man who wa arrested a charged in connection with this brutal rape that happened her tuesday night along route 355 in the rockville justng this information a area. short time ago. the suspect has identified as 25-year-old dustin rodgers. he's been charged with first-degree rape and first-degree assault. he's being held without bond at this time. the victim was walking from the shady grove metro station to a friend's house. this was just befor midnight on tuesday. she was walking along the sidewalk here on route 5, fredrick road. she got about a mile away from that metro s station. approached west gude drive, police say that rodgers pulled her intoome trees along the side of the road there, that he beat and rapedtier. the v was able to get help from a security guard at a nearby office building.

opening this morning you'll be able to return to the mt. vernon trail at 6:00 a.m. it had been closed earlier this week after large construction equipment damaged a bridge leading to that trail between memorial circle and the roosevelt bridge. the national park service says engineers came out to check the bridge, and it is safe for joggers and cyclists. a new l will require more homeowners in montgomery county to install carbo moxide detectors. this bill was first reported by the news 4 i-team this summer and has been formally approved. the change means existing homil before 2008 will need detectors under two conditions. those conditions, if they have a gas operated appliance or ifn they have attached garage. the county already had a law requing newlyonstructed homes to have those detectors. well, could you live i less than 200 square feet? some people are choosing to hove ines that are smaller than a metro car. d.c. high scol students built these homes as part of a program to revitalizeadeighborhoods.
