new york cityas been evacuated. >> reporter: the return addresses on the packages the florida office of former dnc chair debbie wasserman schultz. the congresswoman's office was evacuated when a package intended for former attorney general eric holder was returned there. that package later determined to be safe. while investigators say the devices had bo-making materials, it's unclear if they were actually capable of detonato a. of cours you know, all of these democrats are being targeted two weeks before the midterm elections. fear via mail, guys. back to you. >> thank you. >> let's go to nbc's justice correspondent working h urces hard on this one. pete, good morning. i mean, in theory, there is a e lot of evideere because you do have these undetonated bombs. what are investigators doing right now? >> by our account, nine so far, including two sent to maxine waters. one found in l.a. >> one in the washington, d.c.

or ter that scans mail congress. we are told by several officials that fortunately the devices they have examined so far appear to have been poorly made. they ctain a number of flaurks whh for obvious reasons we won't be specific about. there is -- they don't know if that was the bomb maker's mistakes. it takes times to analyze these devices and to get an answer why they didn't w hk and they were constructed, that's not going to come immediately. they are worki around t clock. >> the hunt is on to find whoever the person or persons are who sent so what are investigators doing? >> so, first of all, you have the bombs themselves analyzed at the fbi lab. they are looking for trace of evidence, dna, fibers, hair, anything would identify who did . also where the component is made from. four of these packages, the once sent to the clintons, obamas,

holder, waters were sent through the mail. those were postmarked. hat's important because those marks contain important information that could be used to help fure out not only what city they came from, but what post officem.andled t when they know that, they will look at surveillance video from the date when it's believed they were sent. >> all right. pete, thank you very much. >> we will bring in sean henry, an nbc news national security analyst and former executive assistant director the fbi. good morning. let's drill down on what pete was just talking about. if you are the investigators right now, you are literally in clock.against the you don't know if there are other packa.s out there what are they looking at to try to if they can find this person? >> there is an abundance of evidence here. you have got eight or more packageshat have been delivered. you have the physical packages. as pete said, dna potentially fingerprints, hairs and fibers lhat might be connected to the evidence as w as markings on the envelopes themselves. then you have got the actual

devices which investigators will look for signatures specific signatures there as it relates to the detonation and how the bomb was constructed and they will look through te datab to see if they have seen this before. those areots of clues that will help them get down to who this individual or individuals may be. more importantly, i think, when you think about where they were put into the mail system they have been delivered by curious, thes. vid remember the boston marathon bombing. we saw what appeared to be avi of tsarnaev moving through the crowd, placing the bomb. that wasn't a video. that was many videos collected from storefronts, from passersby, from other locations. and investigators are going to use that as a key source of evidence to identify who these people are. >> there were a lot of mistakes made it seemed. there were addresses incorrect, there were missufllings and like that. does that figure into the investigaiion? >> it cey will as investigators hone in on this. there has been a lot of speculation about who this could

ti. i think what invtors are doing right now is focusing on the evidence. that's what they are trained to once they start to get down to who the suspect or suspects may be, they will use some of the evidence collected off of those envelopes, themisspellings, et cetera, as part of a larger case to identify tse specific people. >> one thing that the nypd commissioner said, that this was a live explosive device with regards to the ones found here, but then they didn't detonate. so, i mean, is it a real bomb? that's what people are ndering. >> it is because it has the components of a bomb. there is a detonator, explosives. it's contained within the capsule, the pipe, in this case pvc. it didn't fire fie a v of reasons. they are not going to say that because they don't want the bomb makers to make adjus this as a tve device. bull the components were there to harm somebody had that exploded. >> john, thank you so much. >> as we mentioned, the

identified. there is no word on a motive. during the chaos customers were moved to the back of the store. that store is going to be closed until the investigation is look out below. a military cargo plane accidentally dropped a humvee into a wooded area outside ft. bragg, nth carolina on wednesday. officials say it was on a platform attached to a parachute. dy was hurt in the incident. the vehicle wasupsed to land on a drop zone about a mile away. i guess it droppeda prematurely. eview of what went wrong is underway right now. dozens of firefighters had tod e cal a california home after a man used a blowtorch in an attempt to kill black widow spiders. this happened in fresno. he was house sitting for his parents when he discovered the venomous spiders. he used the blowtorch on the exterior of the house and the flames spread. fire officials str advise ople to use other metho when trying to dispose of spiders.

like a can o raid. back to the package bombs. package bombs sent to well known democrats all over the country. athere a lot of moving pieces to the investigation, but investigators have some history to draw on as well. nbc's tom costello joins us with that partf the story. >> good morning. that and the postal service element. theombs weresimilar, made of pvc piping, containing a timer and an explosive powder. the fbi is now examining some of the bombs at the fbi bomb lab in quantico, virginia, from forensic tms will examine every detail of the packaging and bomb compones, looking for clues. amid a national manhunt for whoever is responsible for this week's pipe bomb mailings, investigators will be pulling from past cases. last march the austin bomber killed two people and injured four others over a three-week period. >> a terrifying mystery. >> reporter: investigators zeroed in on the 23-year-old suspect after he was caught on

spin suspicious whilen the be the handwriting on the inches, where the envelopes may have beas pur, possible dna on the envelopes. every possible detail you could think of. back to you. >> a lot of possible evidence out there. tom costello, thanks. >> that brings us to clint van zandt, one of the fbi profilers who worked on the unaboer case. clint, good morning to you. not to put you on the spot, but we have some information already about who this suspect or suspects are. whats the profile that you are kind of building in your mind? >> well, you know, the question right now is, are these bombs eal or simply made to look real? it's hard to imagine somebody could build nine devices and we're told they have timing devices on them. nine times they wt out there and we didn't get an explosive. we are glad that didn't happen, but does that suggest that a bomber doesn't know what he is doing, or is he simply trying to send a message, just a shout across the bough of america for

some political or personal reason. one of the this we have going in new york, there are 13,000 government and private business camera out there. the average new yorker gets his or her picture taken 100, 200 times a day. so they are going to be looking hard at those cameras, pictures, as well as all of this treasure orensic evidence because none of these bombs went off. we have the complete device and every forensic string that's attached to themo look at at this time. >> these went democrats.ent it leads some to conclude that must have come from someone from the other political party. others say, no, this may just ba a fake. what is your take on it? >> well, i think that's a good term, head fake. it's something that the fbi, atf and other agencies don't want to get faked out. that's whyouo a two-track investigation. like a set of railroad tracks where one tra says, okay, it's

likely a persons who reflective of one political belief. the other track is it's likely somebody o the other sid trying to do a fake. so the authorities willdea be looking at b they will be looking at letters that have been written to the recipients. this is not a person who just woke up threeays ago a said, ththink i'll build at least nine bombs and sen out. this guy has had, this person has had time to plan this. the question now i was he so good that he was able to put all of the comnents in, but not hook them together so the bombs didn't go off to send a message, or is this person so inept that they could build so many bombs and not do i but remember, as you discussed, we have got these other signs. h e got notwithstanding all the stamps on the envelope, we have g this message that is contained inside. we have this -- it's almost like

and i'mki openly t about them. i mean, i'm still struggling weekly or from time to time i have bad day where i do go into a depressive state. >> to understand how you heldwa, ave to underst.r of 2014, you w your knees. you didn't leave your house for five days. you were going through basic hell and thinking aboutnding it. what was happening in that time? >> for me, ilike, was so down on myself. i didn't have alf-love. quite honestly, i didn't want to be alive. it was a really, really, really crazy time for me. i didn't want to see anybody because, you know, for me, like i saw myself as letting so many people down, me myselfn particular. that's hard to carry. i think over those three or four days where i didt want to leave my room, didn't want to talk to anybody, i finally realized that i can ask for help and it's oka to not be okay.

ior me that's what changed my life. ever asked for help really ever in my career. that was the first time tt i really did that. and i was, i mean, like you sa, i was on my knees crying for help. i'm lucky to be able to sit down with a therapist and chat and talk and open u and it' challenging for people to do. and i think it's, you know, for me now beible to work with talk space and traveling as much as i do, to hav the access on my phone where i can pop on wherever i want 24 hours a y, seven days a week, and get the help that i need, it's something that continueso teach m more and more about myself, and i think that's something that's kind of fun for me moving forward, especially with two kids. >> you mentioned head space. you are a shareholder, member of the advisory board. this is a service that people can ca or text, excuse me. talk space.
