>> announcer: this is an nbc news special report. here's savannah guthrie. >> good morning. we have breaking news in this investigation into an array of mail bombs sent in this last week. a man in florida has been taken into custody for questioning. nbc's justice correspondent pett williams h latest on this. pete, what are you hearing? >> well, authorities are not -- are being very careful here, savannah, not to say that they believe they have crthis case. far from it. what they say is that they have identified a person that they believe may have information relevant to the inveigation and that person has been taken into custody for questioning. no charges, we believe, have been filed. they're not calling this at thir point ant, but it may just

be extra cautious. but we're going to express that bme caution. now, we know theren a great deal of investigative upfocus on florida, for a of reasons. one is the opa-locka sorting cente which they now know som of the devices went through and in fact one was just found today there addressed to cory booker going through the facility, senator cory booker, but secondlyapart from that, we know there's been a lot of investigative focus, a lot of le pehat have been people of interest to them that have come on the hit parade and washed off and that they focused on a lot of different people. n now their focus has been man, we're told, in florida who's been taken into custquy fotioning. again, they're not saying that this is the arrest that breaks the case, but they believe that this is an important investigative st. that's the way they're describing it now. >> so as you said, there have probably been a lot of people they have talked to in the last few days. hithis does seem to be som more serious in the sense that, as you put it, this person has

been brought into custody. does that suggest to you that the rson didn't go luntarily? it needed to be something more th's a chitchat at that pers house? to the extent you can read the tea leaves based on your experience, what do you think this means? >> well, i think you've got it w exacly right, but i just don't want to get ahead of the information we know. we knew this morninghat there was a great deal of interest in a particular person, and a lot of optimism that they may be headed toward the closing phases of this investigation. but we're a long way from saying that they have arrested someone and charged them with the bombing. the way it's been described to us is it's a person that they want to question. whether this is a euphemism and they're trying to hedge their bets, i don't know. i can only what we have been told and that's the way it's been described to . >> as you were mentioning, florida a big center of the investigation for a couple of

days now, not just the mailing facility but also these packages. i think we're up to 12f them in all that we know of, all bore one thing in common and that is the return address of the congresswoman there and the former head of the dnc, debbie wasserman schultz. >> that's right. for thateason one of the things they have been looking at was were there people that had a grievae with her. the fact that, sure, on the addressees all seemed to be people critical of donald trump, but every single return address was like the one you're looking at there to her with her last name misspelled and the name florida misspelled a. but that's been a question for them. why, why focus on her? in fact one of the packages th mes sent up here, destined for eric holder, the fattorney general, went back to her because of that return address. so that's been a question for investigators. d whs that have to do, why choose that name? >> indeed. i should mention the department of justice has now officially confirmed what you have already

s ported, pete, that there person in custody but we are making the distinction, as t y they have not said they have made an arrest or certainly filed any additional k charges in connection with this case. so we don't yet know if this i somebody who could be a perpetrator or somebody who could be a witness. it's clearly somebody they want to talk to at this hour. i will just kno say this. we just heard one other thing here that's interesting. now word from the justice department saying we can confirm one person in custody. and i think there are other to indicationead us now to think that this is more than just a custodial interview, that ththis is probably a perso they believe is responsible for these bombings, or at a very, very important step in this investigation. and let me put it this way, if ere is an arrest or if there

2:30 this morning. we will bring you uptes throughout the day. >> switching gears in a developing sto f inrfax county, officials are investigating another deadlycr pedestrianh. chopper 4 was over the scene in springfield this morning. this was in the areaf cold keene mill road and elaster drive. officials have not released thei im's identity. in charles county, more than a dozen children and driver were sent to a hospital after a crash this morning involving a school bus. police s i theuries appear to be minor. a dump truck was also involve in this. the children are from j.p. elementary school in waldorf. we're learning new information about the investigation into the university o maryland athletic maprogram. land commissioned a report after the death of football player jordan mcnair.
