"early today" starts right now. . bre news overnight. anetndonesian j carrying 189 passengers, including at least two infants nd achild, has crashed. d there is no official word yet on the fatalities. the lion airow flight went shortly after taking off from an airport in jakarta, according to officials. the pilots lost contract with air traffic control before plunging rapid into the sea. nbc's sarah harmon is following this story from london. what more do we know at this point? >> reporter: good morning to you, frances. this was supposed to be a sho flight, just 1:10 long. instead, the boeing737 took off from jakarta and 13 minutes later crashed into thesea. as you said, there were 189 people on luboard, ing one child and two babies. so far we don't know anything about survivors, but obviously theamilies are holding out hope.

the flight was operated by a budget carrier, lion air. and they've said the plane was w. it had onl been in use since august and they don't know why it crashed. li p air'sident did say this plane had experienced a echnical problem on a previous flight, but he said it had been fully remedied. about 't go into detai the kind of problem. the weather at the time was clear and the pilot had more than 6,000 flying hours. indonesian officials are now using ships and helicopters in the search, and they're sen dng iners to locate the plane's black box. this is the second major air disaster in less than five years for indonesian. remember back in december of 2014, that airasia crash that killed 162 people.si indos airlines do have a poor safety record, so bad that over the years several of their airlines have beenanned from flying in both the u.s. and europe. but today for the country, and especially for the families, it's looking like a very tragic day indeed.

together in the aftermath of this devastation, which isghhe word. there have been vigils on saturday, vigils on sunday. a lot of people t makingir way up to the site of this attack, leaving flowers t close that synagogue, talking about the importance, the specialness of this weneighborhood. focus on the role of the jewish community, but people emphasize the wide diversity of squihill. everyone eager to tell me why they decided to move here, why they decidedo raise their kids here, have families here. that's the schools, that's the sense of .community. rogers, fred rogers of "mr. rogers's neighborhood" is a few blocks away from where i stand. it is a neighborhood well aware of what it stands for, and that is a true senseco of unity. >> it makes it tougher when you hear that, especially for the families who have to buryheir love ones. what are you hearing from them? >> reporter: this is wrenchinm we heard f the medical examiner from allegheny county in that news conference yesterday outlining the work he's doing, saying he's doing it with respect for several law, autopsiesfinish those

job. he was a big, strong guy. he was able to support the weig r of it. orter: a weight the survivors of this community say they'll keep nrrying. >> i going anywhere else. pittsburgh is home. >> reporter: n matter what. this community is continuing to pray for those four victims who remain inhat hospital behind me. but they're also getting ready for funerals, likely in t coming days. >> the grief there palpable. matt, thank you. among the six injured in saturday's mass shooting were four police officers after they ri ced their lives toonfront the gunman. pittsburgh's darkest day may also be remembered as the day of remarkab i bravery for first responders. nbc's lester holt has more. >> reporter: with gun and medical bag, emergency physician keith murray accompanied s.w.a.t. members as they rushed toward the synagogue to save lives. >> we started clearing rooms, mediately found victims, assessed them toee if there was anything we could do. >> reporter: as medral director pittsburgh's s.w.a.t., dr.

murray found himself in the thick of it with shots still ringing out. he went to work. >> initially on-scene we treated one civilian who was shot in the arm. >> reporter: we're diagonal frot across street from the synagogue. we can see broken-out glas piles of glass in the street. there was gunfire coming from inside the synagogue to responding police officers. law enforcement officials here remain shaken by what they witnessed inside the synagogue. >> several of the individuals were athe top of thestairs. it was a horrific crime scene. probably one of the worst i've seenff >> reporter:ials now turning their focus to the lives saved. >>e hen the first five pol officers arrived, they tried to confront the subject. >> reporter: the city's em medical director responded after hearing the shots from his nearby home. >> i realized quickly thatt was automatic gunfire. i immediately knew i had to spring into action. >> reporter: pittsburgh mourning a tragedy while knowing it could have been souch worse.
