woodbridge with why police opened fire. darcy? >> reporter: erika, we're here on featherstone road. if you take a look at the scene behind me, the street is a couple of streets away from where i'm standing. the road closures remain in place at this hour. the police chief came out and briefed reporters this evening, making it very clear, this could have been much worse. >> one of our cruisers was struck a number of times with gunfire. so basically, this was an ambush. >> reporter: prince william county police shot aed wou man armed with a rifle. the suspect allegedly opened fire oneyfficers as arrived at the scene on laurel street in woodbridge. he was taken into custody. >> they were pulling up and they all of the sden realize they'd were under -- being shot at they were under gunfire. >> the chief tells me the suspect fired at homes i neighborhood. two officers returned gunfire. nt one point, the suspect was believed to have bn the roof of his home. it's unclear how many shots were

fired, a police are still searching for a motive. >> extremely dangerous. i would characterize it as very dangerous, and i'm glad that no residents werein jured. i'm glad that no police officers were injured. >> reporter: just 15 minutes later, police were called tobr dy moor loop for a double shooting. both incidents were in woodbridge several miles apart buthey were not related. police say the victims were in a rcar that had driven o curb into a wooded area. the shooter got away. >> when the officers made contact with the two wo individuals, tmales, we determined they were suffering om apparent gunshot wounds. they were actually pronounced dead here at the scenell. >> reporter: the two officers who opened fire have been placed on administrative leave while this whole incident is . investigat at last check, the suspect remains in the hospital, and police are telling me hhey may e on the scene for the next several hours.

we are working to get new information about why a woman in a motorized wheelchair drove off a metro station platform today. a train ended uitng her. investigators looking at surveillance video here at the friendship heights station. metro officials say it shows the woman leaving the platform and falling on to heacks. stretcher tot in a bring her out as police roped off this entrance. witnesses say the trabr came to ant stop. >> up town and i saw what looked like part of her wheelchair stuck under the metro car. >> the woman is in critical condition. officers reopened the jennifer street entrance to the station after it was closed for a short time. a worker gund down inside a d.c. gas station.
