it was very busy here. but not without exhaustion and frustration. more than 1,500 people were in line wrapped around this school waiting to vote. now, the s problemrted around 4:00 when brandywine elementary ran out of otherpo polling places in princ george's county the new baledts arrround 8:00, shortly before the ballots closed. everyone voted but people were exhausted. one woman took offer high-heel shoes and said forget it. >> been at work since t7:00s morning, get here, thought we were going to get out soon. they run out of ballots. everyone's frustrated. you can talk to t allhese people that's around me. it's been longday. we've been waiting a long time. >> reporter: you rea y have to

admire the people who waited in line. they were understandably tired, somebody donated pizzas to the polls and judge patricia johnson asked me to help pass them out. and some other people. they wer really happy to have something to eat after waiting in line for so long. back out here live, hats off to the volunteers who were actually working at this polling site since early this morning. many of them are relieved and happy that it's over. live here in prince george's county, i'm shomaristone, news4. >> let's go back to virginia now. the 10th congressional district flips from red to blue tonight. >> jennifer wexton is now the congresswoman-elect from northern virginia. here's how the results shake oue this r called very early in the night tonight. >> northern virginia buru chief julie carey is live at headquarters. julie, this was a pretty significant race. >> repter: very important. it was going to be one of the first signs of whether there would be a blue wave. democrats had a chance to

celebrate early here tonight. by 7:45, they had learned that nnifer wexton had made good on her promise to, quote, repeal and replace barbara comstock, flipping this seat from red to blue for the first time in four decades. the crowd erupting into cheers when wexton and other elected leaders tk the stage. the stay senator and former prosecutor now headed to congress. wexton's camign was fueled by dozens of grass roots groups like moms demand action and indivisible. she had an arm oy out there knocking on doors. >> i've been saying since the beginning of thiha campaign change is coming. americans deserve a nation where our children are safe, sick people get the health care they need, immignts are welcome, schools are successful and it's no longer easier to buy a gun than it is to vote.

>> reporter: jennifer wextoner lives in loudoun county and her home county delivered big for her turnout in loudoun and fairfax county sw y swamped the. >> news4's david culver reports tonight from the comstock campaign. >> reporter: within minutes of barbara comstock's concession speech, the balloons and banne d camen here in ashburn as republicans gathered and came to the realizationhe that for first time in nearly 40 years virginia's 10th district would be represented in congress by a democrat. comstock stepped out around 8:45 in the eveni surrounded by supporters o manyf whom had been with her for her wins in 2014 and 2016. > these great victories will continue. look at our supreme court.

>> and he was replaced by candidate trone and had a big win. >> leon? >> reporter: things really beginning to come into focus now. i want to show you where things stand at the moment now. this a cha based uponnbc's projected winners. the key word here is projected. far nbc news is projecting democrats will take 229 seats and that republicans will come back with 206 tonight. now, we told you at the ginning of theight democrats needed to pick up 23 seats if they were to retake control of the house. it april peers they have met at mark, but yet there were still lots of races to be decided,specially outwest, as polls are just closing out there. but once again, democrats are ojected to take control. and that's significant because thtt're going to have com control now and could start reigniting some of the vestigations intohe president which have been put on ice undn republi control. now, let's turn to the senate.

as predicted, now the republicans will maintain control there. ted cruz won in texas, apparently guaranteeing republicans to at least get the 50 seats they need. right now there are still a number of seats on the side and this is a representation of what e believe is going to happen, republicans projected at 52. these are people who will beit caucusing the democrats. we'll have a look at the big high profile races and getting a clearer picture coming up in just a few minutes. >> thankyou. in maryland, governor larry hogan will stay in annapolis. voters easily reelected him tonit over democratic challenger ben jealous. >> and now hogan is the first governor re-elected in 64 years. >> hogan fans have had a lot to cheer about nit. tracee? >> reporter: they have in fact.

he did concede. hogan, d governor larry congratulating him on the win tonight. some of his voters and volunteers were not happy about that. they began chanting "count the vote, count the vote, count the vote" because so many people had problems votinght ton but jealous said it was the right thing to do, to go ahead and concede the election he did say how proud he was of this campaign. he knew he was the underdog. he called himself an insdgent e mounted a progressive campaign with a progressive and gressive agenda, pushing for big teacher pay increases, transportation and health care. agn he said he was proud. let's hear a little bit more what he had to say just minutes ago. >> it's easy to figure out what we can disagree on. what is tougher and more important in a democracys to figure out what we can agree on and to go again thatdone. >> reporter: the very last thing he said in his concession speech, he said if you don't see
