>> democrats have control of the house but republicans were able to hold onto the senate. here is the breakdown of the numbers. in the house, 206 seats have gone to republicans. theer democratse able to flip 23 hhase seats tonge the balance of power. the democrats now have 229 seats and that puts congresswoman nancy pelosi back in control as house speaker. >> w republicansl retain control of the senate. texas senator ted cruz manag to hold on to his seat. missouri's claire mccaskill lost to josh hawley. they came out on top in indiana, north dakota. >> democrats were able to take control of the house with victories. democrat jenniferexton defeated incumbent governor barbara comstock. this is the first time in years a democrat has ten theseat. news 4's chris lawrence joins us live froin mcc with details. this is a big win, chris. >> reporter: yeah, a whole lot

for calling the race too soon. the team looked at the numrs and the rightful winner was hogan. david trone claimed victory. two years ago trone lost his bis for t district. thi morning we' also tracking results of several races in other states that garnnaed nat attention. in florida tallahassee mayor andrewhe gillum lost race for governor to trump supporter ron desantis. gillum would have been the first african-american governor of that state. the results were close with desantis earning a little over 73,000 votes more than gillum. he received strong support from president trump who held multiple rallies over the course of the state. most people went to bed without an answer. angie goff has thela st. anymore results?

on homeowners and renters insurance. 5:15no right running as a democrat in trump it'sry is a challenge, but one that west virginia senator joe manchin rose to last night. senator manchin was able to maintain his seat in what was expected to be a competitive race. it did not turn out thaty. wa he handily besd patrick morsi. six weeks ago senator manchin made a pivotal vote, one that may have very well kept him in the race. he was the only docrat to vote in favor of confirming supreme court justice brett kavanaugh. manchin said the win was a message for president trump. >>hat west virginia said loud and clear tonight, mr. president, we want our senator, not your senator.

bk now at 5:45 with the latest on a few of last night's big races. the florida senate race remains too close to call. at this point the race is within the range of the mandatory recount since outgovngnor rick scott and bill nelson are within half a percentage point of each other. >> democrat tim kaine will keep his seat. he handily beat cory stewart. during his speech he says he t hopess blue wave humbles president trump. mitt romney won the senate race in utah. the 2012 gop nominee and former massachusetts goverr defeated the incumbent. romney could shake things up ab he has been an outstiken c of president trump and that could become a powerful bit of opposition to the white house in the senate. while republicans are keeping the senate, changes are coming

>> tracie, let's talk about the senate a bit. what were the key rac that helped republicans hold on to power there? >> so there was the texas race. ted cruz w able to pull out a win over beto o'rourke who had a lot of momentum goingin. even though he was down in the polls, there were questions about whether there w people he had driven to the polls that weren't really being counted, but in ie end wasn't enough. claire mccaskill of missouri is notoming back to washington. josh hawley, the republican, beat her out. so h ts now goingbe coming to washington.s republican picking off democrats in indian missouri, also in south dakota and in tennessee. so republicans withheld or held their ground in the which is what's going to make things so interesting overhe next two years with democrats in charge on one side and republicans on the other. >> o tracie pott the hill. thank you. the democrat win in the m house meae for a local

makeup of who represents that district was going to happen this time if not in 2020 so not a terrible surprise. i will say that the size of the in, that was really notable to men my mind is a real repudiation of president trump, at least in that district. >> i wonetr if that's sng you would look at and sort of apply to all of northern lrginia. if yk at the senate race, tim kaine beatar corey sby 20 points. how much of the changing in the demographics in that area were part of that factor? >> you know, virgini in 2018 is very different than it was 40 years ago last time a held that seat. in fact, 40 years ago a democrat that held that seat would probably be a republican. so virginia, it's -- particularly northern virginia, it'syp a educated area.
