victories such as the one weaw in virginia's tenth district. demofeat jen wexton defeated republican barbara comsto comstock. this is the first time in years a democrat has taken the seat. news hr4's lawrence joins us from mcclain with the details. chris? >> reporter: well, you know,t was 1981, so the last time a democrat held this seat. gas w $1.25. rick jamesel rsed "super freak" and we were watching george and weezie on "t jeffersons." president trump said this is a referendum on me. pretend i was on t ballot. boy, jennifer wexton exploited that. e missed no opportunity to tie barbara comstock to ath preside remains relatively unpopular in this point of northern virginia. comstock argued s'd buck the president on several important ike when he called for a pay freeze on federal workers.

years that a democrat has taken is seat. news 4's chris lawrence has more on what helped propel jennifer wexton. >> reporter: she went back to her core, health care, she made no secret even though on the other sideas barbara comstock. she kept tying president trump to this race. the president has said this race was a referendum on him, he was on the ballot. wexton wasted no time trying to exploitt t opportunity pointing out that comstock voted with her opponent more than paul ryan. she pushed back and talked about the time she bucked president trump when he proposed a pay freeze for federal workers, how she fought to try to get a pay raise. in the end that blue wavehon the e too much. jennifer wexton cruised by 40 to

a big win for texas senator ted ouz helps strengthen the republican's hol the senate. >> democrats now have control on the house thanks toome big upsets including newcomer abigail spanberger beating two term republican dave brat in virginia. nbc's kristen welker is livets e of the white house with reaction. kristen, good morning. >> reporter: hi, aaron and eun. president trump is casting this as aindication of himself and his policies even as americans are waking up to a new in washington as you just pointed out, that of a divided t govern democrats took back control of the house in elections tuesday for the first time i eight years. that momentum fueled by a rebuke of president trump in cities and suburbs, but those democratic gains did not extend to the linate where repns padded their advantage. that's what we were expecting with the house nown democratic hands though, they are poised to flex their muscles. what does that mean?

a centage point which means recount is mandatory in florida. >> the race for governor inge gia is also too close to call. right now republican brian kemp leads m bye than 68,000 votes over democrat stacey utabrams, there are still a lot of votes that need to be counted. nbc news has learned that there are reports of thousands of uncoted absentee ballots in addition to an unknownf number o provisional ballots. once those are counted kemp may drop below 50% whichould trigger a runoff. >> with several races up in the the realn't know result of the so-called blue wave. >> joining us to talk about the shift in is dr. michael fontroy, political sciences professor from brown university. thank you for your insight. it is predicted the democrats would regain contr of the use and that republicans would maintain control of the senate. they did gn somepace there. there has been a mixed bag in terms of the governor's races.

andrew gillum lost to a mepublican. what does this ? is this really a victory for the democrats and their repudiatisi of pnt trump? >> well, yes and no. both sides claim some victory here. is is really a stalemate election in many regards when you add up all of the races and all of the levels around the country. so we're lurching into ati rely new space with divided government. the president's going to have to adjust to that.ad he a free run for the last two years with republicans in control and so now he's goi to have to deal with some investigations. the b sort of backdrop in which all of this isth occurrin we haven't discussed yet is the mueller investigation. that's been silent for the last two months. now that the election is ov , we're about to find out now if that's another shoe to drop that could impact whaons going >> virginia's tenth congressional distrife, jen wexton is the first democrat to represent that district in 40

what does that tell you about the race and how wexton was able to win? >> it tells me more about the change in northern virginia and the state generally than it does anything else. jennerexton by all accounts appears to be a better fit in terms of ideology, belief systems and all of that. you can seeom se of that in the results. i mean, she won by a ton ofs. vo you know, it would be one thing if this were a two or three-point race, tubs was digit. that's a repudiation of trump style politics as well as barbara comstock. >> i don't know if we have time for one more question. okay. so -- o for it. >> okay. president trump likes to think he was a factor in the maryland governor's race where larry hogan was a republican re-elected in that state which is heavily blue. what does that say about how politicians have to move forward in this divided nation? >> if you'reen a b state and you're a republican, your best bet is to stay away president trump as much as possible. conversely, if you're a democrat
