i know you lost a sergeant and friend this morning. our hearts are with you, sir. >> good morning. thank you very much. >> let's start with the investigation. as we understand it from our sources, this suspect was n carrying an i.d. is that the case? and how doou go about trying to identify this person? any have yet to locate identification that he had on him or around him. our partners from the fbi came up and we did a fingerprint scan and we continue to check to see if that's, if he is located in some datioase. in additn, we will look to see, he might have some tattoos that might help usn identifying who he is. >> we hear and we understand that the man is dead. pete was reporting that he likely killed himself. do you know how he died, the? gunm >> at this point it's too early er know how he died. the offic that made entry

said that he was deceased when they got into the building. >> sheriff, y lost a sergeant who had worked in your department for 29 years. we are showing his picture, ron helus. by all accounts, he died a hero and rards gunfire, arriving on the scene. can you tell us more about what happened here and tell us about this man? >> well, our sheriff's office received multiple 911 ca bs for shotsng fired at the borderline bar and grill. you'ri you' our units were on scene in minutes. the sergeant and our patrol officers decided they had to go in right away. as they began to make entry, sergeant helus was shot multiple ketimes. they b out briefly until additional units could get he and those additional officers made entry and that's when the

suspect was found deceased. and the 11 additional victims were found inside. >> i can only imagine, sheriff, that tre are so many parents right now still wondering about their own children because it was college night. a lot o kids were out there. there are people reaching out on facebook and through social media trying to find out about their children. how are you helping those parents? >> we have a victims hotline. they can go to our website at vcsp.org andet thatictims hotline and call. our people put that together. itill be hours as the medical examiner is going through and working to identify who those victims are and making notifications to the families. >> sheriff, you mentioned that up unt this point your officers had found just a single weapon here. a handgun. i know you went into that scene. you saw thatruesome scene. does it strike you as unusual

that a handgun couldmureak that damage that quickly? >> no, r notlly. i mean, a hand -- assault rifles get all t tention, but certainly a handgun in the hand of the right person can certainly wreak a lot of damage, especially at close range. >> you have been,f, shern law enforcement for decades, and you have seen countless scenes. i can only imagine. pare to whais c you have seen in the past? >> this is by far the most horrific thing that i have seen in my 41 years. >> sir, we can't say enough about this, whe sergean lost his life a few hours ago. what would you want us to know and what should people know? i know h was your friend, too. what should we know about this courageous man? >> well, just that. that he was willing to sacrifice

like, what you thought his demeanor was like. >> he had like a quick disguise. he had like a black outfit on. he had some glasses, like a black shirt or jacket. but, yeah. he looke like he was over ., i would s but, like, from a quick glance of what i saw with the time of what happened, i got that much of a visual on him. i also saw the handgun. >> what did you do, holden? you see the gunman. you hear the shots. were you able to did you hide? what happened? >> so right when i saw everhing happen, i mean right when i saw the actual, like, flash from the gun, i immediately was in shock, like wide open, my mouth, and i dropped down to the flooro get cover mangd sure i was safe. then i started crawling on the

to the st to get access side door where i was at. once i was able to get up, started running. and then i started hearing more i didn't nknow if they were behind me. i started running as fast as i uld. then i finally got access to my car. i actually started hyperventilating. i was freaking out. my hands were curling in. i was breathing heavy. i didn't know what to do. and then once i started driving i -- there was like a gas station close to where i'm at. and then i saw people in the street. i was like, yo, get in m car. like no one should be just walking on the road right now. then a girl that got into my car arm and i ended up driving her to the hospital. then i dropped them off there. then i immediately went home to my family andot into a safe environment. >> holden, were you there with friends, and have you heard from

them? >> yes. so i was with friends. i mean, i am a local. i have been come hearing for, like, six months nowan say. i met a lot of people coming here. one thing i do like about coming here is that i always run into people ie haven't seen sike high school. you know, evening elementary school for crying out loud. it's cool playing catch-up with all my friends herea but, i didn't know some people. fortunately, the first two gunshots that i saw, i knew the girl that was running, like at the cashr. regis we weren't like good friends, someone that i just met from going to borderline. we just always hadmall talk like, hey, how is everything? catching up, basically. she was the first one to get shot tonight. >> wow. >> yeah. i'm happy to be on my two feet. >> we are happy to see y and

8:16. the nation's biggest airlines are under an faa emergency order this morning to ensure their pilots know how to recover from a sudden nosedive. >> all of them fly the 737 max. that's same plane that crashed last week in indonesia killing all 189 people on board. nbc's tom costello covers aviation f us. we understand the pilots may have been fating the computers to keep that in the air? >> that's right. so the plane's computers were trying to adjust the trim and pushing the nose down. the pilots were trying to pull the nose up. now these three u.s. airlines here in the u.s. are under an emergency faa order. they are complying with it as is investigatorsss whether it was a software or hardware problem with the planend could the pilots have done anything to save the lives of everybody on board. > reporter: one week after lnie
