sheriff's investigators in fauquier count i areo working solve a double murder mystery. a man and his young dult son were found shot to death in morning.e on friday bureau chief julie carey is learning more about the victims and investigation. >> reporter: friends tell me the man found dead here along with his son is an immigrant success story. he was so proud to be in this country he named his children america and virginia. now those friends are struggling to figure out whyomeone would kill him and his son. the bodies off 61-year-old man and his son america were found friday morning after a family member traveling abroad asked the sherifs office to check on their welfare. >> the autopsy indicated that both had suffered gunshot wound. >> reporter: two women, his wife and daughter, also live here, but they were away visiting a sick relative in vietnam. son america was last heard from wednesday evening when he communicated with someone by

let's get bk to the big story of the day, those wildfires intensifying in california this hour. >> yeah. 31, andth toll is now at the number of building damaged is rising rapidly as well. > hundreds of people are still missing. nbc's miguel almaguer is live in california. s >> reporter: t the scene so many are coming home to in both northern and southern california today. block after block incinerated. the death toll is now the highest the state has ever seen

in northercalifornia, and they have also seen the deadliest most destructive w dfire in that part of the state. here in southern california what they are worried about today is the santa ana winds gusting at upwards of 60 miles it's going to fan flames all across this area. tonight on "nightly news" we' take you to the front lines where more than 8,000 firefighters are working around the clock to save homes and lives. >> miguel almaguer reporting. those wntdfires roaring neighborhoods and into the record books as well. record a ana winds and dry conditions are fueling these fires. storm team 4's amelia draper here to explain what's going on with this mix. >> just aeabreaking situation continuing out of california. what we're tracking, take a look here. thajor wildfires. you can see them on the screen with the red dots. one up in nthern california and two down by los angeles and malibu in southern k.so, first i'm taking you to the one that's about 150 miles north of san

francisco. this is the destructive camp fire. it's already burned over 100,000 acres of land, and this fire is only 25% contained. it's destroyed thousands o structures. we then head down to the hill re. this firankfully is 80% omntained and likely to be under complete controlime this week, likely by thursday, but then we have the woolsey fire. this has burned almost 100,000 acres of land as well. this fire is only about 20% contained, and it's burned 370 structures in total. what's causing these wildfires and why are they so out of control, at least both of them, the woolseynd the cam fire? this is the drought monitor, and can you see we have a huge drough issue going on in the southeastern part of the country. now, all ofor californially dry to some degree with drought conditions in the most northern parts of the state and then the southern part of the state as well. or addition to that, little rain
