>> i want the dream. >> joining us now, ben, patricia, ben easternio, paul, good morning. this is such a dark, dark series. i almost felat colding that prison which you actually got access to? >> yes. the governor, governor cuomo, elped us have access to the prison, which is really important because that environment up there at northern new york state is close to the canadian border. they call it little sigh gea yeah. >> it's very bleak. >> yeah. >> you get the feel. ben, you're not an actor in this, you arehe director of this and people think, oh, is it a dark comedy? no, it's just dark and it's a thriller? >> yeah, it's a fascinating story, the fact that these two inmates seduced this civilian worker at the prison and got her to help them cut their way out

of their cells. it was fascinating me. i think there is some humor, but it's kind of like a realistic tone. >> it is absolutel i am already into the series. patricia, i had to check the credits. you are so totally transformed into joyce tilley mitchell. what was that like? how did you get into her? >> well, i wked with a dialect coach, lee dylan, and hadhese dent appliances made by art kamoto who gavee kind of an underbite and these giant contac lenses. i gained a bunch of weight. transformation. you had never met with the real tilley i mitchell. sh in jail right now, right? >> i didn't feel the need to. from the research, i knew she was sort ofus litig she said through her lawyers during the escape when the guys were on the run,p hey, s using my picture to the press. stop using may name inn conjunctith these men. i have nothing to do with that.

>> did you come away thinking she was sort o like a little lam who had been led t the slaughter by prison convicts? or was she sure of herself? >> human beings are complicated love, ti, desiepec -dself loneliness, are all complicatin parts oit. we can all fall victim. benecio you play richard matt. paul, youlay david sweat. you were absolutely terrifying. there is like this menacing thing goingn, don't you think? >> yes. >> yes. i know. >> and that's a compliment. but i also think that these guys, you both gave them som humanity. what was it like to get into this story? >> well, for me i think the hard thing is, you know, playing,

being in the moment and making it look easy, that you are really in theat moment. always like a struggle of the actor, trying to be in front of the camera. i think the writers and benet loud -- benet loud for a great atmosphere to get creative andf different angles of maybe things about the human condition that are a little bit darker, like manipulation and how to manipulate, you know, find different ways to manipulate. sometimes with a smile. sometimes with gging, or whatever it is. to mehat was like the interesting thing about exploring the character. just finding subtl ways of showing his, my character'sni lating of especially of ricia aracter that p plays. >> paul, you got to meet the

character you play, david sweat, who is in prison. how did that inform what you did? what did you make of him? >> well, i think it has a little bit to do with what you said about their sse of humanity here. when you hear somebody killed somebody or somebody's in prison, it paints a loud sort of one dimensional portrait. it was shocking to me when w went and talked to david that he was a person,ig? i mean, he is still a human being behind bars in a cage. to see that he had a sense of in lligence, that he maybe could have been an engineer or nmething if he hadn't grp in the system and fallen into trouble at a young age. just making contact with a real person was actually kind of hard and scary and confusing. it was really intense. >> it's a story with a lot of ayers, which i'm sure is what appealed to you, ben, about it. thank bu forng here.
